Academia During the Pandemic: The Limits of Empathy and Compassion
Get PDFThis piece gives a first-person account of what it has been like teaching as an adjunct in NYC during the pandemic. It explores the myriad challenges of working as contingent faculty, and how inequities like low pay and little or no access to employer-based healthcare have been amplified by COVID-19. It also touches upon how policies and procedures put in place to grant accommodations for online teaching have the potential to set a dangerous precedent vis-à-vis employee privacy, opening the door to discriminatory hiring practices that could be justified by our current crisis, disguised as a concern for public health. The essay concludes by considering the costs of continuing to undervalue contingent faculty as a cost-saving measure, and how such practices could lead to a shortage in qualified instructors in the future

Perspectives from Female Athletic Trainers in Men\u27s Professional Sports: How Their Athletic Training Programs Set Them Up for Success
Get PDFFemale athletic trainers working in male professional sports are represented at a number strongly disproportionate to the number of female athletic trainers making up the profession. This research study works to focus on how athletic training education programs (ATP) have successfully set up the female athletic trainers who have made it to professional sports. The goal was to focus on what these education programs were doing to set their students apart from other athletic training programs. Three female athletic trainers currently working in male professional sports were interviewed for this qualitative research study by utilizing semi-structured interviewing. The data was then coded using In Vivo coding, concept coding, and sub coding. Combining these techniques allowed the researcher to best analyze the data for common themes among the participant\u27s responses. The paper will discuss these themes in greater detail towards the end of the paper, arguing there are specific things athletic training education programs can do to help propel their students to the professional leagues. Areas of future need and focus were described as well throughout the course of the study

An Acoustic Phonetic Investigation of the Similarities and Differences Between Northern and Central Minnesota English
Get PDFNorthern Minnesota English is a dialect that is suspected to be perceptually different from other Minnesota dialects (Bartholdi 2015). The current study seeks to investigate whether there is any acoustic phonetic evidence to prove and/or disprove these impressionistic claims. To do this, acoustic data was collected from twenty participants from Northern Minnesota who uttered 11 different English vowels ([i, ɪ, e, ɛ, æ, ɑ, ɔ, o, ʊ, u, ʌ]). Those utterances were then compared and contrasted with vowel sounds uttered by 32 Central Minnesota English speakers, which were originally collected by Koffi (2013). The findings from this study confirm the impressionistic claims which state that Northern Minnesota English speakers sound slightly different from other Minnesotans, specifically Central Minnesota English speakers. However, these two dialects are not completely different. Despite some perceptible distinctions, both dialects still manifest the same phonological patterns: merged [ɑ] and [ɔ] vowels, raising [ɪ] above [e], and fronting and lowering [ʊ]
School Resource Officers and Special Education Roles, Presence and Training
Get PDFA number of theoretical and applied outcomes may emerge from the findings of this paper. First, better specialized training for SROs when engaging with students with disabilities may be developed. Second, school personnel may understand the efficacy of SROs when student behaviors escalate. Third, ways for improving the actions of SROs during severe behavioral episodes may be identified. Finally, positive behavioral interventions for SROs may be identified.
I work closely with SROs in our building, and they have brought up concerns about when to intervene, specifically with students who are diagnosed with ASD who are non-verbal. Additional training for all officers would be very beneficial. Specialized training in mental illness and with behavioral disorders may benefit the officers when they perform duties in the broader community
