Mentorship beyond graduation
My grandmother could make the best biscuits ever over an open fire. My dad could tune a guitar to perfect pitch without a tuner. Those were just a few of the many skills they taught me. But there was one skill they could not teach me: navigating the world of higher education.
As smart and gifted as they were, high school graduation was not a part of their stories, much less college. When I graduated from high school, they were thrilled. They never imagined there would be multiple graduations to follow
The Legend of the Lady in Black: 100 years later
As Cone-Bottoms Hall celebrates its centennial birthday, stories arise that were passed down from generation to generation surrounding the iconic building on campus. One urban legend follows the story of Jane and her mysterious death.
In the early 1920’s, Jane began dating Joshua, a student at Henderson State University. As their relationship blossomed, Joshua’s friends started to pressure him to break up with her. His friends taunted and teased him because of the longstanding rivalry between the two schools as it was almost unheard of to be seen with someone from the opposing school.
On the eve of Henderson’s Homecoming, he ended things with Jane and took a Henderson girl to the Homecoming dance instead. Convinced her life could not go on without him, Jane walked back to Cone- Bottoms, which served as a women’s dormitory then, and put on a floor-length black dress and veil before throwing herself down the elevator shaft.
Almost a century later, it is rumored that her ghost still haunts the halls of Cone-Bottoms, where she warns against dating a Henderson boy and can be seen still wearing the fateful long black dress and veil she died in
Falling in love with Ouachita (all over again)
Let’s face it. It’s still cold outside, and we’re all still catching up on rest that was lost in the busyness of the first few weeks back after Christmas break. The winter is tiring, and sometimes that can lengthen the second semester.
Maybe you weren’t excited to move back into your dorm or your apartment after break. Maybe you weren’t excited to wake up early and go to class. Maybe you’ve forgotten what it felt like to step foot on Ouachita’s campus for the first time. Maybe you need a reminder – a “how-to,” if you will.
We all had a “why” when it came to choosing Ouachita. Whether it was a family member, a Tiger Tunes show 10 years ago, an opportunity in your major or craft or simply a feeling of warmth that hit when you saw “Arkadelphia” plastered over every business you passed when coming into town for the first time. You were called to Ouachita for a purpose, and I think we all possess a fear of losing our love for our school that we call home

Why leadership matters.
I’m 60 years old, but I clearly remember the spring of my senior year in high school. I grew up in a small town in Missouri. After spending a week in Washington D.C., I returned home dreaming about a career in politics and government. I thought it could be a meaningful way to make a difference. (I also had decided to give up my dream of being an NBA basketball player given I’m five foot five.)
To help me take the next step in that dream, I spent the summer volunteering full-time for a little-known state-wide candidate. He didn’t win the race, but I loved the experience. As a college student, I became involved in local politics, took a semester off to work on another campaign, and three years after graduating from college managed a state-wide campaign for that same candidate – and he won.
I went to work for him as the education advisor. The experience gave me early leadership opportunities and an appreciation for how politics and government need people of Christian faith. Along the way, my dream of making a difference evolved – and eventually brought me to Ouachita

I am constantly putting myself under pressure which causes a great sense of being overwhelmed. When overwhelmed I deal with all sorts of anxiety. A lot of times I feel trapped, letting my thoughts overwhelm me to a point where it feels like I am struggling to breathe, and this is what the water and head in a fishbowl represents in my photo
The Effects of Light Intensity on Oxygen Production of Arthrospira plantensis
Arthrospira plantensis (spirulina) is a photosynthetic alga known for its health benefits. The goal was to determine the most effective light intensity for oxygen production and overall health of the algae. Samples of mixed spiral and straight spirulina and mostly spiral spirulina were grown under three different light intensities, and trends in oxygen production and cell counts were observed over 120 hours. Generally, there were peaks in oxygen production and cell counts 48 and 96 hours after start of the experiments, and dips in oxygen production and cell counts after 72 hours. While the spiral variety had the highest oxygen production after 24 hours, and the mixed variety under the control light had the highest oxygen production after 48 hours, the oxygen production across all treatments after 120 hours was similar. There was not a light intensity that resulted in significantly higher oxygen levels or cell production
Investigating Three novel Porphyrins for the Possible Treatment for Lung Cancer Using Red and White Light
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment method for various illnesses including cancer that uses a special drug, called a photosensitizer (PS). When a patient is injected with a PS, over time the PS is absorbed by the cancerous tumor. Light is then applied to area for treatment. The light then causes the drug to be activated, and singlet oxygen is produced that kills the cells. The PS in partnership with light causes cancer cells to undergo apoptosis. This research focuses on testing three novel water-soluble porphyrins, ZnTPPEA, H2TPP – TRIS, and H2TPPADIPA, as potential photosensitizing agents. All three novel photosensitizing agents were tested on the A549 human lung carcinoma cell line using MTT assays to determine cell viability using red light, white light, and dark conditions
Optimizing a Passive Tracking Solar Panel System
Renewable energy has been gaining attention from individuals to government agencies as the negative effects of fossil fuel usage has been realized. Solar power is a reliable and green alternative to fossil fuels. Solar power is harnessed through the direct absorption of rays from the sun. In this experiment, a passive sun-tracking system using a shape memory alloy (SMA), gears, and a fresnel lens rotated a solar panel to face the sun throughout the day. At the end of the day the system rotates the solar panel back to the east in preparation for the next day’s cycle to begin. This system relies on zero external electricity, making it cost effective and suitable for remote locations where electricity is not easily obtained. The rotation mechanism for the system starts with the shape memory alloy being heated by the sun, which causes it to contract, pulling the sprag gear and turning the solar panel to face the sun. In order to turn the solar panel back to the east at the end of the day, a plastic arm that has elevated toward the reset system trigger will push the trigger over allowing the gears and panel to return to their initial positions. The focus for the project this summer was to optimize the reset system, optimize the Fresnel lens placement, and complete testing
