Comparative Study of Robotic and Manual Welding in A Low Volume-High Mix Manufacturing Environment: Case Study of Cross Head
A comparative study of robotic and manual welding in a low volume high mix manufacturing environment focusing on a truck body part named the Cross head to see if there is a benefit of incorporating robotic welding into the production line. By utilizing predetermined time studies such as Methods Time Measurement 1(MTM-1) and Maynard’s Operation Sequence Technique (MOST) in conjunction with actual welding time and motion study to see which method of time study can be used to extrapolate the times of production for higher number of parts. MTM-1 and MOST were used for a detailed time and motion analysis which were then used to evaluate the efficiency and cost implications and feasibility of incorporating a co-bot welder to execute the tasks of an experienced human welder. Necessity to do the cost analysis and comparison of the co-bot is understanding of the additional cost related to robotic welding such as the fixture costs which include the design cost and fabrication cost, the programming costs, and the common welding costs. The MTM-1, MOST and actual welding time study was performed, and it was found that MTM-1 is closer to actual in the case of Manual welding, and MOST is closer to the actual time in case of Robotic welding. With the average welding process times used for the cost analysis, the robotic welding breaks even in less than 5 days with the daily working hours being 6. If the robotic welding process is optimized by 5%, the break-even will be in less than 2 days, and if it is optimized by 10%, the break-even will be less than a day
Navigating New Frontiers: Unveiling Student Insights on the Integration of AI-Language Models in Writing Instruction
This study delves into the underexplored area of students\u27 personal experiences with AI language models in academic writing. Despite the growing integration of AI tools in education, the focus has often been on the broader impacts, leaving the individual student perspective largely unexamined. Through qualitative research, this investigation captures the insights of writing students on utilizing AI for their assignments. The findings highlight several benefits, including content simplification, idea generation, structural guidance, and overall writing enhancement. However, it also uncovers significant concerns related to authenticity, originality, ethical considerations, and the potential for overreliance on AI. These concerns underscore the necessity for educators and students to adopt efficient practices that address these issues. The study advocates for further collaboration between educators, students, and policymakers to incorporate student feedback into guidelines that foster an educational ecosystem supportive of authentic AI interaction while mitigating its risks. This, in turn, aims to ensure that AI tools enrich the learning experience in harmony with core educational values

Towards a Vision for Learning Analytics in Open-Ended, Student-Centered Engineering Program

Seasonal phenology and starch allocation patterns of Cuban bulrush (Oxycaryum cubense) growing in Mississippi, USA
Seasonal patterns of biomass and starch allocation for the aquatic invasive species (AIS) Cuban bulrush were quantified in populations from Lake Columbus on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in Mississippi. Monthly samples of Cuban bulrush were harvested from five plots from May 2019 to April 2021. During each sampling event, water pH, water temperature, air temperature, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were recorded. Average peak total biomass was 309.0 g DW m−2, 290.0 g DW m−2, and 129.3 g DW m−2 in 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively and usually occurred in late fall or early winter months (November to January). Biomass allocation was greatest for submersed tissues and least for inflorescences. Total, emergent, and submersed biomass had weak negative correlations with water temperature and PAR. Peak total starch content occurred from August to December and was measured at 3.7% DW, 3.2% DW, and 1.3% DW for 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively. Overall, starch was not disproportionately stored in any one tissue, \u3c 1.5% DW for all plant tissues. Since peak biomass occurred during the coldest months of the study, it suggests the capability of this species to expand northward. Future work should include wider spatial or geographic variation in sampling strategy and incorporate growing degree days (GDD) analysis to enhance the understanding of the relationships between life stages and environmental factors
