the last day of the rest of my life - (bene valence)
Critical and emergency care are especially vulnerable to detachment and other patient care challenges that may affect both staff and patient experiences, perspectives and outcomes. This epoch comprises thoughts within an emergency medical experience, and reaches out to care providers and other personnel to consider their self care, their interpersonal relationship with each patient and the system they work within to be attuned to each\u27s historical, personal and environmental traumas
Doctors as Mothers
As a young Pediatric Consultant as well as a mother, I tried to juggle my time between my profession and motherhood, alone, single handed, until one day my circumstances told me I was not doing enough
Healthcare Access, Satisfaction, and Health‑Related Quality of Life Among Children and Adults with Rare Diseases
Background: Research in a variety of countries indicates that healthcare access and health-related quality of life are challenged among people with a variety of rare diseases (RDs). However, there has been little systematic research on the experiences of children and adults with RDs in the American healthcare system that identifies commonalities across RDs. This research aimed to: (1) Describe demographics, disease characteristics, diagnostic experiences, access to healthcare, knowledge about RDs, support from healthcare professionals, and patient satisfaction among people with RDs and their caregivers; (2) examine predictors of patient satisfaction among adults with RDs; (3) compare health-related quality of life and stigma to US population norms; 4) examine predictors of anxiety and depression among adults and children with RDs.
Results: This large-scale survey included (n = 1128) adults with RD or parents or caregivers of children with RDs representing 344 different RDs. About one third of participants waited four or more years for a diagnosis and misdiagnosis was common. A subset of participants reported experiencing insurance-related delays or denials for tests, treatments, specialists, or services. Approximately half of participants felt their medical and social support was sufficient, yet less than a third had sufficient dental and psychological support. Patients were generally neither satisfied or dissatisfied with their healthcare providers. Major predictors of satisfaction were lower stigma, lower anxiety, shorter diagnostic odyssey, greater physical function, and less pain interference. Adults and children with RDs had significantly poorer health-related quality of life and stigma in all domains compared to US norms. Predictors of both anxiety and depression were greater stigma/poor peer relationships, fatigue, sleep disturbance, limited ability to participate in social roles, and unstable disease course.
Conclusions: People in the U.S. with RDs have poor health-related quality of life and high stigma. These factors arerelated to patient satisfaction and healthcare access, including diagnostic delays and misdiagnosis. Advocacy work is needed in order to improve healthcare access and ultimately health-related quality of life for children and adults with RDs
Biogeography of Lizardfishes and their allies (Teleostei: Aulopiformes)
Aulopiformes are a lineage of marine ray-finned fishes with 17 extant families and approximately 250 species. They are distributed worldwide in a variety of marine habitats, from coral reefs to the deep sea. In chapter 1 of this thesis, I will explore the major biogeographic patterns within current biodiversity of the order Aulopiformes. I used GIS software in combination with locality information of museum specimens from the database GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) to create distribution maps of aulopiform biodiversity for every species within each family and subfamily with significant numbers of occurrence data. Each map contains locality information in the form of geographic points for every species of Aulopiformes that was available through GBIF. These maps were then compared to major biogeographic realms based on biodiversity endemicity within the oceans of the world and evaluated significant biogeographic patterns. Overall, Aulopiformes occupy 4 of the 5 major pelagic realms and 27 of 30 of the benthic/coastal realms among the wolrd’s oceans. Aulopiform species that are pelagic for both larval and adult life stages have wider distributions than those who are benthic or coastal in any life stage. Pelagic Aulopiformes also have migrated into cooler oceans toward the North and South Poles while benthic/coastal Aulopiformes typically are restricted to warmer central waters near the equator. In chapter 2, a statistical ancestral area reconstruction analysis was performed in combination with a time-calibrated hypothesis of the evolutionary history of Aulopiformes to further explore aulopiform biogeographic patterns through time. The results of this thesis conclude that aulopiform fishes most likely originated within the Tethys Sea around 140 million years ago. They most likely lived in a warm climate and began migrating to cooler waters around 65 million years ago
Motivating Generation Z: A Study of the unique learning styles of a generation
Motivating Generation Z: A Study of the Unique Learning Styles of a Generation explores what it means to be a student in today\u27s K-12 classroom. The study dives into the research around Gen Z\u27s particular learning styles. Their lives have been uniquely shaped by technology. They\u27re Digital Natives in the truest sense of the title. This study looks at how society and culture have affected those learning styles, and in what ways teachers can present material to meet those needs. They\u27re immersed in technology in a way that changes how they view and interact with the world around them. It\u27s only natural that their education experience would be affected as well. Using a case study format, the study follows John and his experience and interest with three different assignment types, amid the unprecedented COVID distance learning period designed with my research about Gen Z in mind. The findings provide some resolution and open the door for future analysis. Each pedagogical choice created room for an interesting discussion
Cultural Resources Management Plan: Black Mesa Ranger Station
The Black Mesa Ranger Station on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in northern Arizona, serves as the administrative site for the Black Mesa Ranger District. The station was established in 1949 after Forest Service personnel determined that the current ranger station located in Black Canyon was no longer suitable as an administrative site. The Black Mesa Ranger Station was developed over a period of several years spanning from the 1950s to the 1960s to form the administrative site that it is today.
Due to the station’s construction and development over 50 years ago, many of the buildings and features now represent a historic component within the ranger station that is in need of evaluation for the National Register of Historic Places. Also, the establishment of the ranger station prior to the enactment of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 led to the development of the site within the footprint of a prehistoric Mogollon/Ancestral Puebloan archaeological site with no mitigation measures observed. In order to maintain and ensure the Black Mesa Ranger Station can continue to function as the administrative site for the district, a cultural resource management plan is required in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act and consultation with the Arizona State Historic Perseveration Office and Tribes with cultural affiliation to the Black Mesa Ranger District.
A total of 20 historic buildings associated with the Ranger Station were recorded as well as artifacts and features that are part of the prehistoric component. The site represents that location of a historic Forest Service Ranger Station, that is still currently in use, and prehistoric temporary habitation and resource processing site. The overall site was evaluated for the National Register of Historic Places based on both its historic and prehistoric components. The historic components were determined not eligible for the National Register while the prehistoric components are eligible for the National Register
ATV Safety Training: It\u27s a Valuable Tool for Everyone!
All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are fun to ride but they are only a machine. As much as everyone would like to blame the ATV when things go wrong, the end result ultimately stems from the operator’s actions. It doesn’t have a brain, it does what you tell it to do, and it cannot tell the operator that this is a bad idea or what the consequences might be. These thoughts are ultimately the operator’s responsibility to assess and acknowledge what risks exist. Driving is a skill and education is a key portion of ATV safety training. Our current requirements are not regulated to be the same across the nation, creating complicated and miss-matched rules that vary from one state to the next. If knowledge is power and experience takes practice than ATV safety training could be the difference between life and death. In this study, there were 447 fatalities reported in Minnesota and Wisconsin during 2007-2020 that were attributed to ATVs but only 6% of these individuals had ATV safety training. Adults in the sample represented a whopping 82.7% of the population and our current system is providing a perpetually failing protective system that continuously provides our citizens with an educational injustice that is on the border of being negligent. It is time that we work together to fix this by requiring all ATV operators to take an ATV safety training class that teaches the same fundamental material, regardless of their age or experience level. This training is a valuable tool in reducing and preventing injuries or deaths and age should never be used as the defining characteristic that decides if safety education is necessary because age will never be a reliable indicator of experience on these machines, contrary to popular belief
The Precolonial History of the Macktown Historic District (11WO256)
For the past 60 years, Macktown (11WO256) has been the focus of many independent archaeological projects. As a result, the precolonial history of this site has never been holistically examined. In this thesis, precolonial data was gathered from every associated report and compiled to be visually and geospatially analyzed as well as interpreted. Using tools in ArcPro v.2.9, such as the Optimized-Hot Spot analysis tools in conjunction with the Empirical Bayesian Kriging tool, an examination was completed and the Early Archaic (10,000-8,000 BP) to Upper Mississippian (1,000 - 450 BP) occupations were refined. From this research, it has been realized that precolonial Macktown consisted of intermittent occupations throughout various established archaeological horizons and phases. 11WO256 has served as resource procurement stations and bivouacs throughout the Archaic period, to intense temporary base camps and substantial freshwater mollusk exploitation during the Middle and Late Woodland period, to ephemeral occupations during the Mississippian and Upper Mississippian periods. Site function varied, consisting of seasonal freshwater shell extraction, food processing, and stone tool manufacturing. Macktown finds itself as an interim between major cultural movements throughout the western Great Lakes and Upper Mississippian River Valley region
FERPA Self-Compliant Cloud Storage for Institutions and Professionals in Higher Education
FERPA compliance for institutions and professionals in higher education is an important component of any institutional information security strategy. As campuses face an expanding threat environment, they are limited by aging technological infrastructure. Over the coming years, this infrastructure will require replacement, which presents an opportunity to increase FERPA compliance using technological solutions that build on new technology. Using a FERPA self-compliant cloud as a service, this paper proposes a novel approach to compliance and security which can be adapted for use in today’s environment while easily growing to incorporate coming technological change
