    HPLC-DAD Analysis and Versatile Bioactivities of Turkish Sunflower Honeys Using Chemometric Approaches

    Sunflower honey (SH) is bright yellow, fragrant, pollen-flavoured, slightly herbaceous and has a unique taste. The present research aims to examine the enzyme inhibitory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-quorum sensing activities and phenolic compositions of 30 sunflower honeys (SHs) produced from several regions of Turkey with chemometric study. SAH from Samsun exhibited the best antioxidant activity in β-carotene linoleic acid (IC50: 7.33±0.17 mg/mL) and CUPRAC (A0.50: 4.94±0.13 mg/mL) assays, anti-urease activity (60.63±0.87 %) and anti-inflammatory activity against COX-1 (73.94±1.08 %) and COX-2 (44.96±0.85 %). SHs exhibited mild antimicrobial activity against the test microorganisms while they showed high quorum sensing inhibition zones measured in the range of 42–52 mm against the CV026 strain. The phenolic composition was determined by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) system and levulinic, gallic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic and p-coumaric acids were identified in all studied SHs. The classification of SHs was performed the using PCA and HCA. This study revealed that phenolic compounds and biological properties are effective in classification of SHs according to their geographical origin. The results suggest that studied SHs could be valued as potential agents with versatile bioactivities in oxidative stress-related disease, microbial infections, inflammation, melanoma, and peptic ulcer

    Effect of the Educational Intervention on the Balance of Diabetic Foot Amputees: A Randomized Controlled Study

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational intervention on the balance of diabetic foot amputees. There were 2 groups and 60 patients (30 in each group) in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups using block randomization to provide equal distribution of the minor and major amputations in groups. An education program was prepared in line with Bandura's Social Cognitive Learning theory. Education was administered to the intervention group before the amputation. Three days after the education, the patients’ balance was examined using Berg Balance Scale (BBS). There were not any statistically significant differences between the groups regarding the sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics except for marital status (P =.038). The mean BBS scores were 31.4 ± 17.6 for the intervention group and 20.3 ± 17.8 for the control group. We demonstrated that the intervention lowered fall risk after minor (P =.045) but not major amputation (P =.067). We recommend using education for the patients who will undergo amputation and further studies in larger and different populations

    The art and science of reading fluency and fluency instruction

    Although often neglected and misunderstood, reading fluency has been identified as a critical competency for proficient reading. In this essay we define fluency, present its uneven history, identify and describe effective methods of instruction and assessment, and explore future questions that scholarly inquiry might address as well as future opportunities for fluency to improve literacy outcomes. A fuller understanding of reading fluency and its importance has the potential for making significant improvements in literacy outcomes for students learning to read English and other world languages

    Pshychological Resilience and Percieved Stress Level in Nurses: Experience of Nurses in Turkey

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of psychological resilience levels of nurses on perceived stress levels in this study. METHODS: The research was carried out with 153 nurses. Socio-demographic Questionnaire, The Brief Resilience Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale were used as data collection tools. RESULTS: The nurses' total Brief Resilience Scale score average was 17.72 ± 4.48, and the total Perceived Stress Scale score average was 31.74 ± 7.18. There was a negative and moderately significant relationship between the resilience and stress level of the nurses. During the pandemic process, the level of stress that nurses perceive increases as their psychological resilience decreases. CONCLUSION: Psychological resilience and coping with stress are traits that can be improved. It is important to establish strategies to increase the resilience of nurses and improve their ability to cope effectively with stress

    Chemical characterization, in vitro antioxidant, anti-cancer and enzyme inhibition activities of three edible mushroom species

    This study aimed to investigate HPLC-DAD based chemical compositions, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and anti-cancer activities of three edible mushrooms: Clavariadelphus truncatus Donk, Craterellus tubaeformis (Fr.) Quél. and Hygrophorus pudorinus (Fr.) Fr. p-Hydroxy benzoic acid was specified as the main compound in C. truncatus methanol extract (67.40 ± 0.18 µg/g), trans-aconitic acid in C. tubaeformis water extract (129.50 ± 0.11 µg/g), fumaric acid in other mushroom extracts (138.80 ± 0.25–203.40 ± 0.36 µg/g). C. truncatus methanol extract (DPPH•: IC50: 133.99 ± 0.30 µg/mL; ABTS•+: IC50: 120.95 ± 0.93 µg/mL; CUPRAC: A0.50: 108.10 ± 0.42 µg/mL; PRAP: A0.50: 116.81 ± 1.18 µg/mL; metal chelating: IC50: 143.18 ± 0.22 µg/mL) was the most active in antioxidant activity with the highest level of total phenolic compounds (29.18 ± 0.70 µg GAEs/mg extract). When C. tubaeformis water extract (42.13 ± 0.51%) was the highest active in AChE inhibition activity, C. tubaeformis hexane extract (29.14 ± 0.04%) was the highest active in BChE inhibition activity at 200 µg/mL. All hexane extracts displayed the high inhibition on α-amylase (47.82 ± 1.16–81.06 ± 0.54% inhibition at 0.50 mg/mL) and α-glucosidase (IC50: 0.11 ± 0.01–0.13 ± 0.02 mg/mL). C. truncatus water (IC50: 36.19 ± 0.95 µg/mL) and C. tubaeformis methanol (IC50: 48.26 ± 0.51 µg/mL) extracts indicated the highest anti-cancer activity on HT-29. Also, C. tubaeformis methanol extract (IC50: 68.93 ± 0.87 µg/mL) was also found to be best anti-cancer active in HeLa. Also, the significant correlation was observed between the chemical compounds and bioactivities. This research affords a scientific basis for the exploration of novel and natural antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and anti-cancer sources with the chemical contents. All studied mushrooms could be used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications

    Push and Pull Factors of Why Medical Students Want to Leave Türkiye: A Countrywide Multicenter Study

    Phenomenon: Physician immigration from other countries is increasing as developed countries continue to be desirable destinations for physicians; however, the determinants of Turkish physicians’ migration decisions are still unclear. Despite its wide coverage in the media and among physicians in Türkiye, and being the subject of much debate, there is insufficient data to justify this attention. With this study, we aimed to investigate the tendency of senior medical students in Türkiye to pursue their professional careers abroad and its related factors. Approach: This cross-sectional study involved 9881 senior medical students from 39 different medical schools in Türkiye in 2022. Besides participants’ migration decision, we evaluated the push and pull factors related to working, social environment and lifestyle in Türkiye and abroad, medical school education inadequacy, and personal insufficiencies, as well as the socioeconomic variables that may affect the decision to migrate abroad. The analyses were carried out with a participation rate of at least 50%. Findings: Of the medical students, 70.7% had emigration intentions. Approximately 60% of those want to stay abroad permanently, and 61.5% of them took initiatives such as learning a foreign language abroad (54.5%) and taking relevant exams (18.9%). Those who wanted to work in the field of Research & Development were 1.37 (95% CI: 1.22–1.54) times more likely to emigrate. The push factor that was related to emigration intention was the “working conditions in the country” (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.56–2.28) whereas the “social environment/lifestyle abroad” was the mere pull factor for the tendency of emigration (OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.45–2.06). In addition, the quality problem in medical schools also had a significant impact on students’ decisions (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.83–2.65). Insights: Although the percentage of those who want to emigrate “definitely” was at the same level as in the other developing countries, the tendency to migrate “permanently” was higher in Türkiye. Improving working conditions in the country and increasing the quality of medical faculties seem vital in preventing the migration of physician

    A configurational approach for analyzing cultural values and performance in Global Virtual Teams

    Although there have been decades of research on the effect of cultural values on team effectiveness outcomes, knowledge of the interdependencies of team cultural values for explaining team performance remains nascent. Using a configurational qualitative approach, this study explores how cultural values combine and collectively contribute to the effectiveness of Global Virtual Teams (GVTs). We perform a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on a data set of 1847 individuals nested within 396 GVTs who participated in an international business consulting project. The results demonstrate that cultural values work together to achieve high levels of team performance rather than function independently. The results also show that different cultural value configurations could be equally effective at producing the same outcome, and that the presence of gender egalitarianism and the absence of power distance are the most important for producing the outcome. We discuss implications for practice and future research

    THE POTENTIAL FOR USING DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES IN GREEN ROOFS

    This research was carried out in Izmir-Turkiye and investigated the potential of using three different substrates (cocopeat, loofah and perlite) in the design of green roofs with succulents (Crassula ovata) in aim to improve their performance. In this research, four different groups (G1: Soil-Cocopeat, G2: Soil-Loofah, G3: Soil-Perlite and G4: Soil) were created according to the plant growing media used in the planting layer. The researchers conducted measurements of the drained irrigation water’s EC (Electrical Conductivity) value, pH value and drainage amount, the plant growing media’s temperature and moisture, the plant’s height and leaf number, and the amount of subsidence in the planting layer. In line with the results obtained from the evaluations of the analyses, it is possible to say that perlite (G3) offers more advantages than its alternatives in terms of many variables. However, according to the conclusive results, it has been understood that the use of a single type of substrate as plant growing media would not be sufficient to encourage the maximum performance of green roofs. To ensure that, considering the advantages of each substrate group, it is proposed that their combined use would be more beneficial
