Progress Towards Phage Stability for Possible Oral Phage Therapy
Get PDFOral cavities or caries is a localized deterioration of the tooth caused by an accumulation of harmful bacteria. This research intends to integrate bacteriophages onto unwaxed dental floss as a possible future preventative treatment for oral cavities. Bacteriophages are viruses that degrade the composition of bacterial populations by invading and reproducing inside bacterial hosts. The experimental framework involves soaking unwaxed floss in the bacteriophages named Phrick and Stonehill. The effectiveness of infection is measured by applying the phage-infused floss on an agar plate with Gordonia terrae CAG3, then analyzing the diameter of the plaque around the floss. This research will provide insight on the interactions between bacteriophages and bacterial pathogens, focusing on stability of phage within the oral solutions. Preliminary results confirm phage stability on filter paper, successfully lysing bacteria on an agar plate. The result carries significance in areas of dentistry and microbiology
Developing ZnTPP-4AB as a Potential Photodynamic Therapy Agent
Get PDFPhotodynamic therapy is a fairly new technique used in cancer treatment involving the use of a photosensitizer and light exposure to kill malignant cells. In this research, the use of ZnTPP-4AB as a photosensitizer and red light as a source of radiant light energy was explored in terms of cytotoxicity in the A549 lung cancer cell line. ZnTPP-4AB was synthesized by replacing the carbonyl functional groups on the ZnTPPC porphyrin with 4-amino-1-butanol. Following synthesis, the new porphyrin was purified through the use of Sephadex LH-20 and G-50 in column chromatography in order to remove impurities. To confirm the identity and structure of the product, ZnTPP-4AB was analyzed through nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies. Purity of the final compound was determined using HPLC. Lastly, the efficacy of ZnTPP-4AB as a photosensitizer was examined by analyzing its cytotoxicity when paired with red light using MTT assay on the A549 lung cancer cell line. An additional experiment was also conducted in which the A549 cells were put into a hypoxic environment (mimicking a tumor) prior to treatment with the porphyrin, and these were compared with the first MTT assay

Estelle McMillan Blake was an original faculty member of Ouachita Baptist College when its doors opened in 1886. Blake taught English at Ouachita for 53 years. Because of her support of the school’s library, the former Blake Library on campus was named for her in the 1930s. The Arkansas Baptist paper once noted about this beloved faculty member, “every student that has known her has created in his heart an undying love for this great Christian character and teacher.” The following is an excerpt from “Ouachita in the Roaring Twenties,” written by Blake’s nephew-in-law, Donald Tatman.

Maddy Moore to present senior recital March 8
Get PDFMaddy Moore, a musical theatre major from Mesquite, Texas, will perform her senior recital March 8 at 11 a.m. in McBeth Recital Hall at Ouachita Baptist University. This recital is a project Moore has been working on since last semester and will include music, theatre and dance pieces. The performance is free and open to the public.
Moore will sing six songs, dance to two songs and perform two theatrical scenes. Some of her pieces include “Climbing Uphill” from The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, “I Want to Go to Hollywood” from Grand Hotel by Maury Yeston and “Love/Sick” by John Cariani. Having spent the past year thinking and preparing for this recital, Moore said, “Even though it’s my recital, there are so many people I’m thankful for who have helped me out and have helped prepare me for my performances.
