The Impact of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy on the Success of Secondary Students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders in Educational Settings

    No full text
Manifold studies report the relations among culturally relevant pedagogy and the academic and social success of students in the classroom. Culturally relevant pedagogy and teaching are essential features of teacher training and of classroom practice. Culturally relevant pedagogy enhances student learning and promotes feelings of community in the classroom. Its methods and the philosophy are student centered and incorporating students’ unique backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences into their educational systems. In addition to fostering students’ sense of belonging, culturally relevant pedagogy can also impact their critical thinking and overall academic performance (Hammond, 2014). This review examines the use of culturally relevant pedagogy with secondary students are diagnosed with emotional behavior disorders. Three questions guide the analysis. First, to what extent and how can culturally relevant improve academic and cognitive performance for students with emotional behavior disorders? Second, does culturally relevant teaching improve the social integration and behavior of special education students with emotional behavior disorders? Third, to what extent could culturally relevant pedagogy play apart in preventing disproportioned representation of students with emotional behavioral, as well as the improvement of teacher efficacy

Neglected Gatekeepers: The Minnesota High School Counselor’s Role in Concurrent Enrollment

The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study was to examine how Minnesota high school counselors negotiate their role in concurrent enrollment course advising and registration. This study aimed to highlight barriers and opportunities that could ultimately enhance student access and success. Three research questions guided this study: (a) How do high school counselors describe the experience of advising students on course registration in a concurrent enrollment program? (b) What do high school counselors share as challenges when advising students on college course registration in a concurrent enrollment program? And (c) How do high school counselors describe their learning or training on college course advising in a concurrent enrollment program? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Minnesota high school counselors. Despite the unique context of each high school counselor’s experience, three key themes emerged: managing confusion and constraints at the high school, feeling like overlooked advocates, and remaining committed to their students and schools despite the challenges. The findings suggest opportunities for K–12 districts and postsecondary institutions to provide greater support, ranging from practical solutions, such as offering targeted training, to systemic changes, such as standardizing program criteria or dedicating staff to support these efforts. Additionally, this study highlights a mismatch between Minnesota’s educational policies and the realities faced by high school counselors, underscoring the need for policy alignment to better serve students

The authors share their perspectives on how they navigated the demands of medical school, residency, and hospital medicine, while raising two children and maintaining their marriage. They reflect on how they both experienced loneliness, stress, and hopelessness during the dark days of residency, but each felt isolated from the other during this time because of misaligned assumptions about the others’ experience. A stay-at-home father describes how he chose a role that was not defined by traditional expectations or others\u27 perceptions, but by his own values and vision for his life. He concludes by expressing his gratitude, fulfillment, and pride in their family and choices, and how they continue to model for their children what it means to think for oneself and challenge the status quo
