    The Effectiveness of Trauma-Informed Practices and Resilience for Students Impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences

    In 1998, a groundbreaking medical research study was published that created widespread interest in what researchers were calling adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Felitti et al.’s (1998) research highlighted the prevalence of adverse incidents and the correlation with future health morbidity. The study established that more than 50% of adults in the study experienced at least one traumatic event during childhood, allowing the research to become a powerful tool to identify and intervene with children. It became apparent that the effects of traumatic events in the lives of children had a huge impact on biological, physiological, and psychological development. An evolution had begun and the impact on learning and resilience was becoming an important consideration for the educational community

    This unit introduces ESL and EFL students to the ongoing struggle between the Indigenous people of the Unites States and the United States federal government with reference to the events of the Nez Perce War of 1877 and the leader of the Nez Perce, Chief Joseph. The unit is aimed at young adult and adult learners at the B2 level with 93% of the vocabulary included in the first 1000 most used English words. Exercises use contemporary readings as well as archival material to cover vocabulary topics such as long definitions as well as structural elements such as finding the main idea. Grammar topics include the use of transitive and intransitive verbs. The unit also expands a student’s appreciation for the complex relationship that Indigenous people have with the federal government both historically and today

    The Effects of Sodium Bicarbonate on Type One Diabetes Development in Two Mouse Models

    Type one diabetes (T1D) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease in which T cells coordinate and carry out an attack on insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Currently, the only treatment for T1D is life-long insulin injections, which cause great financial burden for T1D patients and their families. Thus, it is crucial to explore cheaper preventative and treatment options. Previous studies have shown that sodium bicarbonate (SB), an alkalinizing agent that is typically used to treat indigestion, has the potential to reduce inflammation through its action on macrophages. Thus, it was hypothesized that SB administration would decrease the incidence and severity of T1D by its action on T cells in two mouse models, chemically (streptozotocin; STZ)-induced T1D in C57BL/6J mice (STZ-B6 model) and spontaneously-developing T1D in NOD/LtJ (NOD) mice. Seven-week-old B6 and nine-week-old NOD mice were administered low-dose SB (20 mM) or high-dose SB (200 mM) via drinking water until the experimental endpoints when B6 mice were 12-weeks-old and NOD mice were 12-weeks or 24-weeks-old. At eight weeks of age, T1D was induced by STZ injections in B6 mice. Blood glucose and body weight measurements were taken biweekly, in STZ-B6 groups, and weekly, in NOD groups for the same duration as SB treatment administration. At experimental endpoints, mice were euthanized, and the effects of SB on T cells were observed, by investigating the T cell proliferation (splenocytes culture with an addition of a T cell mitogen), T cell immunophenotypes (flow cytometry), and pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines (flow cytometry). High dose SB significantly decreased T1D incidence in STZ-B6 mice and glycemia levels in NOD mice at the early timepoint. A low-dose SB treatment, while exhibiting trends, did not significantly decrease the development and glycemia levels in both murine T1D models. Both high- and low-dose SB did not have prominent effects on T cell proliferation, composition, or cytokines, besides the trends in lowering proliferation and proinflammatory cytokines at the experimental endpoints. Overall, our results, while promising, do not support SB as a major player in preventative efforts in the fight against T1D, highlighting the need for further research in this area

    The Preschool Life Skills curriculum has been used to teach functional communication, instruction following, friendship skills, and tolerance to typically developing preschoolers. The purpose of this study is to teach three of the curriculum’s skills - following single-step instructions, following multiple-step instructions, and requesting adult assistance to an eight-year-old public-school student with autism. To plan for generalization, common stimuli from the general education setting were used to teach these skills. Throughout the study, the participant’s performance was assessed during observations in the general education classrooms

    Client Views About Length of Medicated Assisted Therapy for Opioid Use Disorder

    Opioid addiction has been on the rise since 1990, when physicians began administering prescription pain medications. The population has undergone a drastic change from opioid prescriptions such as oxycodone to illicit forms, such as heroin, to aid pain management. Illegal opiates became the alternative drug at a lower cost to fulfill cravings and dependence that prescriptions may no longer feed. With a rise in dependence, pharmaceutical laboratories developed medicated assistant treatments (MAT) to aid in this crisis, more formally known as buprenorphine and methadone. Studies conducted show evidence of a decrease in illicit opioid use when using these medicated treatments and can lead to successful retention of the addiction. The users\u27 experiences are often overlooked in terms of how administration occurs and when the taper of these therapies begins. Anecdotal findings suggest that prescribers continue to prescribe medications with intended harm reduction approaches instead of focusing on abstinence. This study focuses on the history of opioid prescription, addiction, and medical information regarding medication therapy, harm reduction, and the deliverance of why persons administered MAT has been prescribed for an extended amount of time. This study focuses on who is primarily responsible for the length of MAT treatment. Interviews with persons previously or currently prescribed medication-assisted treatment will initiate personal experiences to conclude whether the client or physician controls MAT administration length. Recommendations of participants will be discussed regarding their opinions on the length of treatment

    Very Low Frequency Electrical Impedance Tomography Image Reconstruction System Using FPGA Software-Hardware Co-design

    Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is an imaging technique which is noninvasive and uses the internal conductivity distribution of the object of interest to form a tomographic image. It is performed by applying electrodes to the surface of the object. An alternating current up to frequency 10kHz is applied through a pair of electrodes, and the induced voltage is measured on other electrodes. These current and voltage values are used to reconstruct the internal conductivity distribution. The EIT imaging is increasingly getting used in clinical applications, as it is safer, portable, and low cost if compared with available imaging technologies used in clinical settings. The goal of this project is to develop a low frequency Zynq SoC-based EIT system. A Zynq 7020 device-based development board, Zedboard, interfaced with a customized hardware circuit, is used to develop a complete EIT system. A graphical user interface is developed using C# Graphic User Interface (GUI) application to control the hardware and visualize the results. It is a twelve-electrode system, and current injection and voltage measurement is performed through Zynq SoC. There are two image reconstruction algorithms developed, Gauss Newton One Step and Total variation. The algorithms are implemented in Zynq SoC using software-hardware co-design. The algorithms are also implemented in C#. The image reconstruction performance between the two algorithms is compared. The computation performance between Zynq SoC implementation and C# implementation is also compared to understand the feasibility of FPGA implementation of EIT image reconstruction algorithms

    The Complexities of Developing Meaningful Archaeological Predictive Models: A Case Study from the Dome Analysis Area on the Black Hills National Forest, South Dakota, USA

    This research focuses on an area deemed the Dome Analysis Area (i.e., Dome) in western South Dakota on the Black Hills National Forest. With the aid of geographic information systems (GIS) and statistics, the identification of favorable locations to analyze that may indicate where cultural resources occur will be illustrated through statistically significant associations between the presence or absence of cultural resources and specific environmental variables. The original approach proposed for this research in 2014 intended to build a model for predicting cultural site locations to facilitate land management planning activities more efficiently. In the process of formulating the model, a number of unexpected challenges were encountered that required a shift in focus to instead test for statistically significant associations between the presence or absence of cultural resources and specific environmental variables. The results of this study indicate that the sheer number of potential variables that may factor into site selection decisions can introduce substantial challenges when attempting to analyze those decisions using predictive models
