The History of Dog Training and Its Importance to Modern Day Training Techniques

    Get PDF
A trainer must have a thorough understanding of history and its foundational principles to select and utilize modern techniques effectively. The world of dog training is a vast community that consists of many different methodologies, trainers, and philosophies, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. It is vital for any dog trainer, whether simply training their pet dog to come and sit or training a high-performance military working dog, to have a thorough understanding of today’s training philosophies and the philosophies that came before. Dog training is a living, breathing science that must be viewed as the sum of experiences and movements

Effects Fidget Toys Have on Focus

    Get PDF
In the current study, we investigated how college students’ levels of focus were affected by fidget toys. Participants’ took two 10-question math assessments and watched a 5-minute video in between them. 46 people received a fidget toy to play with during the second math assessment, and 46 people did not receive a fidget toy. Observers rated participants on off-task behaviors through a coded system called the RRC System on a scale of 1 to 5. College students’ were shown to have an increased on-task behavior and the grades of the math assessment with the fidget toy rather than without it

Developing a Protocol for Bacteriophage Guided Evolution

    No full text
Experimentation was done to generate a protocol for expanding the host ranges of bacteriophages based on the Appelmans Protocol. Temperate bacteriophages were introduced to multiple species of Gordonia bacteria in a 96-well plate. Lysis was determined using spectrophotometer absorbance values for each well and compared to the known host range of each phage. The spectrophotometer results were compared at 48 hours post infection and 72 hours post infection, and 48 hours was found to be the optimal time post infection to record data. A ratio of 100 phage to 1 bacteria was effective for determining bacterial lysis in the protocol

Development of Specialty Histological Staining Methods for Zebrafish

    No full text
Danio rerio (zebrafish) have become a useful animal research model having a high similarity to humans with regards to their histological makeup. Standard protocols relating to the care and use of zebrafish were compiled and adapted for implementation for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee review of the Ouachita Baptist University animal facility. These protocols include all facets of daily maintenance and care of the animals through euthanizing, emergency procedures, lab personnel training, and website development for public feedback regarding animal welfare. An additional part of this project was the optimizing and adaptation of histology protocols for zebrafish necropsy, tissue preparation and staining procedures for standard hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining as well as Masson’s trichrome staining. These procedures will be used to yield histological samples during undergraduate coursework in histology in the fall semester as well as support future research. The specific staining procedures, which use detailed protocols adapted from current best practices, will be used to visualize and distinguish various tissue types for examination and comparison in future research. Furthermore, zebrafish breeding protocols were optimized for studies concerning sex determination of zebrafish in the early embryonic stages of development

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to observe the initial difference in the balance of athletes with and without lower extremity surgeries; and determine whether a simple balance intervention is impactful. After four weeks of this program, we will determine if the volunteers’ balance has remained the same, progressed, or declined and if the athlete has overcompensated in the injured extremity
