Honoring firsts (Green-Blevins Rotunda dedication to Ouachita\u27s first African American graduates)
Get PDFCarolyn Jean Green and the late Gustine Blevins, who in 1966 became the first African American graduates in Ouachita’s history, were celebrated Nov. 12 when the Green-Blevins Rotunda was dedicated in their honor.
The community-wide service and reception brought a standing-room-only crowd of students, faculty, staff and visitors to the refurbished rotunda in McClellan Hall at 10 a.m. for a program featuring guest speakers Green and Dr. LaJuan Martin, Blevins’ son.
“I have felt like I’m truly coming home,” said Green, the first Black student to live in a Ouachita dorm and pledge a social club, options she didn’t have at the institution where she began her studies. “I know life can have us go in several directions – take us left instead of right and down instead of up – but by the grace of God, I was able to stay the course.
Ouachita to begin construction on track & field complex

Dr. Lei Cai inducted into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame
Get PDFDr. Lei Cai, professor of piano in the Division of Music in Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Performing Arts, has been inducted into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame. He was recognized during a ceremony held at the historic Steinway piano factory in New York City in October.
“We were absolutely thrilled, but not the least bit surprised, to hear that Dr. Cai was selected for this incredible honor,” said Dr. Caroline Taylor, professor and dean of the School of Performing Arts. “To have a pianist of his caliber on our faculty is truly a blessing.”
Cai was among 68 inductees from the United States and Canada chosen because of their outstanding instruction and work in acoustic piano education and their dedication to teaching the next generation of pianists

Georgia Hickingbotham remembered for generous investment in Ouachita students
Get PDFHaving a residential campus helps give Ouachita Baptist University its uniqueness. And Georgia Hickingbotham was a friend of Ouachita who helped give residence living its heart.
Hickingbotham, who died Dec. 7 at 89, is well known for her successful business career. She was one of the first women in Arkansas elected to serve as an officer in a bank and was a co-founder of TCBY, which became the largest frozen yogurt chain in the world.
At Ouachita, “Mrs. Georgia” is also remembered for her generous personal investment in women students that began in 2013 when her husband of nearly 50 years, Frank, surprised her on their anniversary by naming a Ouachita residence hall in her honor. On a campus that values community, Georgia Hickingbotham Hall has an especially welcoming sense of place due to her kindness, creativity and care. Ouachita alum Hannah Pilcher served for five years on Ouachita’s Residence Life team as area coordinator for Georgia Hickingbotham Hall
