Phase variation and mechanical properties of waste calcium carbonate to substitute quartz in composite slab production

    No full text
Owing to the fast-emerging nature and rapid advancements in the construction industry, huge volumes of marble dust (MD) are generated as reject during slab cutting in marble processing, causing significant environmental hazards. Nowadays, quartz composite slabs have increasingly been preferred in building works due to their excellent hygienic property and mechanical strength. Composite slab is produced using micronized quartz as filler, the grinding of which is an energy-intensive process. Substitution of micronized quartz with MD at different percentages was investigated in natural form and after roasting. Natural MD offered appreciable physical properties closer to those of a quartz composite slab. Physical properties slightly retrograded by quartz supplementation in the raw form. Roasting the filler led to the formation of rounded Ca–silicate. Wollastonite was the first phase formed after sintering at the lowest MD percentage and shortest roasting times. Larnite became dominating phase first by increasing MD percentage and roasting time, and then calcio-olivine formed. Physical characterization test results demonstrated that hardnesses of new phase and particle shape were the key parameters that improved slabs’ mechanical properties of. Hard rounded larnite particles improved mechanical behavior of slabs having the synergic effect of quartz, whereas wollastonite did not show a significant effect

Background: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the world, and the Type II diabetes associated with obesity led researchers to seek alternative methods to treat these two chronic diseases. In the case of obesity and diabetes, changes occur in the levels of inflammatory mediators. A study was conducted to investigate the molecular mechanism of the Rheum ribes L. plant regarding obesity and inflammation. Methods and Results: Differentiated 3T3-L1 mouse cell lines were used as an experimental model. A dose–response relationship was established to determine at what dose and time of treatment the R. ribes L. plant extract would act effectively. To assess expression on the transcriptional level, q-PCR analyses were performed. The primers to evaluate the expression levels of genes such as Dgat1, Lpl, Fasn, ColV, Il-6, and Mcp1, which are known to be associated with obesity and insulin resistance, inflammation, and cell skeletal restructuring was designed using NCBI sequences. 18S was chosen as the housekeeping gene for normalization. Conclusion: It was found that applying 50 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL of R. ribes root extract to 3T3-L1 adipocyte cells for 24 and 48 h resulted in anti- obesity and anti-inflammatory effects on the genes examined at the transcriptional level. It is an effective study to understand the molecular mechanisms by which R. ribes, which is known to have anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and anti- inflammatory activities, and to establish a link between these activitie

    No full text
This study aims to evaluate the perceptions of teacher candidates regarding child abuse and neglect as well as propose preventive measures. Utilizing a phenomenological design, a qualitative research method, the study focuses on understanding the unique experiences of individuals. The sample was selected through purposive random sampling and homogeneous sampling techniques. Data was gathered from 13 participants, including 7 elementary education candidates and 6 pre-school education candidates, at the Faculty of Education of a public university in Turkey during the 2018-2019 academic year. The participants' work was analyzed using "content and descriptive analysis" methods. The study found that teacher candidates depicted child abuse and neglect as "a distressing situation that makes children unhappy." In their drawings, they predominantly used black to represent abused children, while abusers were symbolized through metaphors such as "dirty, darkened hands." The research demonstrated that the teacher candidates were capable of defining child abuse, understanding its various forms, empathizing with the emotions of abused children, and proposing potential solutions

The Effect of Fish Meal and Plant-Based Diets on the Growth and Nutritional Composition of White Worms (Enchytraeus albidus Henle, 1837) in Various Substrates

    No full text
In this study, the growth and nutritional composition of Enchytraeus albidus (white worm) were investigated using different combinations of culture substrates and feeds. The aim was to determine the utilization of White worm for recycling the fish feeds in case of expiration. The white worms were either given a plant-based diet or a fish feed-based diet (commercial extruded Seabass feed) in four different culture substrates (rice husk, peat, cocopeat, garden soil). There were altogether eight experimental groups with triplicates. The initial stocking density of white worms was 150 worms/unit (2.2 Liters of cylindrical containers), and all the experiments were carried out in the dark at a constant temperature at 18oC. Worms were collected from the substrate by heat treatment and the counting was done manually, using dissection tools. Proximate composition of the produced white worms was measured with regard to given ratios of the protein, carbohydrate and lipid sources provided from the feed materials. The plant-based diet yielded the highest worm density of the study (2220 worms/unit) while the garden soil was used as substrate. In comparison, the fish feed-based diet fed white worms reached a significantly lower density (627 worms/ unit) although the optimal nutritional value for the fish diet was ensured. These results showed that the carbohydrate content of the feed for white worm should be adjusted for optimal growth. Furthermore, the use of a combined plant- and fish feed-based diet can result in high growth performance and improved nutritional value during fish feed production

The article “Religious literature”, one of the pioneering articles on Turkish religious literature, written by Ali Suad and published in Mihrâb journal is one of the early articles on the theory of Turkish religious literature. This study which focuses on the author’s related article provides the opportunity to see the thoughts about Turkish religious literature of an Ottoman intellectual from the early 1920’s, who revealed that religious literature was divided into two different periods. Moreover, it tells about the works written in the old and new periods, which Ali Suad distinguishes by using the concepts of “absolute” and “bounded”, and how the literary figures who produced these works established and continued Turkish religious literature. At the end of the study, the place of Turkish religious literature in Turkish literature is questioned by focusing on “Religious Literature”, one of the texts that establish the theoretical background of Turkish religious literature
