Cognitive Dissonance & College Major Declaration
No full textOur presentation consists of a literature review based on cognitive dissonance and major college declaration. We examined a total of 30 studies that were deemed relevant to this study. The program\u27s primary focus will be decision-making, cognitive dissonance, and contributing factors of major academic selection. Through these thirty studies, it was found that some of the contributing factors involved in decision-making consisted of SES background, social influence and pressures, gender, first-generation status, one\u27s self-concept, and interpersonal interests. It was also found that in order to reduce cognitive dissonance, individuals liked the option they chose and disliked the option they did not, even if it was what they wanted to do initially. In addition, those who had a valuable set of social support allowed students to have the opportunity to explore various academic majors possibilities; along with proper guidance and revealing information that would be deemed useful when making these critical decisions
The Effects of Eye Pressure and Diabetes on Vision
No full textVision is the primary sense that allow us to connect with the world. The optic nerve contains millions of nerve fibers that send visual messages to the brain which enables vision. The optic nerve is located at the back of each eye and connects directly to the brain. The optic nerve can be damaged due to high eye pressure and the condition is known glaucoma. The high eye pressure or intraocular pressure increases when the flowing fluid inside the eyes, also known as aqueous humor, builds up instead of draining out. The aqueous humor usually drains through the tissue called trabecular meshwork which is located at the angle where iris and cornea of the eyes meet. This presentation will explore how not only can intraocular pressure damage the vision, but diabetes can also lead to blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused when the high blood sugar damages blood vessels in retina of the eyes. These damaged blood vessels can swell and leak, causing lack of blood flow and blurry vision. Therefore, regular eye examination can prevent vision loss by monitoring the intraocular pressure and checking for any swell, or leak of blood in the eyes
Comparison of Soil Organic Carbon Stocks in Two Forest Types in Huron Mountains, Michigan
Get PDFIt is of utmost importance to keep track of the soil organic carbon (SOC) level in forests due to how it affects atmospheric CO2 concentrations and how it mitigates climate change. This study investigates the amount of soil organic carbon that we have gathered from two different forest types such as the Red Pine and Hemlock Sugar Maple Forest. The soil samples used from these two forest types were taken from the Huron Mountain located in Michigan. The Red Pine forest is a plantation forest while the Hemlock Sugar Maple forest is natural. We will be comparing the levels of soil organic carbon found in these two forest types and determine if there is a difference in the amount of carbon. A total of three plots were set up in the red pine forest and the hemlock sugar maple forest which helped us analyze the composition and layout of the forest. Soil samples were collected from two depth layers: 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm. A total of 28 samples were used, 12 of the samples were from the red pine forest while 16 was from the hemlock sugar maple forest. According to our results the overall mean soil organic stock level is higher in the hemlock sugar maple forest(124.8Mg/ha) in comparison to the red pine forest(19.3Mg/ha). This result tells us that the soil organic carbon levels in natural forest types will be much greater than that of plantation forest types
Cross State Border Nicotine Vaping Products Purchase – Early Evidence from State Emergency Sales Restrictions in 2019
No full textOur study investigates whether and to what extent the cross border purchase from states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Washington, with Nicotine Vaping Product (NVP) sales restrictions in response to the EVALI outbreak in 2019 to their neighboring states where NVP flavors or NVPs were allowed to sale. METHODS The 2019 weekly county-level NVP sales by flavors (tobacco, mint/menthol, and other flavors) were compiled using Nielsen Scanner data from the Kilts Marketing Data Center Archive of the Nielsen Company at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The study sample was restricted to weekly NVP sales by flavors from the surrounding states of MA, RI, and WA, ten weeks before and after their NVP sales restrictions implemented in 2019. A quasi-experimental, comparison group pre-post study design was used to study the impacts of NVP sales restrictions on cross-border NVP purchases. RESULTS Weekly NVP sales for border counties significantly increased in response to the MA, RI, and WA bans for tobacco flavored (56%, 45%, 6%, respectively), menthol/mint flavored (51%, 2%, 39%, respectively), and other flavored (79%, 3%, 2%, respectively) products, compared to sales for non-border counties (all p-value
