Nitric oxide improves the germination of wheat seeds exposed to salinity via modulating sugar and proline metabolism
There is a large body of evidence showing the positive effect of nitric oxide (NO) on the growth of plants subjected to abiotic stress but less is known regarding the physiological responses of NO-treated seeds to harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine NO-mediated physiological alterations in germinating bread wheat seeds under salinity. In this regard, NaCl-exposed wheat seeds were germinated in petri plates containing various concentrations of sodium nitroprusside dehydrate (SNP, 25 to 500 µM) for 7 days. Different chemicals, such as potassium ferrocyanide, potassium cyanide, and carboxy-PTIO potassium salt were also used to confirm NO action on germination. Finally, physiological parameters associated with reserve mobilization, oxidative and antioxidative status, and osmoregulation were assayed in wheat seeds treated with NaCl and/or SNP for 2 days. The results showed that 250 µM SNP supplementation significantly improved the germination of wheat seeds exposed to 405 mM NaCl. It was verified that the stimulating effect of SNP on seed germination was not related to molecules (e.g., cyanide and iron) other than NO. In addition, SNP treatment markedly enhanced the activity of alpha-amylase, resulting in an increment in the reducing sugar content of wheat seeds subjected to salt stress. Moreover, 250 µM SNP led to a considerable increase in the proline accumulation in seeds under both control and excess salt conditions (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the current work provides evidence that NO can improve salinity-induced germination inhibition in wheat seeds by regulating sugar and proline metabolism
Fabrication and Characterization of a Multifunctional Coating to Promote the Osteogenic Properties of Orthopedic Implants
Titanium-based alloys are used in orthopedic applications as fixation elements, hard tissue replacements in artificial bones, and dental implants. Despite their wide range of applications, metallic implant defects and failures arise due to inadequate mechanical bonding, postoperative clotting problems, aseptic loosening, and infections. To improve the surface bioactivity and reduce the corrosion rate of the Ti6Al4V alloy, multi-layered coatings (HAp, BG, Cs, and Hep) were applied via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). XRD images showed the presence of HAp within the coating. In vitro investigation: cell line NIH-3T3 fibroblasts were seeded on the non-coated and coated Ti6Al4V substrates, and their cellular behavior was evaluated. The results indicated that the HApBGCsHep coating could enhance the adhesion and proliferation of NIH 3T3 cells. In addition, the potentiodynamic polarization results are compatible with the in vitro outcome
Investigation of parameters related to lower extremity muscle strength and proprioception in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: a cross-sectional study
Background: Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) may experience a decline in balance, gait, and mobility as well as an increase in fear of falling (FoF) and fatigue due to weaker muscles and proprioceptive loss in their lower limbs. The study aimed to compare lower extremity muscle strength and proprioception, balance, functional mobility, gait, FoF, and fatigue between PwMS and healthy controls and to investigate the relationship between lower extremity muscle strength and proprioception and balance, functional mobility, gait, FoF, and fatigue in PwMS. Methods: The study was completed with 35 PwMS and 35 healthy controls with matching age and gender. The 5 Repetition Sit-to Stand Test (5-STS-test), knee and ankle reposition tests (using a digital inclinometer), the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), the Falls Efficacy-International (FES-I), and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) were used for evaluations. Results: The 5-STS test, knee and ankle reposition tests, TUG, FES-I, and FSS Test scores were higher and BBS and DGI scores were lower in PwMS compared to healthy controls (p < 0.05). BBS, DGI, TUG, FES-I, and FSS were associated with 5-STS test and knee and ankle reposition tests except for some nondominant reposition tests in PwMS (r between 0.342 and -0.714; p < 0.05 for all). Conclusion: Lower extremity muscle strength and proprioception were associated with balance, functional mobility, gait, FoF, and fatigue in PwMS. These results suggested that detailed assessment of neuromuscular parameters in lower extremity function is important in determining the appropriate rehabilitation programs

Contributions to the Dolichopodidae (Insecta: Diptera) Fauna of Mu?la Provinces with the Six New Records for Turkey
In this study, we report the Turkey fauna of long-legged flies and new records of six species (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) collected from Mugla province during the 2018-2019 field trips. These newly recorded species are Acropsilus niger (Loew, 1869), Hercostomus kravchenkoi (Grichanov and Freidberg, 2018), Sybistroma leptocerca (Stackelberg, 1949), Oncopygius magnificus (Loew, 1873), Medetera glaucella (Kowarz, 1877), and Syntormon submonilis (Negrobov, 1975). In total, 107 species from 10 subfamilies and 35 genera of Dolichopodidae are known from Mugla. With these records, the number of the Turkey Dolichopodidae species has reached 224
An analysis of Dalaman International Airport’s (LTBS) noise prediction model and assessment of its noise impact
Purpose: In this context, this study aims to obtain information about the noise levels emitted to the environment by modeling the noise map of Dalaman Airport and correlating these noise values according to the Environmental Noise Directive (END) and World Health Organization (WHO) limits. Design/methodology/approach: Dalaman Airport Aeronautical Information Publication and 2022 flight data from the airport were analyzed. The noise levels exposed to schools and health institutions were determined using the Cnossos–Eu calculation method. Findings: Maximum noise levels were obtained as Lden 92.29 dB(A), Lday 85.24 dB(A), Levening 89.00 dB(A) and Lnight 85.23 dB(A) according to the noise indicators. Limit values recommended by the END and WHO according to noise indicator types and measurement results were correlated and evaluated. Originality/value: In the noise modeling of Dalaman Airport, there has previously been no evaluation of the noise limits recommended according to END or WHO in the literature
Development of environment-friendly magnetic nanobiocomposites and full factorial design (FFD) analysis for strontium removal from aqueous solutions
In this study, magnetic (Fe3O4) nanobiocomposite were synthesized by a co-precipitation method using pectin biopolymer as a stabilizer. Nanobiocomposites were characterized via several characterization methods. The particle size and surface area of the nanobiocomposite were found as 5.76 nm 94.651 m2/g, respectively. The TEM and SEM results indicated that the spherical nanoparticles were well dispersed into the polymer matrix. Optimal adsorption parameters were determined using FFD. It was determined that pH and initial concentration are the main effects on the Sr(II) removal. Maximum sorption capacities according to D–R and Langmuir isotherms were determined as 0.018 mol/g and 26.455 mg/g, respectively
Energy and exergy analyses of a coal-fired micro-CHP system coupled engine as a domestic solution
In this study, a coal-fired stoker boiler and a beta-type rhombic-drive Stirling engine were manufactured and tested. The performance of the coal boiler with a Stirling engine has been investigated experimentally for the heating system of a three-storey house. The aims of this study are to investigate the Stirling engine's electricity generation potential and thermal energy production. Also, energy and exergy analyses of the micro-CHP system were performed to evaluate thermodynamic performance. Measurements were taken at 10-min intervals for three months. Thus, the temperature values, thermal power, thermal performance, efficiency, energy rates, exergy rates, and electrical parameters of the micro-CHP system can be monitored. The heating demand of the building was covered totally by the micro-CHP system, and the thermal power of the stoker boiler was reduced by approximately 1.29 kW due to the integration of the Stirling engine. The daily total of 2.6 kWh of electricity was generated with the Stirling engine and stored in the battery, and the rest of the electrical energy demand was taken from the grid. If the heating system is supported by PV, it can be operated off-grid. This study will provide insight into the usage of micro-CHP systems in residential applications
Estimation of Right-censored SETAR-type Nonlinear Time-series Model
This paper focuses on estimating the Self-Exciting Threshold Autoregressive (SETAR) type time-series model under right-censored data. As is known, the SETAR model is used when the underlying function of the relation-ship between the time-series itself (Yt), and its p delays violates the lin-earity assumption and this function is formed by multiple behaviors that called regime. This paper addresses the right-censored dependent time-series problem which has a serious negative effect on the estimation performance. Right-censored time series cause biased coefficient estimates and unqualified predictions. The main contribution of this paper is solving the censorship problem for the SETAR by three different techniques that are kNN imputation which represents the imputation techniques, Kaplan-Meier weights that is applied based on the weighted least squares, synthetic data transformation which adds the effect of censorship to the modeling process by manipulating dataset. Then, these solutions are combined by the SETAR-type model estimation process. To observe the behavior of the nonlinear estimators in practice, a simulation study and a real data example are carried out. The Covid-19 dataset collected in China is used as real data. Results prove that although the three estimators show satisfying performance, the quality of the estimate SETAR model based on the kNN imputation technique dominates the other two estimators
