    Artificial Intelligence and Energy Democracy

    No full text
Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly transforming many professional activities, and the electric grid has already started to see adverse impacts from its use, such as the burgeoning demand for electricity from data centers. This Article acknowledges these impacts, but also demonstrates that AI can be put to beneficial use on the grid. It proposes and describes a specific use of AI: assisting citizen intervenors in public utility commission (PUC) proceedings, who currently face barriers to participation due to the technical complexity and confidentiality imposed by monopoly utilities. The Article describes how AI can assist intervenors to overcome the barriers to participation and allow for more public input. This in turn would democratize the regulatory process, empowering citizens to engage more effectively by providing them with analytical tools to level the playing field with utilities. The Article emphasizes that empowering citizen participation in this fashion will support achieving energy justice, and lead to fairer outcomes in grid-related regulatory decisions

Women peacebuilders at risk: Analysis of threats received in 2024

    No full text
This policy brief is drawn from the 2025 annual Women Waging Peace report, which serves as a guide for policymakers and funders and draws directly from the recommendations and priorities of women peacebuilders around the world. These findings have been provided by peacebuilders across countries, conflict contexts, types of peacebuilding work, and across age, sexual orientation, education level, disability and migration status. This report leveraged the perspectives and experiences of 106 women peacebuilders from 43 countries to identify peacebuilding priorities for 2025, reflect on the challenges and achievements of 2024, and provide the following recommendations for how international partners can better support women peacebuilders engaged in preventing and mitigating election violence.https://digital.sandiego.edu/ipj-research/1113/thumbnail.jp

Défendre la démocratie : le leadership des femmes dans la prévention et l’atténuation de la violence électorale (Sommaire)

    No full text

Simulating Sustainability: How Resorts Can Balance Freshness and Waste in Produce Supply Chains

    No full text
Resorts face increasing pressure to reduce food waste while maintaining high levels of service quality and produce freshness. This study examines how discrete-event simulation can be used as a decision tool to analyze and improve produce supply chains in the hospitality industry. A simulation model was developed in Simio to compare local and global produce sourcing strategies under identical demand, storage capacity, and spoilage conditions. The model captures key system characteristics, including batch-based deliveries, cold storage constraints, perishability, and probabilistic guest waste. Results indicate that while both sourcing strategies exhibit efficient flow and minimal congestion, global sourcing generates significantly higher levels of spoilage due to larger order sizes and limited storage capacity. In contrast, locally sourced produce resulted in no spoilage, with waste occurring only at the guest consumption stage. These findings suggest that order quantity, rather than system throughput, is a primary driver of produce waste in resort operations. The study demonstrates the value of simulation modeling in revealing hidden inefficiencies and supports the use of data-driven approaches to enhance sustainability, reduce costs, and inform sourcing decisions in resort produce supply chains

Shared Kitchens Changing the Housing Development

In response to the escalating housing crisis and ongoing economic disruptions, many individuals have turned to home-based food entrepreneurship as a means of financial stability. The Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) program enables residents to legally operate small-scale food businesses from their private kitchens, effectively blurring the line between domestic and commercial space. This research investigates how MEHKOs challenge conventional understandings of housing, domesticity, and zoning, and considers how shared or adaptable kitchen models might inform emerging housing typologies. The study combines spatial and policy analysis by mapping the distribution of approved MEHKO sites in San Diego and overlaying that data with U.S. Census population and density information to better understand the communities being served. It examines the zoning regulations that allow for commercial activity within residential zones, while highlighting the regulatory tensions and limitations these home-based businesses face. Preliminary findings reveal that MEHKOs operate legally within residential zones while maintaining compliance with residential codes, suggesting a hybrid use model that destabilizes traditional urban classifications. This raises broader questions about how architecture and policy might evolve to accommodate more flexible live-work housing arrangements. The research also speculates on the implications for housing design and planning, particularly regarding the rise of accessory dwelling units (ADUs), lot-splitting policies, and the potential development of new zoning categories that legitimize these hybrid domestic economies and their architectural conditions
