    The relationship between orthorexia nervosa tendencies and OCD symptoms in healthcare professionals

    Objectives: Concurrent with the recent popularity of concepts related to organic nutrition, detoxification, healthy living, and natural products of many types, there has been a rise in the incidence of orthorexia nervosa, broadly defined as an excessive preoccupation with healthy eating. This condition is frequently observed among professionals for whom physical appearance is important, as well as doctors, nurses, dieticians, and others with medical knowledge of nutrition. Obsessive-compulsive disorder may accompany orthorexia. The aim of this study was to examine the association between orthorexic tendencies and obsessive-compulsive symptoms among healthcare personnel. Methods:The sample consisted of 183 male and female healthcare personnel aged 20-65 years who voluntarily participated in the study. A questionnaire was used to determine sociodemographic characteristics. The ORTO-15 scale was used to measure orthorexic tendencies, and the Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) was used to assess obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Results: There was a statistically significant relationship between orthorexic tendencies and age, sex, a diagnosis of chronic disease, regular use of medication, and observing a specific diet (p<0.05). The mean ORTO-15 score was 37.56 +/- 4.42 (female: 37.18 +/- 4.36, male: 38.48 +/- 4.45). The mean MOCI score was 61.90 +/- 6.80, and there was a statistically significant correlation between these values. Analysis of the subscales and the overall score also revealed a statistically significant relationship. Conclusion: The results revealed a statistically significant difference in orthorexic tendencies based on age and sex (p<0.05). No statistically significant relationship was detected in the ORTO-15 scores by body mass index values. A statistically significant difference was detected in the MOCI score according to the marital status, sex, and education variables (p<0.01). There was also a statistically significant difference seen in the evaluation of the ORTO-15 score and the MOCI score.The findings indicated an association between orthorexic tendencies and obsessive-compulsive symptoms

    Aim: To evaluate the ocular surface alterations in dry eye disease related to Sjögren's syndrome. Materials and Methods: The data of 25 patients followed up in our clinic with dry eye disease due to Sjögren's syndrome and 25 healthy control groups were evaluated prospectively. In order to evaluate the ocular surface, the ocular surface diseases index, Schirmer 1 test, tear film break-up time, corneal fluorescein staining, strip meniscometry test and confocal microscopy results were evaluated. Results: In patients with Sjögren's syndrome, Schirmer 1 test was 2.41.1 mm, tear film break-up time was 3.10.9 seconds, corneal fluorescein staining score was 4.12.2, strip meniscometry score was 1.80.8 mm, ocular surface diseases index score was 22.111.6, dendritic cell density 3811.3 cells/mm2 and subbasal nerve density 950375 μm/mm2. In the healthy control group, Schirmer 1 test was 15.16.2 mm, tear film break-up time was 12.23.4 seconds, corneal fluorescein staining score was 2.2±1.8, strip meniscometry score was 5.72.1 mm, ocular surface diseases index score was 4.32.5, dendritic cell density was 8.32.7 cells/mm2 and subbasal nerve density was evaluated as 1077320 μm/mm2. Dendritic cell density was found to be significantly higher and subbasal nerve density was found to be significantly lower in patients with Sjögren's syndrome compared to the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Laser scanning in vivo confocal microscopy is a useful method for evaluating structures such as corneal cell morphology, inflammatory cell density, and nerve fiber density in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. For this reason, detailed analysis of confocal microscope results together with ocular surface evaluation guides the diagnosis and treatment of patients.Amaç: Sjögren sendromuna bağlı olarak gelişen kuru göz hastalığında meydana gelen oküler yüzey değişikliklerini oküler yüzey testleri ve konfokal mikroskopi ile değerlendirmek. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kliniğimizde Sjögren sendromuna bağlı kuru göz hastalığı ile takip edilen 25 hastanın ve 25 sağlıklı kontrol grubunun verileri prospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Tüm hastalara genel sistemik hastalık sorgusu ile birlikte tam oftalmik muayene yapıldı. Oküler yüzeyi değerlendirmek için çalışmaya katılan bireylerde oküler yüzey hastalıkları indeksi, Schirmer 1 testi, gözyaşı kırılma zamanı, korneal flöresein boyanma, strip meniskometri testi ve konfokal mikroskopi sonuçları değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Sjögren sendromlu olgularda Schirmer 1 testi 2,41,1 mm, gözyaşı kırılma zamanı 3,10,9 saniye, korneal flöresein boyanma skoru 4,12,2, strip meniskometri skoru 1,80,8 mm, oküler yüzey hastalıkları indeksi skoru 22,111,6, dendritik hücre yoğunluğu 3811,3 hücre/mm2 ve subbazal sinir yoğunluğu 950375 μm/mm2 olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Sağlıklı kontrol grubunda ise Schirmer 1 testi 15,16,2 mm, gözyaşı kırılma zamanı 12,23,4 saniye, korneal flöresein boyanma skoru 2,2±1,8, strip meniskometri skoru 5,72,1 mm, oküler yüzey hastalıkları indeksi skoru 4,32,5, dendritik hücre yoğunluğu 8,32,7 hücre/mm2 ve subbazal sinir yoğunluğu 1077320 μm/mm2 olarak değerlendirildi. Sjögren sendromlu olgularda dendritik hücre yoğunluğu kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı olarak yüksek, subbazal sinir yoğunluğu anlamlı derecede düşük olarak değerlendirildi (p<0,001). Sonuç: Lazer tarayıcı in vivo konfokal mikroskopi, Sjögren sendromu olan hastalarda kornea hücreleri morfolojisi, inflamatuar hücre yoğunluğu ve sinir lifi yoğunluğu gibi yapıların değerlendirilmesi için yararlı bir yöntemdir. Bu nedenle oküler yüzey değerlendirmesi ile birlikte konfokal mikroskopi sonuçlarının detaylı analiz edilmesi hastaların tanı ve tedavisinde yol gösterici olmaktadır

    Examining the relationship between subjective wellbeing and emotional eating in adolescents in Turkey

    Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between subjective wellbeing and emotional eating in adolescents. Methods: A total of 231 high school students completed a demographic questionnaire and two scales; the emotional eating scale adapted for use in children and adolescents and the adolescent subjective wellbeing scale. Results: The data showed negative and very weak relationships between the unsettled emotional state subscale of the emotional eating scale and the positive emotional state subscale (-0.146), the satisfaction with life subscale (-0.143), and the adolescent subjective wellbeing total score (-0.146). Adolescents' body perceptions, their family types, family income levels, and other variables had an impact on their state of subjective wellbeing, and variables such as gender and their father's level of education had an effect on their emotional eating. Conclusions: Emotional eating in adolescence can become a barrier to an individual's assuming future roles and responsibilities. Due to these risks, it is important to identify and reinforce the factors that help adolescents adapt and improve their subjective wellbeing

    A Criticism of the British Left in Trevor Griffiths's The Party in Light of '68 Paris Student Riots

    Among the political playwrights of the post-war British drama, Trevor Griffiths is known for his commitment to socialist ideals and his continuous search for an ideal social(ist) structure in his works. Coming from a working-class background and having met many notable intellectual socialists prior to his dramatic career, Trevor Griffiths dedicated his playwriting to debate about the present and future of socialism in Britain and elsewhere. Despite Griffiths's loyal attachment to socialism, his works provide a criticism of the left, left-wing parties, lack of unity among the proletariat, and lack of support and cooperation of the leftist parties in his country. The Party (1973) is one of those plays in which he provides a dialectical approach to an ideal understanding of socialism that is based on unity between the workers, the party as an organisation and the intelligentsia. Griffiths's main concern is to lay out some of the reasons for the failure of the left and claim that a true socialist revolution can never be possible unless a commitment is achieved by all involved parties. This paper discusses socialist Trevor Griffiths's play The Party as a criticism of the left in relation to prevalent concerns of Britain in the 1970s.While evaluating the reasons for Griffiths's criticism, the discussion of the play is also related to the Paris student riots as a casein-point failed socialist revolution attempt due to similar problems Griffiths observes in his country

    Cytotoxic and Antioxidant Potential of Chloroform Extract of Holothuria tubulosa Gmelin, 1791

    Abstract: Natural products are promising anticancer agents and antioxidants. The present study was aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic and antioxidant potential and the contents of phenolic compounds of a chloroform extract from Holothuria tubulosa collected from the Gökova Gulf (Muğla, Turkey) for the first time. Cell viability was assessed by the MTT assay. Apoptotic cell death was analyzed by flow cytometry. The antioxidant activity of the extract was determined by the DPPH radical scavenging activity assay, the ABTS radical cation scavenging activity assay, the β-carotene-linoleic acid and FRAP assays and by the phosphomolybdenum method. Total flavonoid and tannin contents in the extract were investigated. Also, the phenolic compounds of the extract were detected by HPLC. The extract showed the potential cytotoxic effect against cancer cells and was capable of inducing apoptosis in A549 and HeLa cells. Overall, the antioxidant capacity of the extract may be evaluated as low. The phenolic compound content of the extract was also found to be low. The most abundant component in the extract was ellagic acid (482.293 μg/g extract) according to the HPLC analysis. Our results may contribute to further studies on the use of H. tubulosa for obtaining new anticancer and other therapeutic agents

    Determination and speciation of selenium in water samples collected from Mugla (Turkey) province by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry

    In this work, determination of selenium in various water samples was done by using hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. The most appropriate values of HCl concentration, NaBH4 concentration, NaOH concentration, flow rate of argon and flow rate of waste solution were determined. The optimum concentration of the HCl, NaBH4 and NaOH solutions were found to be 7.0 mol L-1, 1.0% and 0.75%, respectively. The optimum flow rate of Ar gas and waste solution were also found to be 100.9 mL min(-1) and 4.0 mL min(-1), respectively. Values of LOD and LOQ were calculated separately for total Se and Se(IV). LOD and LOQ values were calculated 0.56 mu g L-1, 1.87 mu g L-1 for total Se and 0.72 mu g L-1, 2.40 mu g L-1 for Se(IV), respectively. The precision was evaluated by relative standard deviation (RSD%) was found to be 3.5% for total Se and 3.1% for Se(IV) (n = 11). A standard reference material (NIST 1643e) was used in order to check the accuracy of the proposed method. There was a good agreement between certified and found values for standard reference material. The method was applied to the analysis of total Se and Se(IV) concentrations in tap water samples collected from the various regions of Mugla. Proposed method showed spike recovery ranges from 92% to 116% in water samples

    Evaluation of Bone Fractures in Patients Admitted to the Forensic Medicine Outpatient Clinic: Descriptive Research

    Amaç: Adli tıpta yaralanmaların ciddiyetinin belirlenmesi, ne şiddette travma ile oluştuğunun belirlenmesi açısından hukuki bir öneme sahiptir. Türk Ceza Kanunu'na göre kemik kırıklarının yaşam fonksiyonları üzerindeki etki- leri rapor edilmelidir. Bu çalışmada, adli olgularda kırık lokalizasyonu, sayısı, ağırlığı ve travmanın türü ile nedenselliği ve kemik kırıklı olgulara medikole- gal yaklaşımın nasıl olması gerektiğini tartışabilmek amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Muğla Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Adli Tıp Polikliniğinde, 2014-2020 yılları arasında rapor düzenlenmiş adli olgulardan kemik kırığı tes- pit edilen olguların adli raporları retrospektif olarak incelenmiştir. Olguların yaşı, cinsiyeti, kırık sayısı, hangi kemiklerin kırıldığı, kırık bölgeleri, kırığa neden olan travmatik olay, adli tıbbi olarak belirlenen kırık ağırlığı irdelenmiş, kategorik verilerin karşılaştırılmasında ki-kare testi ve T testi kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar frekanslar ve yüzde olarak sunulmuştur. Bulgular: Rapor düzenle- nen olguların 2.625’inde (%21,9) kırık mevcuttur. Kırıklı olguların %80,4’ü erkek, %19,6’sı kadındır. Kırık ağırlığı en fazla %47,9 oranıyla orta derecede (2-3 puan) bulunmuştur. Kırık ağırlığı açısından kadın ve erkekler arasında an- lamlı bir farklılık saptanmamıştır. 15-24 ve 25-64 yaş gruplarında hafif puanlı kırıklar, 0-14 ile 65 yaş ve üzeri yaş gruplarında ağır puanlı kırıklar daha faz- ladır. Kazalarda “ağır” kırık, etkili eylemlerde “hafif” kırık oluşma oranı daha yüksektir. Üst ekstremite ve pelvis kırıkları kadınlarda, kafa ve yüz bölgesi kı- rıkları ise erkeklerde daha fazladır. Etkili eylemlerde, yüz kemiklerinde kırık- lar fazla; omur ve alt ekstremite kırıkları anlamlı derecede düşüktür. En fazla kırık saptanan kemikler sırasıyla nazal kemik (%20,0), kosta(lar) (%13,3), el parmak kemikleri (%9,5), radius (%8,3) ve tibiadır (%8,0). Sonuç: Oldukça büyük bir seride, adli olgularda saptanan kemik kırıklarının analizini içeren ça- lışma sonuçlarının, adli tıp literatürüne ve ileri çalışmalar için veri tabanı oluş- turulmasına katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.Objective: Determining the severity of injuries in forensic cases has a legal importance in determining how severe the trauma is. According to the Turkish Penal Code, the effects of bone fractures on life functions should be reported. In this study; it is aimed to discuss the causality with fracture lo- calization, number, severity and type of trauma and how medico legal approach should be in forensic cases with bone fractures. Material and Methods: Be- tween 2014-2020, in the Forensic Medicine Outpatient Clinic of Muğla Train- ing and Research Hospital, the forensic reports of forensic cases with bone fractures were evaluated retrospectively. Age, gender, number and regions of fractures, the traumatic event, and the fracture severity were analyzed, the chi- square test and T test were used to compare the categorical data. Results are pre- sented as frequencies and percentages. Results: There were fractures in 2,625 (21.9%) of the whole forensic cases. 80.4% of the cases were men and 19.6% were women. The fractures severity was found to be moderate with a rate (2-3 point) of 47.9%, there was no significant difference between men and women. Mild fractures are more common in ages between 15-24 and 25-64, and severe fractures are more common in ages between 0-14 and over 65. The rate of se- vere bone fractures in accidents and mild bone fractures in the beating was sig- nificantly higher. While upper extremity and pelvis fractures were more common in women, head and facial fractures were more common in men. Fa- cial bone fractures were more common in beating injuries. Vertebral and lower extremity fractures were significantly lower. The most common broken bones were nasal (20.0%), rib(s) (13.3%), phalanx (9.5%), radius (8.3%) and tibia (8.0%), respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study, in which an in- depth analysis of bone fractures detected in forensic cases in a large series will contribute to the forensic literature. We think that the results will create a database for further studies

    Synthesis of benzoyl esters of beta-amyrin and lupeol and evaluation of their antibiofilm and antidiabetic activities

    Diabetes as well as the enhanced microbial multidrug resistance resulting from biofilm formation, constitutes some of the major health problems around the world. Triterpenoids and their derivatives have been shown to have a great contribution in this domain. A small library of benzoyl esters of lupeol and beta-amyrin was synthesized and their structures were characterized by electronic ionization mass spectrometry (EIMS). Their inhibitory potential on pathogenic bacteria biofilms, as well as their inhibitory action on alpha-amylase and beta-glucosidase activities were evaluated. The mass fragmentation patterns from the EIMS data confirm the success of the reactions. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) varied from 250 to 1000 mu g/mL in the antimicrobial activities. Biofilm inhibitory potential of the compounds on S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans were performed at MIC and sub-MIC concentrations and the results showed concentration-dependent inhibition of biofilms. At MIC, the highest biofilm inhibition was exhibited by compound 7 on S. aureus (60.8 +/- 3.2%), compound 3 on E. coli (60.5 +/- 2.8%) and compound 8 on C. albicans (56.9 +/- 2.5%). For all tested compounds, percentage inhibition of violacein production was 100% at MIC except for the starting compounds 1 and 2. At 24.24 mu g/mL the percentage of inhibition varied from 22.9 +/- 1.2% to 42.1 +/- 1.0% for alpha-amylase inhibition and at a concentration of 10 mu g/mL the percentage of inhibition varied from 49.8 +/- 0.3% to 69.3 +/- 1.0% for beta-glucosidase inhibition. The highest inhibition was shown by compounds 7 and 8 on alpha-amylase and beta-glucosidase assays, respectively. The results show that introduction of benzoyl ester groups at C-3 of lupeol and beta-amyrin considerably improves their antibiofilm and antidiabetic pote

    Effects of different universal adhesives and surface treatments on repair bond strength between resin composites

    Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different universal adhesives and surface treatments on the repair bond strength between resin composites. Materials and Methods A total of 220 composite samples were divided into three groups according to the adhesive resin to be applied: 1) Scotchbond Universal, 2) G-Premio Bond, and 3) Peak Universal Bond. They were then divided into seven subgroups according to surface treatments (n = 10): A) air abrasion, B) air abrasion+silane, C) hydrofluoric acid, D) hydrofluoric acid+silane, E) air abrasion+hydrofluoric acid+silane, F) silane, and G) no surface treatment (negative control). After surface treatment, a repair composite was applied. Samples aged in the thermocycle were subjected to micro-tensile bond strength testing. Cohesive strength values of 10 non-aged composite blocks were used as a positive control. Kruskal-Wallis and one-way ANOVA tests were used for statistical evaluation. Fractured surfaces were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. Results In Scotchbond Universal and G-Premio Bond, the mean micro-tensile bond strength value of the no surface treatment subgroup was significantly lower than that of the positive control. All subgroups of Peak Universal Bond showed similar values to the positive control. Conclusion While Scotchbond Universal and G-Premio Bond required mechanical roughening before adhesive application, Peak Universal Bond did not require any surface treatment. Clinical Significance Different universal adhesives may show different repair bonding strengths with different surface treatments. Since achieving a standard in this regard can be associated with many independent factors, clinicians should determine how to apply the adhesive they use most effectively with the most appropriate surface treatment based on their own clinical experience
