“Scientific Theory of Exercise Prescription” 
 This course introduces the fundamentals of aerobic exercise and resistance training related to health, fitness and 
performance. Subject matter includes, foundational understanding of physical training and the designing of exercise 
programs for health, fitness and performance, in healthy individuals during all stages of life. Topics include: 1) 
Fundamentals of exercise physiology underlying aerobic and resistance training for health, fitness and performance, 2) 
Theory of aerobic and resistance training programs, 3) Methodology of aerobic and resistance training, 4) Evaluating and 
monitoring of fitness and 5) The fundamental design of programs for health, weight loss, fitness and performance. 
 This course provides a practical foundation for students to design personal fitness programs, understand and 
design programs for lifetime fitness and to develop foundational training theory for future exercise professionals.  In 
addition, this course, when combined with “Exercise Physiology” and “Exercise, Aging and Chronic Disease” classes, 
provides students with the ability to understand the practical aspects of exercise physiology as applied across the spectrum 
of health, fitness and competitive performance. 
 
Instructor’s Goals/Course Objectives: “Lifelong Skills” 
1. Gain an understanding of the rationale of lifetime physical activity in order to promote health & energy balance. 
2. Grasp the fundamentals of exercise physiology and human anatomy as it applies to physical activity. 
3. To use a science-based exercise prescription and apply the principles towards exercise prescriptions. 
4. To understand basic approaches to analyze personal fitness goals, assess current physical capacities via field test 
approaches, and to implement findings into an integrated exercise training programs for health, fitness or weight

Quizzes: Quizzes will be of the pop variety. If you do not show up to class, you will not get quiz points. Students will have their 
lowest quiz score dropped from the calculation. No make-up quizzes.   
 
Exams: There are four, 40-point exams. The fourth exam is the final (Dec 10th). Exams are not cumulative. No make-up exams.   
 
Labs: There will be six, 10-point labs reports. You must attend a lab in order to turn in a lab report. Unless otherwise directed, meet 
in McGill Hall, room 131. There is a separate lab syllabus you should consult for specific lab questions. Show up dressed for a physical 
activity. Inform your instructor and the Lab TAs in advance if you have a medical issue that prevents you from performing physical 
activity. No make-up labs.   
 
Programming Project: A 3-part program deign project where students build a fitness program that aligns with recommendations 
for cardiovascular and resistance training principles. Each phase of the project is worth 10-points. Further details to come in 
November. Each phase will have a unique due date.

1. Academic Penalty(ies) by the Course Instructor: The student may receive a failing or 
reduced grade in an academic exercise, examination, or course, and/or be assigned additional work which may 
include re-examination.  
 
2. University Sanction(s): The University may also impose a sanction that exceeds the academic penalty:  
a.  Disciplinary Warning 
b.  Disciplinary Probation 
c.  Suspension 
d.  Expulsion 
e.  Denial of a Degree 
f.  Revocation of a Degree 
 
 
Required Course Materials: 
There is not a required textbook for this course. The course is generated from Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, 8th edition – 
Heyward and Gibson, and the purchase of this book is entirely optional. Students will be required to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel in the 
course. Office 360 is to students for free from UM’s IT Central.   
 
Attendance: 
Attendance is not mandatory, and attendance is not directly taken or scored in the class. However, quiz points are only accessible to students who 
show up to the lecture. If a student misses a lecture when a quiz is given, no make-up quiz will be available to the student. 
 
Cultural Leave Policy: 
UM has a Cultural and Ceremonial Leave Policy: "Cultural or ceremonial leave allows excused absences for cultural, religious, and ceremonial purposes 
to meet the student's customs and traditions or to participate in related activities. To receive an authorized absence for a cultural, religious or 
ceremonial event the student or their advisor (proxy) must submit a formal written request to the instructor. This must include a brief description 
(with inclusive dates) of the cultural event or ceremony and the importance of the student's attendance or participation. Authorization for the 
absence is subject to approval by the instructor. Appeals may be made to the Chair, Dean or Provost. The excused absence or leave may not exceed 
five academic calendar days (not including weekends or holidays). Students remain responsible for completion or make-up of assignments as defined

USE OF LARGE-LANGUAGE MODEL SOFTWARE, COMPUTER-GENERATED TEXT, CHATBOTS, AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE 
PLATFORMS: 
Recent advances in technology, including platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Bard, Grammarly, and others, have dramatically 
changed the landscape of education. Learning how and when it is appropriate to utilize these technologies is important for all students, 
to ensure intellectual honesty. Students must obtain permission from the instructor prior to utilizing any AI or Language processing 
chatbot (including ChatGPT or similar products) for any assignment or written work. If the instructor grants permission to utilize AI 
generated materials, the student must provide the following: 
- A statement at the end of the paper acknowledging the software program utilized to generate text. 
- Any text generated by AI or a similar program, and used in the assignment, should be quoted and cited. 
- Any information used to generate the text should be appropriately cited in-text and included in the reference list. 
Using any AI tool, software, or program to generate content without proper attribution and disclosure qualifies as academic 
misconduct, and would be grounds for discipline.

Hours required: 1 credit = 45 hours; 2 credits = 90 hours; 3 credits = 135 hours; 4 credits = 180 hours.  If you 
believe you will have difficulty fulfilling the required work hours contact Holly immediately.  Students who do 
not complete the required hours without making special arrangements with Holly will receive a failing grade. 
 
Reporting: Log your hours and journal notes each day you work in your internship Hours and Journal Logs. A 
final portfolio is due at the end of the semester. See details below. 
 
 
Portfolio Guidelines and Important Dates 
 
Tuesday, January 21     Begin internship Journal and track internship hours using the Weekly Log  
 
Wednesday, April 30     *Submit your Final Portfolio to Holly Cummings, McGill Hall 106, by 4 pm. Please 
use the drop box by my door. (Should you complete your internship early, you may 
submit your portfolio before the stated deadline.) 
 
 
 
Final Internship Portfolio: Four Parts 
 
 
This report should be double-spaced, with 1” margins, and in Times New Roman 12 pt font. The page values 
below are for reference. Quality should prevail over Quantity but aim for the stated page length. 
 
Submit your portfolio in a bound folder, or small 3-ring binder. This is a professional report and should be a 
wonderful end to your internship. Be proud of what you have accomplished. 
 
Part 1: Learning Objectives/Goals (1-2 pages) Now that you have completed your internship, review your 
Learning Objectives. Did you complete them? What have you gained by completing these objectives that you 
can apply to your future career? How have you impacted your organization by completing these objectives? Be 
sure to include any material you created along the way in the Appendices section of this portfolio. 
 
 
Part 2: Literature Review (1-2 pages). Pick a piece of peer-reviewed literature/journal (or if pre-approved by 
Holly, another non-fiction resource) related to your internship experience and future work. Include the 
following:

aspect was missing? 
b) What did the agency do well, and what could the agency do to improve future internships? 
c) What did IPAT/CHTH/UMT do well, and what could IPAT/CHTH/UMT do to improve internship 
experiences? 
 
 
Part 4: Appendices  
a) Weekly journal & hour logs signed by your supervisor.  
b) Provide supporting material from your internship, including items created for your agency or business 
such as newsletters, flyers, charting, record keeping, training/dietary logs, samples of work, etc.

Class Times & Location 
This class is an online learning course that is structured in a weekly format. Students are expected to 
engage with the course throughout the week by posting on discussion boards, reading the text, posting 
speeches, submitting assignments, etc. Be sure to be checking Canvas and your student email regularly 
to remain on top of your coursework.  
Course Information 
Course Description & Objectives 
This online learning course will acquaint you with the basics of public speaking. The course is designed 
to be completed entirely online. The course is divided into weeks, with two class meetings a week. Each 
week we will unpack aspects of public speaking and explore different speech assignments. Each week 
will “open” on Monday at 6am on Canvas.  
Student Learning Outcomes 
The course is designed to help students meet a set of learning objectives. If you work hard and take the 
course seriously… 
1. You will understand the elements of the communication process.  
This will be demonstrated through discussion and peer feedback. 
2. You will understand the components of effective speech delivery. 
This will be demonstrated by speech performances, outside speaker evaluation and feedback on 
speeches. 
3. You will improve your listening skills and your ability to offer constructive feedback to others. 
This will be demonstrated by feedback on speeches and the outside speaker assignment. 
4. You will learn how to conduct basic college-level research on contemporary public issues and 
incorporate that research in public discourse.  
This will be demonstrated by a library workshop day and the construction of speech outlines for your 
informative and persuasive speeches. 
5. You will be able to craft public speeches that: have a clear purpose, state a cogent central idea, are 
well-organized, and are adapted appropriately to the audience and the situation. 
This will be developed throughout all of the work you do for this class, and ultimately demonstrated 
by your speech performances.

Course Expectations & Policies 
1. Respect your instructor and your colleagues. This encompasses all of the following items. It is 
absolutely necessary for a positive educational experience. Whether it is navigating the course, behaving 
ethically toward your instructor and classmates, or contributing to a positive online classroom climate, 
please act respectfully. 
 
2. Complete your reading assignments and activities in the textbook. Students who fail to keep up with 
reading will perform poorly in the class and have problems with speeches. 
 
3. Give your speeches and turn in assignments on time. Late assignments will be penalized. Specific 
guidelines for speech performances are addressed below. Students who do not complete all three major 
speaking assignments will not receive a passing grade for the course regardless of other points earned. 
 
4. Do your own work. Plagiarism and academic dishonesty will result in penalties ranging from failure of 
the assignment to expulsion from the College. This topic is addressed below and will be discussed in 
class. 
 
Attendance Policy 
Plan to engage with the course regularly. Students who do not check in with the course at least several 
times throughout the week, will struggle to succeed.  
Course Workload 
Expect at least eight hours of work per week for completion of projects and assignments, this amount of 
time will increase on weeks that speeches are due.  
Academic Misconduct and the Student Conduct Code 
The Student Conduct Code at the University of Montana embodies and promotes honesty, integrity, 
accountability, rights, and responsibilities associated with constructive citizenship in our academic 
community. This Code describes expected standards of behavior for all students, including academic 
conduct and general conduct, and it outlines students' rights, responsibilities, and the campus processes 
for adjudicating alleged violations.

Cultural Leave Policy 
Cultural or ceremonial leave allows excused absences for cultural, religious, and ceremonial purposes to 
meet the student's customs and traditions or to participate in related activities. To receive an authorized 
absence for a cultural, religious or ceremonial event the student or their advisor (proxy) must submit a 
formal written request to the instructor. This must include a brief description (with inclusive dates) of 
the cultural event or ceremony and the importance of the student's attendance or participation. 
Authorization for the absence is subject to approval by the instructor. Appeals may be made to the 
Chair, Dean or Provost. The excused absence or leave may not exceed five academic calendar days (not 
including weekends or holidays). Students remain responsible for completion or make-up of 
assignments as defined in the syllabus, at the discretion of the instructor. 
Food & Housing Insecurity 
Any student who faces challenges securing food or housing, and believes that this could affect their 
performance in this course, is urged to contact any or all of the following campuses resources. 
Food Pantry Program 
UM offers a food pantry that students can access for emergency food. The pantry is open on Tuesdays 
from 12 to 5 PM and Fridays from 10 AM to 5 PM. The pantry is located in UC 119 (in the former ASUM 
Childcare offices). Pantry staff operate several satellite food cupboards on campus (including one at 
Missoula College). For more information about this program, email umpantry@mso.umt.edu, visit the

ASUM Renter Center 
The Renter Center has compiled a list of resources (https://medium.com/griz-renter-blog) for UM 
students at risk of homelessness or food insecurity. Students can schedule an appointment with Renter 
Center staff to discuss their situation and receive information, support, and referrals. 
TRiO Student Support Services 
TRiO serves UM students who are low-income, first-generation college students or have documented 
disabilities. TRiO services include a textbook loan program, scholarships and financial aid help, academic 
advising, coaching, and tutoring. 
  
Students can check their eligibility (www.umt.edu/triosss/apply.php) for TRiO services online. If you are 
comfortable, please come see members of the teaching team. We will do our best to help connect you 
with additional resources. 
The Writing and Public Speaking Center 
The Writing and Public Speaking Center provides a collaborative learning environment for all members 
of the University of Montana community. Professional tutors support undergraduates, graduate 
students, alumni, faculty, and staff working on a wide variety of academic, professional, and creative 
writing tasks. 
Online and in-person appointments are available six days a week. Same-day appointments are often 
available! 
The Math Learning Center 
The Math Learning Center has in-person, drop-in tutoring to help students with homework and test 
preparation needs. Check their website for drop-in hours and location.  
UM Information Technology 
Get the technology, tools, and services you need. Visit the UM IT webpage for services and self-help 
articles, or contact the help desk directly by calling 406.243.HELP (4357) or emailing 
ithelpdesk@umontana.edu. The Help Desk is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM Mountain 
Time (excluding University holidays). 
Supporting Mental Well-Being of Students at UM 
At UM, we value every student’s wellbeing and believe that taking care of yourself is imperative to your 
success as a student. College students often experience issues that may interfere with academic success 
such as academic stress, sleep problems, juggling responsibilities, life events, relationship concerns, or 
feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, or depression. If you or a friend is struggling, we strongly encourage 
seeking support. Helpful, effective resources are available on campus.
