    Get PDF
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the instructional supervision process in select English-speaking primary schools in Limbe 1 sub-division found in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. Three research questions were answered in this study: 1.What do Cameroon primary school head teachers and teachers report as the priority and frequency of administering instructional supervision practices? 2. To what extent do head teachers and teachers agree on the effectiveness (culture, communication, interaction and relationship) of instructional supervision? 3. What are the advantages and challenges in the instructional supervision process as reported by head teachers and teachers? A non-experimental design was used to collect data and incorporated both closed-ended and open-ended survey items. A total of 46 head teachers (46%) and 146 teachers (49%) in select government, mission, and private schools completed the surveys, with a return rate of 48%. A research assistant on site was used to collect data from participants. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28.0.1.1 for windows, measures of central tendency (frequencies, percentages, mean and Standard Deviation), and coding strategies. The results of this study revealed that participants were more females (head teachers; 69.6% and teachers; 84.0%) than males (head teachers; 16.0% and teachers; 30.4%). Over half of participants (head teacher; 80.4% and teachers; 80.7%) have Teacher Grade 1 Certificate as their highest level of education. Majority (41.3%) of the participants currently work in government schools and have more than ten years of experience as teacher or head teacher. The findings revealed that schools in the study area currently practice instructional supervision, with a high level of priority and frequency of administering instructional supervision practices. The results on the effectiveness of instructional supervision by teachers and head teachers indicated their agreement on culture, communication, interaction and relationship in instructional supervision. Information from the study has revealed that Cameroonian teachers reflect many of the same concerns, challenges, expectations, and needs as all teachers. Both teachers and head teachers suggested that organizational culture, relationships, and the structural organization of schools are aspects that must be taken into consideration when planning for instructional supervision. They also reported that training and resources are necessary for the professional preparation of teachers and the instructional supervision process. The lack of sufficient resources for training and professional improvement continued to pose on-going challenges for teachers and head teachers in this study

BE-COPULA AND PREPOSITION OMISSION IN SOMALI L2 ENGLISH COMPOSITIONS

    Get PDF
As a prospective Minnesota-licensed English as a second language (ESL) teacher, I believe that it is very important that the writing patterns of Somali students are studied because they are a major portion of the population of ESL learners in the state. This study examined three essays that were written by Somali students as part of their writing placement test for college. A plethora of issues were found, but the focus is on orthographic matters, the missing lexical auxiliary and the preposition . The orthographic matters include problems with spelling and capitalization, which are common in all three essays. The omission of the lexical auxiliary occurred in two of the essays, while the omission of the preposition was found in one essay. The paper explains what these issues are, what factors might have contributed to the issues, and what the issues mean for ESL teachers

Navigating Challenges: Experiences of African American Women as Presidents in U.S. Institutions of Higher Education

    Get PDF
This research study explored the experiences of African American women as they navigated challenges along their pathways to the position of president of colleges and universities. While there has been an increase in the percentage of women of color serving as presidents, the number of African American women holding these positions still needs to be higher. Therefore, this study focused on African American women as presidents in Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). I conducted a narrative inquiry designed to encourage participants to share their stories. I explored two research questions: 1) How have African American women navigated the administrative labyrinth to the presidency of colleges and universities? 2) How have race and gender affected African American women’s pathways to their institutions’ presidencies? The following five themes emerged from the analysis of the data: Breaking with traditions, The desire for success, Professional and personal support, The desire to be president, and Finding one’s way through the labyrinth. The findings show that African American women were steadfast, resolute, and determined to succeed despite the many challenges and barriers along their pathways to the presidency. In addition, the findings revealed that both private and professional mentoring helped the participants and that it was significant for their early aspirations for the position of president

An Analysis of Gender Wage Gap in Timor-Leste

    Get PDF
The gender wage gap, indicating the disparity in earnings between men and women, remains a pervasive issue worldwide, transcending both developed and developing nations, including Timor-Leste. Therefore, this study focuses on the gender wage gap in Timor-Leste. Utilizing data from the Timor-Leste Labor Force Survey for 2021, this research employs multiple linear regression to assess the factors influencing the wages of working-aged men and women. The Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method is applied to identify factors contributing to the gender wage gap, distinguishing between explained and unexplained factors. The results show that living in urban areas, having advanced and intermediate education levels, working in the formal sector, having a permanent contract, and working full-time significantly affect wages. There is a disparity in wages, with men earning an average of 2.79 percent more than women. Explained factors contribute to an 8.6 percent reduction in the gender wage gap, highlighting the role of variables such as urban living, advanced education, and formal sector employment. However, unexplained factors exacerbate the gap by 11.39 percent, emphasizing the possibility of gender-based discrimination

Exploring the Impact of Institutional Policies on Academic Freedom: Professors’ Perspectives in Higher Education in the United States

    Get PDF
This research aims at exploring the impact of institutional policies on professors’ academic freedom in higher education institutions in Minnesota. This research used a qualitative method and an in-depth interview approach to explore the topic. Data were collected not only from research participants’ perspectives, but also from their real stories and experiences. Research findings indicated that research participants from both private and public institutions had foundational concepts of academic freedom. Research participants perceived critical roles of academic freedom in their professional life, in the institutional life, and in students’ life. Research findings showed critical factors in research participants’ career life that undermined academic freedom, thus, knowledge production. These factors came from different sources such as students, research funding criteria, political agenda, accrediting agencies, institutional policies, organizational culture, and personal identities. More than ever before, academic freedom needs defense if students, institutions, and society want to have a functional and excellent education and if new knowledge is the ultimate goal for this civilization

Evolutionary Relationships of the Anglerfishes (Lophioidei) with a Total Evidence Approach: Illuminating Habitat Transition Impacts on Anglerfish Lures and Body Shapes

    Get PDF
The anglerfishes (Lophioidei) consist of carnivorous fishes renowned for their first dorsal-fin spine luring specialization used in prey capture behavior. Anglerfishes encompass a unique fish lineage (\u3e400 species) distributed at varying oceanic depths that have resulted in fascinating evolutionary adaptations, including pseudo-walking, chemical prey attractant lures, bioluminescent lures and barbels, sexual dimorphism, and male parasitism. Chapter one of this thesis investigates the evolutionary relationships of the suborder Lophioidei using a total evidence approach. A total evidence approach is a strategy used to infer evolutionary relationships that combine different lines of evidence, such as morphological and genetic data, to provide a robust hypothesis of evolutionary relationships and is used to investigate the evolution of anglerfishes (Acanthuriformes: Lophioidei). In this thesis I explore the evolutionary relationships of Lophioidei with ultraconserved elements (UCEs), UCEs and mitochondrial genomes, and a total evidence approach that combines UCEs, mitochondrial genomes, and morphological characters. The results of these analyses recover a monophyletic Lophioidei as the sister group to Tetraodontoidei within Acanthuriformes, with Lophioidei+Tetraodontoidei sister to the boarfish Antigonia (Caproidae). Within Lophioidei, the goosefishes (Lophioideo) were inferred as the stem anglerfish lineage. The Lophiidae are the sister group to a clade comprised of the frogfishes (Antennarioideo) + batfishes (Ogcocephaloideo) and the coffinfishes (Chaunancoideo) + deep-sea anglerfishes (Ceratoideo). Chapter 2 explores the luring apparatus of anglerfishes, the primary tool used in prey capture and communication in certain groups. The anglerfishes have three distinctive luring strategies: mechanical luring, chemical attractant luring, and bioluminescent luring. Anglerfish specimens and photos procured from ichthyological museum collections and online public databases are used to collect morphometric data from the lures of these fishes. Depth records collected from FishNet 2 are then used to examine lure morphometrics based on various oceanic depths. Using the total evidence tree in Chapter 1, the study recovers two independent evolutionary events of a mechanical luring strategy in Lophioidei and Caulophrynidae, one independent evolutionary event of bioluminescent luring in Ceratoideo, two independent evolutionary events of chemical attractant luring in Antennarius striatus and Ogcocephaloideo, and a single event of the luring apparatus found in Neoceratidae. Lure total length to standard length ratios from smallest to largest include Chaunacoideo 0.047, Antennarioideo 0.186, Lophioideo 0.208, and Ceratoideo 0.443, indicating deep-sea pelagic anglerfishes have the highest lure to standard length ratios. Chapter 3 continues the investigation of habitat impacts on Lophioidei to investigate body shape changes and lure ranges. A geometric morphometric analysis is performed on the same taxa used in Chapter 2, while also measuring luring ranges in degrees based on videos and photos as a reference to set parameters for the radial range of which these fishes can move their lures. We found the luring ranges to be highly variable across Lophioidei with lateral body shapes exhibiting significant disparities between chemical lures compared to bioluminescent lures (P value: 0.064) and mechanical lures (P value: 0.069). Body shape disparities were also found between Bathypelagic and Abyssopelagic anglers and between the Ceratoideo compared to Lophioideo (P value: 0.034), Antennarioideo (P value: 0.001), and Ogcocephaloideo (P value: 0.020)

    Chaos Engineering for Microservices

    Get PDF
Chaos engineering is a relatively new concept that is growing in popularity as it helps companies to be more resilient in the face of unexpected networking or software failure. The idea behind chaos engineering is that if you can create controlled failures, you can discover where your system is weak and then fix those weaknesses before something happens to your production environment. This research has been done on microservices, which are small pieces of code that perform specific tasks on behalf of a larger application. Microservices are often hosted on different servers and run by different teams, so they are much more fragile than monolithic applications. Microservices also tend to be written in different languages, which makes them more difficult to understand and test for bugs. The goal of this study was to determine whether microservices can be made more resilient through chaos engineering or not; specifically, if it is possible to find out what kinds of failures occur most often and how long they take to resolve
