Revisiting Gender and Marriage: Runaway Wives, Native Law and Custom, and the Native Courts in Colonial Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria
This study focuses on women and colonial courts in Abeokuta, southwestern Nigeria, in the early decades of the twentieth century. It examines the effects of colonial intervention on women and marriage. Examining case volumes of the Ake, Abeokuta, Native Court from 1905 to 1957, the study demonstrates that unique circumstances of the twentieth century—colonial intervention and the establishment of the native courts—led to the increase of divorce rate accelerated by the phenomenon of wives leaving matrimonial homes, establishing new unions of their choice, and approaching the court to end earlier unions and legalize the new ones. The study argues that, despite the negative connotations that might be associated with wives leaving matrimonial homes and requesting divorce in colonial courts, these women made use of the new circumstances to redefine marriage, inserting modifications reflective of women’s choices and preferences, as evidenced through their claims collected from the court records.https://opus.govst.edu/fac/1211/thumbnail.jp
Integrated Physiological and Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Mechanism of Leaf in Phellodendron Chinense Schneid Seedlings Response to Drought Stress
Phellodendron chinense Schneid (P. chinense Schneid) is a traditional Chinese woody medicinal plant which contains berberine, phellodendrine and other bioactive compounds, and has an important function on anti-tumor, anti-inflammation, bacteriostasis, reducing blood sugar and fat. The growth and alkaloid biosynthesis of P. chinense Schneid are affected by drought stress, while influence the yield and quality. However, the molecular mechanism of P. chinense Schneid seedlings response to drought stress at transcriptional and physiological levels are not clear. In this study, physiological and transcriptomic responses of P. chinense Schneid seedling leaf to drought stress were investigated. The P. chinense Schneid seedlings were irrigated to field capacity (NC), 40% field capacity (moderate drought, MD) and 20% field capacity (severe drought, SD). The results showed that MD and SD treatments promoted ROS generation, reduced Chl contents and photosynthetic efficiencies, inhibited shoot growth, but increased phellodendrine contents in leaves compared to the NC treatments. A total of 54325 unigenes were identified in MD and SD treatment samples, and the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were primarily involved in several pathways of photosynthesis, phytohormone biosynthesis and signal transduction and isoquiholine alkaloid biosynthesis, with the ethylene (ET) signaling pathway especially. Moreover, some transcription factors from DEGs were revealed, which chiefly related to ET signal transduction, leaf development and alkaloid biosynthesis. CPA – Performed Election Audits: What They Are, Why They Are Coming, and How To Prepare For Them
My recent nationwide survey of 1,680 potential American voters shows that over two-thirds would have greater confidence in elections, and that over 40% would vote more frequently, if post-election audits were routinely conducted by independent CPAs credentialed for election auditing. Low voter confidence in American elections has triggered professional groups and state legislators to call for post-election audits. But who should conduct these audits? Post-election audits conducted by election administrators raises the issue of information asymmetry. My research explores whether having routine post-election audits conducted by independent Certified Public Accountants further credentialed for election auditing (“CPA Audits”) would affect the voting public’s confidence in elections. My presentation will focus on the various findings of this survey, along with the creation of this new, important area for CPA assurances services, and the need for educational programming
The Evolution of the Chief Technology Officer and the Modernization of Technology in Education
The role of technology in education has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. From the advent of individual workstations to networked labs to one-to-one technologies, computers have transformed how teachers and students consume information. School districts today support hundreds if not thousands of devices and end users. Technology supports mission critical systems like financial, human resources, library, and student information systems and ensures they are integrating rostering information to numerous third-party programs like Clever, Classlink or textbook specific websites. They also support the district operations as well by assisting in or managing building automation controls which can include lighting, heating and cooling along with physical security which includes security cameras and access control systems.
With this rapid change of technology’s usage, the rise in the individuals who support these systems and maintaining them have rapidly grown as well. Gone is the position that began as a part-time teacher who knew a little bit about computers. Now this person is a visionary leader for the school district. A pillar to any administrative team today is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) who is tasked with being a leader, a bridge between technology, operations and instruction, is collaborative and has a wide, diverse skill set.
Today’s CTO is paving the way forward integrating new technologies in the classroom, onsite and virtually, while ensuring that it is done in the safest and most secure ways. CTOs are looked upon as experts in their field who constantly research new opportunities, stay on top of trends and whose department has a hand in working with every employee in a school district.
With the rapid rise of cloud computing and more student data residing in the cloud, CTOs have been susceptible to third-party vendors data breaches or malware attacks. This is in addition to similar attacks that can happen internally with DDoS, ransomware or malware attacks on a school’s internal systems. CTOs must have a balance on understanding the needs of the present, looking at new future trends, and improving from the past

Classification of Online Toxic Comments Using Machine Learning Algorithms
This application classification of online toxic comments using machine learning algorithms project was implemented for the Graduate Capstone Seminar Project for the Master of Science Degree with a Major in Computer Science. In this project, different Machine learning algorithms are used to find toxic comments. In discussions, toxic comments are disrespectful and abusive which makes other people leave the discussion. So, many social networking sites difficult to promote discussions effectively. The main aim of the project is to examine the data of online harassment and classify it into different labels to find toxicity correctly. In this project, we are going to use six machine learning algorithms, apply them to our data and find which algorithm is best by analyzing evaluation metrics for toxic comments classification. We will aim to examine the toxicity with high accuracy to limit its adverse effects and help organizations take the necessary steps

The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact of quarantine on domestic violence rates. In 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2020), approximately 677,000 children were victims of maltreatment. However, the COVID pandemic brought about significant changes, as most states experienced lockdown restrictions including virtual learning. At the height of the pandemic, more than 55 million students were remained home (Education Week, 2021). The children most vulnerable to domestic violence were now in their homes all day, every day, increasing their exposure to violence
