    ometric Validation of The Turkish Version of The Questionnaire on The Integration of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Oncological Treatment

    ABSTRACT – Objective: The aim of this study was to psychometrically validate the Turkish version of the ques- tionnaire on the integration of complementary and alternative medicine (cam) in oncological treatment. Patients and Methods: This methodological study was conducted between December 2020 and September 2021 involving 247 cancer patients. To ensure cultural appropriateness of the scale, the sample size for each item of the scale was set at 5-10 patients. Results: Expectations for integrating CAM therapies into health care were improvement in the patient's over- all ability to cope with the disease, improvement in the patient's daily functioning, emotional and spiritual sup- port for the patient, and support for the patient's family (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the Turkish version of the Questionnaire on Integration of CAM in oncology treatment is an appropriate tool to assess beliefs and attitudes toward the integration of CAM approaches in cancer treatment and care

    Effects of reinforcing steel tanks with intermediate ring stiffeners on wind buckling during construction

    Many tank structures may not be stable during the construction phase, and this may lead to their becoming vulnerable to buckling under environmental loading conditions such as wind. Installing intermediate ring stiffeners of the proper size at the mid-height of the cylindrical shell may be the most effective way to stabilize these structures, especially under the effects of wind action. In the study, analytical and numerical studies were conducted to identify the required strength and stiffness for the intermediate ring stiffener. First, a new cylindrical shell-to- intermediate ring stiffness ratio was derived by considering curved beam and shell membrane theories. For strength criteria, the tributary height and the effect of shell- ring interaction on the internal forces and moments were examined by making use of Linear Analysis (LA) and Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis (GNA). The stress resultants developed in the intermediate ring stiffener were identified so that they could be used as strength criteria. For stiffness criteria, by considering the changes in the buckling resistance based on the developed stiffness ratio, an expression to compute the minumum intermediate ring stiffness was determined. In addition, Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis including Imperfections (GNIA) was also performed to examine the effect of the geometric imperfections on buckling strength of the steel tank with an intermediate ring stiffener, taking different imperfection amplitudes into account.     Use of Coontail as a Natural Phytoremediation Feed Additive for Common Carp

    Ceratophyllum demersum is a submerged, rootless, free-floating macrophyte and natural aquatic phytoremediation. C. demersum has high efficiency in absorbing large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus in the aquatic environment. In this study, the effects of a natural phytoremediation Ceratophyllum demersum meal, as a dietary supplement, on growth performance, feed utilization, and body composition of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) were investigated. This was the first attempt to use coontail as a feed additive for common carp. Four isonitrogenous (38% crude protein), isolipidic (8% crude lipid), and isoenergetic (18 kJ g(-1)) diets were formulated control group (0%), CM5 group (5%), CM10 group (10%) and CM15 group (15%) in feed. Each dietary treatment was administered to triplicate in groups of 15 fish (similar to 19 g). Carp were hand-fed to apparent saturation three times a day (09.00; 12.00 and 17.00). There was no difference between the control diet and 5% CM in terms of growth (final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate) and feed utilization (feed conversion rate, feed intake, feed efficiency) (p < 0.05). Increasing algae levels in diets improved protein levels in body compositions while decreasing lipid. There was no sign of appeared fish health indicators (disease or deformity) in all diet groups. This study results showed that instead of soybean meal, 5.75% and 6.07% as natural phytoremediation, C. demersum optimized the best growth and feed utilization performance in carp diets

    The Effect of Aerobic and Resistance Exercise after Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review

    Understanding the optimal time, length, intensity, and type of exercise program for bariatric surgery patients is crucial due to increased obesity prevalence and the number of performed bariatric procedures. Our aim for this review is to identify the effects of exercise on all aspects of health regarding the most recent and randomized studies. A total of 120 articles were reviewed through PubMed. As a result of the research, 11 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. A quality analysis and a risk of bias assessment of the trials included in this systematic review were performed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scoring and classification system. Narrative syntheses were given for this systematic review. The articles’ intervention description, outcomes, and results are given in detail in the Results Section. Most exercise interventions were carried out in the post-op stage in bariatric surgery patients. Only two studies were conducted before the scheduled procedure. Overall, aerobic training (AT) and resistance training (RT) combined exercise programs effectively improved clinical parameters, including cardiac function, lower extremity function, muscle strength and endurance, cardiovascular parameters, and functionality. Exercise training caused no additional effects on inflammation and endothelial dysfunction biomarkers. In the literature, no research identifies the effects of only AT on bariatric surgery patients. Therefore, this aspect should be considered when interpreting all the studies’ results. In conclusion, there is a need for research to examine only AT in bariatric surgery patients and for general exercise training studies, including better randomization and quality

    Is the Nutritional Composition of Safflower Oilseed Meal Sufficient for Alternative or Complementary Aqua Feeds-raw Material? Send mail to Yildirim Ö.;

    Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is grown in many countries, even in arid regions. Due to its important nutrients, safflower has the potential to be used as raw material for the nutrition of many animals and aquaculture species. For this reason, the objective of this study is to determine crude protein, crude oil, ash, and nitrogen-free extract (NFE) values, as well as amino acid, fatty acid, and mineral values in safflower seed meal. In addition, fish meal, soybean meal, wheat, and canola meal values are compared with safflower seed. On a dry matter basis, the crude protein, crude oil, crude ash, and NFE values were found at 19.42% ±0.32, 8.76% ±0.21, 2.82% ±0.1, and 62.68% ±0.88 respectively. Safflower meal contains significant arginine, histidine, and phenylalanine levels, with C18:2 n-6 being one of the most abundant fatty acids. According to the fatty acid values examined, the total saturated fatty acid values were to be 9.79%; the total monounsaturated fatty acid values are 27.58%; total n-6 PUFA values are 61.49%; total n-3 fatty acid values are 0.55% and total n-3 HUFA values are 0.22% in safflower oilseed meal. The potassium and magnesium content in safflower seed meal is similar to that of soybean meal and fishmeal. Safflower oilseed meal or oil can be used as complementary feedstuff in both marine and freshwater fish feeds. In future studies, observing the balance of essential amino acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids and conducting detailed studies will be effective in closing the gap in this area

    Dental Pulp Inflammation Initiates the Occurrence of Mast Cells Expressing the α1 and β1 Subunits of Soluble Guanylyl Cyclase

    The binding of nitric oxide (NO) to heme in the β1 subunit of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) activates both the heterodimeric α1β1 and α2β1 isoforms of the enzyme, leading to the increased production of cGMP from GTP. In cultured human mast cells, exogenous NO is able to inhibit mast cell degranulation via NO-cGMP signaling. However, under inflammatory oxidative or nitrosative stress, sGC becomes insensitive to NO. The occurrence of mast cells in healthy and inflamed human tissues and the in vivo expression of the α1 and β1 subunits of sGC in human mast cells during inflammation remain largely unresolved and were investigated here. Using peroxidase and double immunohistochemical incubations, no mast cells were found in healthy dental pulp, whereas the inflammation of dental pulp initiated the occurrence of several mast cells expressing the α1 and β1 subunits of sGC. Since inflammation-induced oxidative and nitrosative stress oxidizes Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the β1 subunit of sGC, leading to the desensitization of sGC to NO, we hypothesize that the NO- and heme-independent pharmacological activation of sGC in mast cells may be considered as a regulatory strategy for mast cell functions in inflamed human dental pulp

    Design, in Silico Studies and Biological Evaluation of New Chiral Thiourea and 1,3-Thiazolidine-4,5-dione Derivatives

    In this study, new chiral thiourea and 1,3-thiazolidine-4,5-dione derivatives were synthesized, it was aimed to evaluate the various biological activities and molecular docking of these compounds. Firstly, the new thioureas (1–16) were obtained by reacting 1-naphthylisothiocyanate with different chiral amines. Then, the chiral thioureas were cyclized with oxalyl chloride to obtain 1,3-thiazolidine-4,5-dione derivatives (17–32). All compounds were evaluated with several in vitro antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activities. Compound 30 was the most active compound against AChE, with a value of IC50=8.09±0.58 μM. On the other hand, all compounds were tested in silico absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) assays to better understand their bioavailability. These physicochemical properties, pharmacokinetics, and drug-likeness of all compounds were calculated using SwissADME. Furthermore, according to molecular docking analyses compound 30 exhibited significant binding affinities for all enzymes.     Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is an important health problem affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a non-invasive imaging tool that can visualize ocular surface diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate corneal structures and inflammatory cells with IVCM in DED patients. Material and methods: The patients were divided into three subgroups: group 1, consisting of 22 patients with aqueous tear insufficiency; group 2, consisting of 21 patients with evaporative type DED; and group 3, consisting of 20 healthy patients. Imaging was performed with IVCM. The corneal epithelium, nerves, stroma, endothelial and inflammatory cells were compared between groups. Results: There was a significant decrease in corneal epithelial cell density in cases with DED, and there was a significant increase in corneal basal epithelial cell density in the aqueous-deficient type. Keratocyte density was significantly increased in the aqueous-deficient type. A significant decrease in the number and density of sub-basal nerves was found in aqueous-deficient cases, and an increase was found in neural pilling and folding. Dendritic cell density, size, number and area were significantly increased in the aqueous-deficient type. There was also decreased corneal endothelial cell density in DED. Conclusion: We evaluated pathological changes in DED on the corneal surface by IVCM. This methodology is valuable in terms of objectively evaluating how the corneal surface is affected in accordance with disease severity and in predicting poor response to treatment

    A comparative assessment of the lagoons with water quality indexes and based on GIS: A study on the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea

    In this study, the current status of water quality in Gulluk Lagoon and Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon was examined by comparison using water quality indexes, multivariate statistical analyses and geographical information systems. Water quality parameters comprised of 9 variables i.e., WT, pH, DO, NO2-N, NO3-N, NH4-N, TP, SSM, BOD5 were measured in Gulluk Lagoon and Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon. Although there are important activities such as earthen pond fish farms, fish hatcheries, feldsbat and marble quarries, streams carrying domestic wastes, port, secondary residences and agricultural activities in Gulluk Lagoon, there are intense tourism and agricultural activities in Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon. The average concentrations of DO, TP, NO2-N results in Gulluk Lagoon and DO, TP and NH4-N results in Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon were determined in second class water quality according to surface water quality criteria. While both lagoons were found to be in "Good" quality class as a result of water quality index, Gulluk Lagoon was found to be "medium polluted" and Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon was found to be "slightly polluted" quality class as a result of comprehensive pollution index. It was observed that water quality index values of both lagoons decreased in the dry season, while their comprehensive pollution index values increased in the dry season. On the basis of the general averages of water quality index, it was found as Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon (85.0) > Gulluk Lagoon (84.05), and on the basis of the general averages of comprehensive pollution index, it was found as Gulluk Lagoon (1.34) > Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon (0.79). Relationships between variables were determined by geographical information systems (IDW technique) and statistical analyses (Descriptive statistics, Spearman rho correlation, Kruskal-Wallis test, multiple linear regression and Principal component analysis). As a result of multiple linear regression analysis in measured parameters, it was determined that the most important parameter affecting the water quality index in Gulluk Lagoon was NH4-N, and the most important parameter affecting the comprehensive pollution index was SSM. In Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon, it was observed that the water quality index was affected by the WT parameter and the comprehensive pollution index was affected by the SSM parameter. There is no difference in the concentrations of the average water quality parameters measured in both lagoons, and both lagoons are generally in the first and second class surface water quality class. However, Gulluk Lagoon, which contains more different pollutant sources than Koycegiz-Dalyan Lagoon, is shown to be more polluted according to water quality indexes. In addition, it has been determined that SSM is the most important parameter that determines the water quality among the measured water quality parameters of both lagoons

    Working memory ımprovement after transcranial direct current stimulation paired with working memory training ın diabetic peripheral neuropathy

    Association of cognitive deficits and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is frequent. Working memory (WM) deficits result in impairment of daily activities, diminished functionality, and treatment compliance. Mounting evidence suggests that transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) with concurrent working memory training (WMT) ameliorates cognitive deficits. Emboldening results of tDCS were shown in DPN. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) coupled with cathodal right DLPFC with concurrent WMT in DPN for the first time. The present randomized triple-blind parallel-group sham-controlled study evaluated the efficacy of 5 sessions of tDCS over the DLPFC concurrent with WMT in 28 individuals with painful DPN on cognitive (primary) and pain-related, psychiatric outcome measures before, immediately after, and 1-month after treatment protocol. tDCS enhanced the efficacy of WMT on working memory and yielded lower anxiety levels than sham tDCS but efficacy was not superior to sham on other cognitive domains, pain severity, quality of life, and depression. tDCS with concurrent WMT enhanced WM and ameliorated anxiety in DPN without affecting other cognitive and pain-related outcomes. Further research scrutinizing the short/long-term efficacy with larger samples is accredited
