    Supporting text and data analysis across campus from the academic library

    The ability to comprehend and communicate with text-based data is essential to future success in academics and employment, as evidenced in a recent survey from Bloomberg Research Services which shows that nearly 97% of survey respondents now use data analytics in their companies and 58% consider data and text mining a business analytics tool (https://www.sas.com/content/dam/SAS/bp_de/doc/studie/ba-st-the-current-state-of-business-analytics-2317022.pdf). This has fueled a substantial growth in text analysis research (involving the use of technology to analyze un- and semi-structured text data for valuable insights, trends, and patterns) across disciplines and a corresponding demand on academic libraries to support text analysis pedagogy and text analysis research. In this session, we will introduce text analysis, the methodologies it employs, and various examples of each methodology in research. Then, the Head of Digital Scholarship at a large state university will discuss how her library is beginning to support text analysis across campus including running workshops out of the library, working with faculty to integrate it into class materials, and supporting research on campus. She will discuss the challenges inherent in supporting this new territory, ranging from budgetary concerns to issues of data management, access, and reproducibility

    Featured Speaker: Digital and Physical Safety & Knowledge Work Bravery - Lessons from 33 Years in the Library DEI Space

    What makes us safe in the digital space? Today, academics and academia are on a perilous front line sometimes enabled by digital technologies that simultaneously connect us and create epistemic and emotional safety while leaving us open to a host of unexpected threats. Doxxers target individual faculty, including librarians, and nefarious organizations attack and undermine higher education itself. The dangers of this moment must be seen in a larger context of knowledge that has long been risky for oppressed people and those in solidarity movements. We need not be paralyzed by fear. We can take care of each other and our knowledge workers. We can learn from histories of fugitivity, abolition, and community care in the creation and curation of safe and brave spaces in our libraries for all our academic communities – even those communities that are yet to be built. We can learn from educators who challenged the idea of “at risk youth,” and those who bravely exposed the pervasiveness of white supremacy in our world. Librarians can get ahead of the dangers by applying asset-based strategies that access joy without denying the truth of oppressions

    While examining a jar filled with aquatic plants and animals, Abraham Trembley, a young tutor working for Count William Bentinck in the Netherlands, noticed tiny, green, tube-shaped organisms attached to aquatic plants. Uncertain whether they were plants or animals, he devised a brilliant series of experiments to understand their biology. He observed them contract when disturbed and take steps towards a light, gathering in front of a chevron-shaped opening in a piece of cardboard. Nearly convinced they were animals, he cut one in half expecting to see it die. Instead, it regenerated two perfectly formed bodies from the severed halves. In this 1740 letter, Trembley reports his remarkable discoveries on this animal we now call Hydra to René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, one of the greatest naturalists of his time. To describe novel phenomena where no relevant scientific terminology existed, Trembley elegantly uses analogies and common language while still being precise and systematic. Tentacles become threads, Hydra surveys its environment and regenerates like a plant growing from cuttings. Compared to modern scientific writing, Trembley’s plain language is highly accessible to a non-specialist reader. This letter comes from the beginning of the correspondence between Trembley and Réaumur, and Trembley is concerned that he might be taking up too much of Réaumur’s time. In later letters, we see Trembley come into his own as he and Réaumur communicate as equals. Trembley and Réaumur’s correspondence led them to classify Hydra as an animal with plant-like regenerative properties. The demonstration that an animal can regenerate its entire body from a fragment, later replicated by scientists across Europe, was a challenge to the contemporary theory of emboîtement (encasement), which proposed that regeneration could only occur at specific nodes. It was also seen as a challenge to the belief that animals have a unitary, indivisible soul. Trembley’s detailed studies on Hydra regeneration, which built on his initial experiments described in this letter, were published in Mémoires pour servir à l’histoire d’un genre de polypes d’eau douce (1744). The original text was written in 1740 and is in the public domain. The original French text was previously published in 1943 as part of the collection of Abraham Trembley’s correspondence with Réaumur by Maurice Trembley, Abraham’s great-great grandson (Publisher: Georg & Cie, Librairie de l\u27Université Genève)

    Optimizing Services and Processes: An Industrial and Systems Engineering Approach to Addressing Homelessness

    Being an Industrial and Systems Engineering Student with a foot in volunteer work, I have seen how ISYE can be used to optimize industry and systems that companies have in place, and figured its processes could also be applied to look into the systems being used to solve the homelessness crisis. In this paper, I plan to discuss the data and statistics behind homelessness, the solutions currently in place, how ISYE is currently being used and how it can be applied more efficiently, as well as explore how we as engineering students and as a society can use our education (this blessing of an opportunity) to be a part of the solution

Records include administrative memos, meeting minutes, correspondence, programs, and historical information as well as newspaper clippings related to USD athletics. The records document the advancement of the athletics program, including budget planning, notable events such as the reintroduction of the football program and the move to Division I, and documentation of the recreation program that served the broader campus community. Finding Aids are tools used to aid research by describing the materials in a collection.     The Impact of a Leadership Development Program on Participants’ Practice: A Case Study of the Development Dynamics Course Organized by Caritas India

    Leadership development programs (LDPs) came into existence as a direct result of the realization that leaders are not necessarily born but may need to be educated to become effective leaders. The assumption of LDPs is that leadership competencies can be taught, and evidence has suggested LDPs do, indeed, produce positive changes in aspiring leaders. Such evidence, however, has been generated largely by evaluation studies at the conclusion of most LDPs. Consequently, little to no attention has been given to participants’ actual use of what they have learned in LDPs on the job. The lack of research on the impact of LDPs in actual organizational settings has been clearly evident in existing literature. This study began to fill a gap about the on-the-job impact of LDPs. The focus was on the impact—or possibly the lack of impact—of one LDP, the Development Dynamics Course (DDC) offered every year by Caritas India. Caritas India is a large-scale, faith-based, nonprofit organization operating in all states of India that offers the DDC annually for newly appointed leaders of the Catholic church’s social wing. This study interviewed 12 DDC leaders who participated in the 51st DDC provided by Caritas India in 2021. These participants were located in the north, west, and south portions of India. The study was a two-prong study that investigated how participants conceptualized leadership before and after the DDC leadership training and the learned skills they applied to their leadership practices. The study also compared how male and female participants differed in both prongs of the study, along with how they differed across the three regions. A single-qualitative case study design was employed for the investigation. The findings indicated all but one participant changed their conception of leadership as a direct result of their participation in the DDC leadership training program. All 12 participants applied different skills learned from the DDC program in their leadership practices.     Southcrest Cooperative Energy Feasibility Initiative

    This research project provides an overview and feasibility analysis of a community-based project emerging in the Opportunity Zone of Southcrest, San Diego, California. Virgil Lorenzo (EdD), CEO of GLOBE Education Consultants, proposes a project inspired by the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation, aiming to introduce renewable energy to Southcrest. Lorenzo seeks Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Project Teams to kickstart the initiative, which involves outfitting homes with renewable energy sources like solar panels and micro wind turbines. Eventually, these homes will form a microgrid, potentially selling excess energy back to the main grid during peak usage. The project adopts a community-first approach, engaging Cristo Rey High School students and their families, while Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering students provide mentoring. To enhance sustainability and community involvement, we advocate restructuring the project to prioritize community input in decision-making processes
