    Seasonal Dynamics of Soil Respiration and Its Autotrophic and Heterotrophic Components in Subtropical Camphor Forests

    On a global scale, soil respiration (Rs), representing the CO2 flux between the soil surface and the atmosphere, ranks as the second-largest terrestrial carbon (C) flux. Understanding the dynamics between Rs and its autotrophic (Ra) and heterotrophic (Rh) components is necessary for accurately evaluating and predicting global C balance and net ecosystem production under environmental change. In this study, we conducted a two-year root exclusion experiment in subtropical China’s Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl.) forests to assess seasonal changes in Ra and Rh and their relative contributions to Rs. Additionally, we examined the influence of environmental factors on the dynamics of Ra, Rh, and Rs. Our results showed that seasonal mean Rs values were 2.88 µmol m−2 s−1, with mean Ra and Rh of 1.21 and 1.67 µmol m−2 s−1, respectively, in the studied forests. On an annual basis, the annual values of mean Rs in the studied forests were 405 ± 219 g C m−2 year−1, with Rh and Ra accounting for 240 ± 120 and 164 ± 102 g C m−2 year−1, respectively. The seasonal mean ratio of Rh to Rs (Rh/Rs) was 58%, varying from 45 to 81%. Seasonal changes in Rs and Rh were strongly correlated with soil temperature but not soil water content. Both Rh and Rs increased exponentially with the average soil temperature measured in the topsoil layer (about 5 cm), with Q10 values of 2.02 and 1.73 for Rh and Rs, respectively. Our results suggest that the composition and activity of soil microbes and fauna play a primary role in releasing carbon flux from soil to the atmosphere in the studied forest ecosystems.https://opus.govst.edu/fac/1174/thumbnail.jp

    The Role of Innovation and Technology in Renewable Energy

    Renewable energy is an investment in our future. This article explores the role of innovation and technology in electricity production from renewable sources in Europe, the Former Soviet Union, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and North America. It analyzes the major challenges—in terms of technology and population skills needed to use it—that impact each of these regions in moving toward a more environmentally friendly generation and use of energy. We find that specific regional characteristics, together with the number of patent applications and the level of skills enabling work with advanced technologies of a country, have a substantial effect on its renewable electricity output.     Fast Fashion: Cheap But at What Cost?

    Fast fashion is when companies cheaply mass-produce clothing and then sell it for low prices to keep up with trends. These businesses use sweatshops that utilize child labor and unfair wages in unsafe environments. Not only is this bad for the workers in other countries but the mass production of clothing can have many negative impacts on the environment through its high waste, carbon emissions, pollution of water, and lack of sustainability. One of the most well-known and current businesses using this practice is Shein, which is based in China. While they may be getting the most attention currently, there are many more famous companies such as Forever 21, H&M, Urban Outfitters, and Victoria’s Secret. While many people are drawn to these companies for their cheap prices and current fashion, what they don’t know is how much damage these companies cause. Most of the clothing from these companies is used a few times and then thrown away which leads to excessive amounts of clothing in landfills. There needs to be more attention brought to the fast fashion mentality before the environment takes on more damage. There are many other sustainable and eco-friendly options, it would just require a shift in how fashion trends are currently viewed

    Initial study (e.g., Kahneman & Tversky, (1982) has indicated that failed actions (i.e., switches that result in negative outcomes) evoke more regret than inactions (i.e., non-switches resulting in negative outcomes), a vigorous finding in the regret literature. Subsequent work, however, revealed that individuals report more inaction regrets than action regrets (e.g., Gilovich & Medvec, 1994). The current research examines whether regret stemming from actions versus inactions are moderated by one’s attachment style. Attachment can be both crucial when it comes to decision making and one’s ability to mitigate the negative effects following a decision. Participants will be asked to complete an existing attachment style measure and then asked to imagine themselves either switching from their initial decision or sticking to it that produces an undesired outcome. Participants then will rate the intensity of regret they would experience following the negative outcome. Approximately 60 students will participate in this study. Consistent with Kahneman and Tversky’s findings, we expect to find a main effect for decision type. That is, individuals will report experiencing more regret following actions that inactions. However, we also expect to find a significant interaction effect between attachment styles and decision type with regards to experience of regret. We expect that present study will provide explanation to why people experience varying amount of regret stemming from failed actions and inactions. That is, the amount of regret experienced between actions and inactions will change based on one’s attachment style type

    The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and evidence-based clinical education is essential in undergraduate and graduate allied healthcare curriculum and core competencies. Foundational SoTL pedagogical content will be covered and unique pandemic considerations and challenges will be explored within the context of bridging undergraduate and graduate curriculum in allied healthcare programs, such as speech-language pathology programs. Strategies to bridge and monitor undergraduate and graduate curriculum competencies will be explored. More specifically, direct and indirect implications of the current pandemic landscape on learners and educators will be investigated through a SoTL and interprofessional lens

    Body Dimension and Length-Weigh Relationships of Invasive Exotic Earthworm Species in Huron Mountains Forests

    Invasive exotic earthworms have undesired ecological effects on structure, function, and biodiversity of forest ecosystems in the Great Lakes region. Biological parameters including body length, weight, growth rate, and regeneration patterns of earthworms are necessary to understand their life cycle and impacts on ecological processes such as nutrient biogeochemistry cycling and carbon sequestration in the forests, as well as for forest management practices. In this work, earthworms were surveyed in main forest types of the Huron Mountains Preserve of Michigan, Upper Peninsula during the period of May 2021 to October 2022. Earthworms were captured from established sampling quadrates using a mustard solution. Each earthworm species was identified, with its body length and dry weight recorded. Results showed that Dendrobaena octaedra was the dominant earthworm species, followed by Aporrectodea longa and Lumbricus terrestris. L. terrestris had the largest body dimension among the three invasive exotic earthworm types, with a mean length and dry weight of 60.4mm and 0.254g, respectively. D. octaedra had the smallest body size, with an average value of 25.5mm and 0.012g in length and mass. Body dimension of A. longa was between the values of L. terrestris and D. octaedra. The regression equation of body length-dry weight relationship for total earthworms was W = 0.000007L2.258. Specifically, the length-weight relations were W = 0.00001L2.135, W = 0.000001L2.816, and W = 0.000003L2.618 for D. octaedra, A. longa and L. terrestris, respectively. Our study suggests that variations of composition, biological features, and micro-environmental conditions in the selected forest types could be responsible for these differentiations of earthworm body features
