“87% Missing”: Preserving Video Game History in a Canadian Copyright Context
Get PDFIn 2020, the University of Toronto Mississauga campus library acquired the largest collection of video games in Canada from prolific collector Syd Bolton, whose vision was for it to not only be preserved but also playable and publicly accessible. Over the past three years, the collections team has been processing the collection to facilitate access onsite, and in 2024 aims to begin the next step of digitally preserving the collection. In the summer of 2023, the Video Game History Foundation and the Software Preservation Network co-authored a report on the dire state of availability of classic games, with the goal of securing expanded exemptions under US Copyright for libraries doing preservation work with this medium. Using the frame of that historic report, this talk will cover planned workflows and considerations for facilitating access and preservation for a video game collection in the context of the Canadian Copyright Act and how copyright serves as a barrier to game preservation in both Canada and the United States
Supporting International Students\u27 Emotional and Social Wellbeing: Addressing Pressing Issues Related to Tuition and Visa Status Anxiety
Get PDFThe purpose of my research was to engage and build community with international students and to find ways to support them emotionally and socially leading to better mental health outcomes. My research question was: how can I support international college students to alleviate common mental health issues many continue to experience as a result of their international status? This occurs particularly when they must deal with tuition and visa status anxiety. I did three cycles in the research process using online surveys, interviews, and a large debriefing group meeting. Findings indicated that visa status anxiety is one of the most important factors that influence international students’ post-graduation life decisions, lack of financial aid and visa support from USD. Recommendations include offering workshops related to international students’ visa options and post-graduation support, creating more community events to increase students’ sense of belonging, and peer support to relieve loneliness
From Counterspaces to Community:A Qualitative Case Study Analysis of Black Community Making at a PWI
Get PDFThis qualitative case study examined how Black college students build and maintain a sense of community at a predominantly white institution (PWI). Informed by relational sociological methodology and the conceptual framework of Black placemaking, this study foregrounded the nuanced process of community building, focusing on the interplay between Black students and the spaces—physical and digital—they cocreate collectively. This study particularly emphasized the significance of the Black Student Union (BSU) as a foundational Black student organization at PWIs. The following lines of inquiry guided this study: (a) How do Black undergraduate students at a PWI define the Black community? (b) What are the key processes and structures involved in maintaining and sustaining the Black community within a PWI? (c) In what ways does the Black Student Union (BSU) contribute to and facilitate the process of building a sense of community within a PWI? Interviews were conducted with 18 members of the BSU. Additionally, observations were carried out in various Black spaces (e.g., Black resource center [BRC], classrooms, events specifically catered to the Black community). Social media accounts affiliated with the BSU, BRC, and Africana studies department were also analyzed. Findings from the study revealed a Black campus community defined by resilience and active engagement, with Black liberatory spaces serving as its foundation. The study underscored the significant role of the BSU as the cornerstone of the community while highlighting hidden labor costs in its sustainability. The findings from this study provided theoretical and rich qualitative insight into Black students’ experiences
