Bree Sutherland Interview, February 1, 2025
Bree Sutherland (she/they) discusses her choice as a transgender electrician in Missoula, Montana to move to Portland, Oregon with her wife Charlotte Macorn, in search of a more queer-friendly environment. Sutherland describes her experiences in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality classes at the University of Montana, her role in the formation of the Gender Expansion Project, and overall involvement in activism. Sutherland shares how this work opened new opportunities for self-exploration in terms of understanding her own identity as a fluid dynamic rather than static label. Couple Lonnie Johnson and Ronald Fournier detail their lives in different cities around Montana, including Columbia Falls, Helena, Butte, and Hamilton. The couple take turns explaining their origins, highlighting they have been a couple for over thirty years. They describe living comfortably in Montana when they came out in the 1980s and 1990s, and share how the culture in Montana noticeably changed during the 2016 United States presidential election, ultimately inspiring their move to Washington. They describe their experiences within healthcare as an openly out couple, specifically in Montana Community Health Clinic and Chas Health.
