    Two exhibits featuring a variety of media are on display through March 31 in Ouachita Baptist University’s Adams Gallery of Moses-Provine Hall. The exhibits feature work by guest artists Dean Dablow and Anne Greenwood and are hosted by the Rosemary Gossett Adams Department of Art & Design. The exhibits are free and open to the public. Mixed media pieces included in “Anne Greenwood: Nature is a Haunted House” can be found in Gallery 1, on the first floor of Moses-Provine. “Dean Dablow: Everything is Abstract,” a collection of sculpture, photography and paintings, is located in Gallery 2 on the second floor

    Ouachita\u27s Fall 2023 enrollment highest in 57 years

    Ouachita Baptist University has reported its highest enrollment in 57 years, with a Fall 2023 headcount of 1,815. Since 2016, the university has sustained momentum that’s reflected in a 20% increase in total enrollment and a 14% growth in undergraduate enrollment. Residential undergraduate enrollment now numbers 1,581. There are 81 students enrolled in Ouachita’s six graduate programs this fall, more than doubling the number who enrolled when graduate programs were reintroduced in 2020 through the university’s expanding catalog

    An Adapted Optical Density-Based Microplate Assay for Characterizing Actinobacteriophage Infection

    Bacteriophages are a key part of natural environments, and they have a powerful ability to shape bacterial populations. To understand how individual phages interact with slow-growing bacterial hosts such as actinomycetes, an easy and reliable method for quantifying long-term bacterial growth in the presence of phages is needed. Spectrophotometric microplate readers allow for high-throughput repeated measurements, but incubating a small volume for an extended time can present technical challenges. This procedure adapts a standard 96-well microplate to allow for the co-culturing of phages and bacteria without sub-sampling for 96 h, with the bacterial growth recorded every 8 h using spectrophotometric absorbance values. These optical density values are analyzed using R to yield infection metrics, including the percent growth inhibition, relative virulence, and the Stacy-Ceballos index. The methods outlined here provide an effective way to conduct and analyze extended-duration microplate growth curve experiments and includes modifications to reduce evaporation and lid condensation. These protocols facilitate microplate-based assays of interactions between slow-growing bacterial hosts and their bacteriophages

    Candidate Genes Under Selection in Song Sparrows Co-Vary with Climate and Body Mass in Support of Bergmann\u27s Rule

    Ecogeographic rules denote spatial patterns in phenotype and environment that may reflect local adaptation as well as a species’ capacity to adapt to change. To identify genes underlying Bergmann’s Rule, which posits that spatial correlations of body mass and temperature reflect natural selection and local adaptation in endotherms, we compare 79 genomes from nine song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) subspecies that vary ~300% in body mass (17 − 50 g). Comparing large- and smaller-bodied subspecies revealed 9 candidate genes in three genomic regions associated with body mass. Further comparisons to the five smallest subspecies endemic to California revealed eight SNPs within four of the candidate genes (GARNL3, RALGPS1, ANGPTL2, and COL15A1) associated with body mass and varying as predicted by Bergmann’s Rule. Our results support the hypothesis that co-variation in environment, body mass and genotype reflect the influence of natural selection on local adaptation and a capacity for contemporary evolution in this diverse species

    Courtney Myers Ragsdell, a senior nursing major at Ouachita Baptist University, received the 2022 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Young Leadership Award as a part of the “40 Nurse Leaders Under 40” leadership program from the Arkansas Center for Nursing, Inc. The ACN presents this award to the top five BSN students in the state, recognizing recipients for their commitment to service, dedication and leadership for the advancement of nursing in Arkansas. Ragsdell, from Kansas City, Mo., received her award in the fall during a ceremony held at the Benton Event Center

I grew up knowing I wanted to pursue a higher education to finish what my parents started. When World War II ended, and my grandfather came home from the front lines in Europe, there was no work in the Texarkana area. He and his young family moved to northeastern Oklahoma where he found a job at the newly opened BF Goodrich tire factory. And so it is that my story starts in Commerce, Okla., and not Ashdown, Ark
