Inquiry Project- Based Learning (IPBL) in the 5-8 STEM Classroom

    Get PDF
Inquiry Project-Based Learning (IPBL) has emerged as a prominent educational approach for enhancing student engagement and fostering deep learning experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classrooms. This paper explores the implementation and effectiveness of IPBL specifically tailored for students in grades 5-8 within the STEM disciplines. Through a comprehensive review of relevant literature and research studies, this paper examines the theoretical foundations, pedagogical strategies, and practical applications of inquiry PBL in the middle school STEM curriculum. Pedagogical strategies such as the 5E instructional model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) and 4C/ID Model are used to design thinking processes that explore effective frameworks for structuring IPBL activities in the middle school STEM classroom. Furthermore, this paper discusses the various benefits and challenges associated with implementing inquiry PBL in the 5-8 STEM classroom. Benefits include increased student motivation, improved conceptual understanding, and enhanced collaboration and communication skills. However, challenges such as resource constraints, time limitations, and the need for teacher professional development are also addressed. Overall, this paper highlights the significance of IPBL as a transformative educational approach for engaging students in authentic, hands-on learning experiences in the middle school STEM classroom. By integrating IPBL into the curriculum, educators can empower students to become active participants in their learning

A Secondary Data Analysis on Services Provided to Racial and Ethnic Minorities at the Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center

    Get PDF
Racial and ethnic disparities in service provision within victim support organizations are a pressing concern in the field of sexual violence advocacy. The thesis examines disparities using data from the CMSAC in 2021, revealing nuanced patterns of service usage among diverse racial and ethnic groups. It utilizes a quantitative research design and explores data using descriptive analysis and chi-square analysis to identify major components of services and victimizations. It uncovers significant variations in help-seeking behaviors and experiences of victimization within these communities. The study reveals disparities in service utilization among racial and ethnic groups: Latino/Hispanic individuals seek support for child sexual abuse and sexual violence information, highlighting the need for cultural competence. Conversely, Asian communities access services less due to stigma and barriers. Black/African American and White (Non-Latino)/Caucasian individuals engage more, reflecting systemic barriers. Common victimizations include adult sexual assault, domestic/family violence, and sex trafficking, with underreporting underscoring the need for culturally sensitive approaches. The thesis recommends victim support organizations to enhance outreach, cultural competence, and intake processes for diverse communities. Emphasizing intersectional approaches, it calls for further research on correlations between racial/ethnic minorities and victimization risk factors. Despite limitations like secondary data reliance, the study provides valuable insights into racial and ethnic disparities. Addressing these gaps can empower organizations to provide equitable access to support services for all sexual violence survivors

THE ACOUSTIC PHONETIC PROPERTIES OF VOICELESS FRICATIVES IN ANYI

    Get PDF
African languages are well endowed with fricatives. Common ones /f, v, s, z, ʒ, ʃ, h /, less common ones /β, ɸ, s’, ç, ɣ, χ, ɦ/, and rare ones /ʃw, ɕ, ɕw , zɥ/ are all found in West African languages (Ladefoged 1968:45-66). Yet, surprisingly, there is a severe paucity of data on the acoustic phonetic properties of fricatives in these languages. This paper seeks to remedy this situation by providing a comprehensive overview of voiceless fricatives in Anyi, an Akan language spoken in Côte d’Ivoire. Twelve correlates, i.e., F0, F1, F2, F3, F4, Center of Gravity, intensity, duration, and bandwidths (B1, B2, B3, B4) are extracted from /f/ and /s/ when they occur before /i, ɪ, e, ɛ, a, ɔ, o, ʊ, u/. The findings to be discussed are based on 5,436 tokens, that is, three repetitions of /f/ and /s/ produced by nine native speakers of Anyi, across 12 correlates. The paper helps to answer questions about the putative role of these correlates in speech intelligibility in Anyi and possibly other Akan languages

Two Poems: Imago, and Out of My Hands

These two poems address issues concerning my parents\u27 death. Imago (a terms from Lacanian psychoanalytic theory) addresses the uncanny moment of recognition when the speaker see his own mortality when recognizing features of his father\u27s face in his own reflection. Out of My Hands explores what comes next--not the afterlife, per se, but what to do with the bodies and why and who gets to decide. Below is a short bio note: Roger W. Hecht has published two poetry collections, Talking Pictures and Witness Report, and his work has appeared in such journals as Gargoyle, Book of Matches, Puerto del Sol, Diagram, and Denver Quarterly. He teaches literature and creative writing at SUNY Oneonta

Omnibus Edition of Special Poetry Issue: Boundaries, Borders, and their Dissolution

    Get PDF
Issues, crises, questions concerning boundaries and borders press on all sides. Throughout human history. In fact, one might see, as in geography, that boundaries and borders define human history—delineating populations, shifting coalitions and allegiances, the innumerable conflicts over them, the atrocities committed because of them, and the fate of the people within them, outside them, and attempting to cross them. From the Preface, this is the general theme of this omnibus edition of the Special Poetry Issue (Vol 9 Iss 2), Boundaries, Borders and their Dissolution. This omnibus edition contains the entirety of Vol 9.2 in one complete file so that the whole issue can be perused in order; this omnibus edition also contains some additions, emendations, and minor corrections of 9.2

THE ACOUSTIC PHONETIC PROPERTIES OF THE EPENTHETIC VOWEL IN SPANISH-ACCENTED ENGLISH

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research paper is to describe the acoustic phonetic features of the epenthetic vowel inserted by Spanish-accented speakers of English in sC syllable onsets. Numerous studies have examined this issue. Many have identified the epenthetic vowel as [ɛ]. However, its true acoustic phonetic identity has not been established. This is the first study of its kind that relies on acoustic phonetic measurements to examine the epenthetic vowel. Formant correlates (F0, F1, F2, F3, F4), intensity, and duration cues are used in revealing the true properties of this epenthetic vowel. The insights derived from this study also have technological applications

Fine Dining and Drinking in Nineteenth-Century St. Francisville, Louisiana: A Consumer Choice Examination of a Mid-Nineteenth Century Tavern, Coffeehouse, and Residence.

    Get PDF
This thesis presented here details the analysis of the artifact assemblage from the Royal Hotel site (16WF175) located in St. Francisville, Louisiana. The artifact assemblage came from two mid-nineteenth-century features. These include a cellar (Feature 1) and a privy (Feature 5). These features are related to both a tavern and coffeehouse and to domestic occupations. These assemblages were analyzed using techniques developed by Consumer Choice Theory with the goal of determining the socioeconomic status of both the clientele of the tavern and coffeehouse and the occupants of the site. These methods included: Miller’s (1980, 1991) mean ceramic values, Shultz and Gust’s (1980) beef-cut analysis, examination of the alcohol bottles and drinking glasses, and examination of various household decorations and personal items. It was found that both the occupants and the clientele of the tavern and coffeehouse were likely of middle-to-high socioeconomic status

Not so Hidden Secret of Endowment Growth

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to determine the optimal spending allocation and investment portfolio strategies that could provide a consistent source of alternative revenue through endowment funds while growing value for private 4-year higher education institutions. By assessing institutional endowment management through alignment of long-term investment strategies and spending allocation plans, institutions can optimize strategic endeavors and minimize risk (Suttles & Snyder, 2023). Many higher education institutions use a simplistic approach to calculating their spending allocation (i.e., moving average) and little attention is given to analyzing various strategies, both spending allocation and investment philosophy, to unleash the true power of the perpetual nature of endowment funds. Through modeling different investment portfolio strategies and spending allocation methodologies for 27 private 4-year higher education institutions in the Higher Education Price Index West North Central region from 2000 to 2022, this quantitative research study determined the optimal endowment pool investment strategy and spending allocation methodology that maintained or increased purchasing power and maximized investment performance overall in the long term. The Friedman’s two-way analysis of variance by ranks with planned post hoc comparisons indicated investment strategies (i.e., weighing equity securities and fixed-income compositions) with the more aggressive composition toward equities provided the largest significant growth in the overall endowment value. Further analysis indicated the spending allocation model that provided the most consistent allocation allotment over the period modeled was a moving average that took a longer time horizon into account
