Challenges and Effects: A Qualitative Analysis of the Unique Challenges Faced by Black Male Care Givers in Long-term Care

    No full text
The existing literature on caregivers working in long-term care focuses on the challenges ranging from being overworked, mental stress, low wages, and abuse. However, little is known about the unique intersectional experiences of Black male caregivers, particularly regarding how race and gender shape their professional encounters, societal perceptions, and coping strategies. The present study analyzed unique stressors of Black male care givers in long term care using their personal experiences and how these stressors impact their mental health. The effects of societal expectations, client biases, and workplace stereotypes significantly affect Black male caregivers are also examined against the background that many acknowledge the impact on their mental health but often refuse support or admit challenges. The project intends to enhance diversity and inclusiveness in caregiving research by prioritizing individuals\u27 experiences, providing valuable insights that go beyond the demographic being examined. The results emphasize the significance of acknowledging and tackling the complex difficulties experienced by black male caregivers. It calls for enhanced support systems and mental health programs in long-term care settings

No More Pinkwashing at the Pink Pony Club: A Feminist Media Analysis of the Potential Shift in Queer Popular Culture to Decenter Homonationalism and Pinkwashing

    No full text
Previous research on queer popular culture highlights the influence popular culture has had on the United States’ legal and political protections for queer people—specifically cisgender gay men and cisgender lesbians with the legalization of same-sex marriage and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” However, some scholars and queer activists critique the homonationalist and pinkwashing agendas deployed by LGBTQ popular culture activists. This research examines whether or not there has been a shift in dominant queer popular culture that decenters homonationalism and pinkwashing. Using a feminist media analysis, this research examines contemporary queer musicians’ activism against the United States’ involvement with the genocide in Palestine. This research draws from discourses and previous research on homonationalism, pinkwashing, and queer popular culture to explore the potential shift in dominant queer popular culture that decenters pinkwashing and homonationalist politics. This research has considered online published interviews and articles about the activism from contemporary queer musicians—Chappell Roan, Reneé Rapp, and MUNA. I examine four main themes that emerged within the research to provide insight into the potential shift in queer popular culture. Further, this research engages in a queer of color critique to examine the role of whiteness in this activism and gain insight into the emerging power dynamics in this recent shift in popular culture and the queer American imagination

The Role of Thyroid Hormone Transporters Mct8 and Oatp1c1 in Cochlear Myelination and Ossicle Bone Development

    No full text
Thyroid hormones (TH) are essential for the development of multiple organ systems, including the auditory system. Adequate TH levels are required before the onset of auditory function to ensure optimal development, and disruptions in TH signaling can lead to irreversible auditory deficits. The Allan-Herndon-Dudley Syndrome (AHDS) is an X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the SLC16A2 gene encoding the monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8). Previous work in our lab showed that mice phenocopying AHDS, generated by knocking out both the Mct8 and Oatp1c1 transporters, display abnormal hearing. Here, we studied the individual and combined roles of Mct8 and Oatp1c1 in auditory development and determine how their deficiency affects cochlear myelination and ossicle bone development. RT-qPCR results demonstrated a significant increase in the mRNA expression of myelin basic protein (MBP) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) in dKO mice compared to wild-type controls at postnatal day 14 (P14). However, no significant differences were observed in MBP or MOG expression at P60. MPZ expression was not significantly different at any age. Furthermore, cell count of the transition zone for both Oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells did not present any significant differences between the groups at either timepoint. These results suggest an upregulation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells in the transition zone of the cochlear nerve while there is a downregulation of mature oligodendrocytes. Ossicle measurements revealed an enlargement of the bones at P60. Together these results suggest that the auditory abnormalities previously found in dKO mice may be caused by a combination of myelin and ossicle abnormalities

Intercultural Communication: Globalization and Social Justice

    No full text
Intercultural Communication: Globalization and Social Justice introduces students to the study of communication among cultures within the broader context of globalization. Kathryn Sorrells and new co-author Sachi Sekimoto highlight history, power, and global institutions as central to understanding the relationships and contexts that shape intercultural communication. Based on a framework that promotes critical thinking, reflection, and action, this text takes a social justice approach that equips students with the skills and knowledge to create a more equitable world through communication. The new Fourth Edition includes additional case studies and expanded discussions of the backlash to globalization, the rise of ethnonationalism, decline of democracy, new media and new technologies, and implications for intercultural communication.https://cornerstone.lib.mnsu.edu/university-archives-msu-authors/1508/thumbnail.jp
