Exploring the Development of Mental Health Training Programs for Black and Brown Female Teens and Preteens in Illinois Nonprofits
The spread of social media has posed severe mental health issues to Black and Brown female teens and pre-teens (BBFTPTs), as they are particularly prone to cyberbullying, racial discrimination, and Eurocentric beauty ideals. This qualitative analysis explored the incorporation of negative effects of social media by Chicago nonprofits on their mental health training programs for BBFTPTs. Employing semi-structured interview methodology on seven nonprofit leaders, the research examined organizational decision-making on curriculum development within the theoretical framework of resource dependency theory, institutional theory, and change management theory. Data analysis revealed funding limitations, pressure from external stakeholders on curricular decisions, and the post-pandemic organizational adjustment to the needs of mental support, all of which impact curricular choices. Some of the major conclusions show that organizations are working on new interventions, including media literacy programs, peer leader models, or culturally responsive interventions that can turn the youth into active creators of online content rather than mere consumers. The research found major changes in the traditional mental health paradigm to identity-based programs, which deal with the multi-faceted interplay between social media exposure, cultural identity, and mental healt

Wearing Many Hats: The Lived Experience of Professional School Counselors
This study examines the lived experiences of urban school counselors. This qualitative phenomenological research attempts to examine roles and responsibilities of each school counselor. The focus is to identify roles assigned to the school counselor, how they are assigned, what sort of say school counselors have in those assignments, and suggestions they have to improve their assigned roles and responsibilities. The findings are analyzed and discussed, including themes of COVID-19, Challenges, Satisfaction, Professional Identity, and Advocacy. Clinical recommendations and future directions have been provided
AI Adoption in IRB Processes: Exploring Views of IRB Professionals
An integral part of the United States’ research enterprise, Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) play a crucial role in upholding the rights and welfare of human participants in research. However, concerns about the effectiveness and efficiency of IRB operations have been raised. Criticisms include inconsistent and time-consuming reviews, opaque decision-making, and erroneous determinations, leading to gaps in research oversight. The emergence of generative AI technology, such as ChatGPT, offers a potential opportunity to improve current IRB processes. Our study aims to explore the attitudes of IRB professionals toward AI tools and their potential integration into IRB processes, as well as to identify the factors influencing these attitudes. Additionally, we seek to investigate the main barriers to incorporating AI tools into IRB processes and how AI tools could be optimally utilized to address concerns raised by researchers
Framing Masculinity: How Film and Television Shape Male Identity and Behavior
Media plays a critical role in shaping perceptions of masculinity, influencing how men view themselves and behave in society. This study explores how film and television reinforce or challenge traditional ideas of masculinity, particularly in relation to aggression, emotional suppression, and authority. Many films depict men as stoic, physically imposing, and resistant to authority, which can shape real-world attitudes and behaviors. Cool Hand Luke (1967) exemplifies this through its rebellious protagonist, whose defiance and endurance make him a symbol of resilience, while the prison guards reflect oppressive masculinity. We witnessed the mirroring of these power dynamics, particularly hypermasculine and dominant behaviors, in the Stanford Prison Experiment (1971). Beyond authority and aggression, media also influences body image and self-worth. The popularity of muscular male leads in action films and superhero franchises has contributed to unrealistic physical expectations, leading some men to pursue extreme fitness regimens or struggle with body dissatisfaction. Meanwhile, romanticized portrayals of men as dominant and emotionally distant reinforce outdated relationship norms, making vulnerability seem like weakness. This research will analyze how classic and contemporary films, from High Plains Drifter (1973) to Barbie (2023), reflect changing notions of masculinity. By comparing traditional archetypes with modern deconstructions, this study explores how media shapes and reflects evolving male identities, shedding light on its broader social impac
The Impact of Centrality of Event on Trauma Outcomes
The centrality of a traumatic event to an individual’s sense of self has been linked to individual trauma outcomes. The current literature review seeks identify the impact of event centrality on individual trauma outcomes. Research suggests that event centrality is related to both post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post traumatic growth (PTG). The Centrality of Events Scale is a metric developed to rate event centrality which has displayed replicated validity in various sample groups. This measure is compared to other ratings including those of PTSS, depression, anxiety, and general psychological wellbeing. Data collected in the current review supports the significance of event centrality in trauma outcomes and does not rule out the moderating or mediating effects of other factors like type of traumatic event, coping ability, and ruminative thought. Trauma type has been cited as an impactful aspect of central trauma outcomes, highlighting sexual trauma as especially correlated with both centrality and PTSD. Adaptive coping ability has been correlated with centrality and PTG, and inversely correlated with PTSS. Ruminative thought is tied to centrality in both PTSS and PTG outcomes. Deliberate rumination has been positively correlated with PTG outcomes, where intrusive rumination has been found to correlate with PTSS. Further investigation of cognitive correlates to trauma outcomes and greater understanding of the impact and mechanisms of centrality has the potential to aid treatment for survivors. Current data suggests cognitive therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy could be effective in treating trauma-related symptomology
Transition to Adulthood: Impacts of Life and Career Skill Building on Adolescents
This literature review examines how preparedness and well-being through effective approaches of building life skills in high school students is significant in improving adulthood experiences, how this impacts mental health, and vulnerable adolescents in adulthood transition. The adjustment from late adolescence into early adulthood often comes with struggles, including indecision, uncertainty, or feelings of overwhelm due to the surplus of pathways or the limited ability or resources to pursue them (Starr et al., 2024). Many adolescents aspire to learn about these different life pathways but may not always have had at home or school support to gain the skills, knowledge, or mindset that will help lead to success (Ginevra et al., 2018). The adolescent years are an important time to gain these skills because during this period of life, adolescents are in a period of complex social and emotional development (Arnett & Jensen, 2019). The academic demands and anticipated transition into young adulthood can be more challenging. The challenge may be greater for some than others including those with preexisting anxiety, depression, or trauma, and those of low socioeconomic status (Salimi et al., 2021). COVID-19 had also reduced the time and effects of classroom learning but also affected the amount of life-skill building and career planning for adolescents (Velasco et al., 2021). Adolescents vary in ability to request assistance with future oriented decisions, others may be unaware of such services offered by their school. This is why the opportunity to prevent adulthood adversity and management difficulty should be addressed and approached
