Caring for Bereaved Parents After Perinatal Loss

    No full text
This manual was created by Mary Orman in partnership with Aspirus St. Luke’s. It served as her graduate project for a master’s degree in professional studies from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in Spring 2023. This manual for health care professionals provides guidance on how to support grieving parents. It offers ongoing, attentive and appropriate care through scheduled phone calls, starting a week after the loss and continuing up to the first anniversary of their child\u27s birth or passing. As the birthing person moves through the grief process, the script changes, but the ultimate goal is to help the birthing person move through grief to peace and acceptance. Importantly, this follow-up care is provided at no cost to the parent(s) or family. Throughout this manual, the Mediators of Grief outline in J. William Worden’s book Grief Counseling and Grief Therapy , fifth edition, and the Tasks for Mourning of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross have been followed

Relational Fits at Work: How Person-Supervisor and Person-Group Fit Influence Employee Engagement through Psychological Needs

Employee engagement is an important driver of organizational success, linked to outcomes such as increased productivity, job satisfaction, and retention. This study examines how relational fits, person-supervisor fit and person-group fit, enhance engagement through psychological need satisfaction. Applying Self-Determination Theory and Person-Environment Fit Theory, this research investigates how value congruence with supervisors and coworkers fulfills autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs for employees. A survey of 150 employees assessed relational fits, psychological need satisfaction, and engagement. Mediation analyses found that person-supervisor fit was linked to engagement primarily through autonomy and competence, while the relationship between person-group fit and engagement was fully explained by competence rather than relatedness. When analyzed alongside autonomy and competence, relatedness did not significantly predict engagement. While person-group fit was a stronger predictor of competence and overall psychological need satisfaction, person-supervisor fit still had a stronger impact on engagement. The findings contribute to existing theories by demonstrating how relational fits uniquely contribute to psychological need fulfillment and how each need is linked to engagement. Organizations can enhance engagement by utilizing value congruence in selection, leveraging high relational fit in employees, and strategically training to compensate for unmet needs from misfits

A Novel Business Email Compromise Detection Model Using Supervised Machine Learning

    No full text
Email communication is pivotal to business operations, enhancing financial growth, partnership, and collaboration. However, this reliance on email has introduced multilayered cyber threats, including Phishing, Malware, Spoofing, Data Breaches, and Encryption issues. This research presents a machine learning-based model to improve real-time BEC detection. The study began by reviewing BEC detection literature and analyzing 78 scholarly articles from 2018 to 2023 to identify existing research gaps. The study identified critical areas for development, particularly the real-time detection of new and evolving BEC tactics. State-of-the-art Gradient Boosting algorithms—CatBoost, LGBM, and XGBoost—were employed to differentiate BEC from non-BEC emails, based on 27 features extracted from the Enron email dataset. The initial performance metrics were promising, with LGBM, XGBoost, and CatBoost achieving accuracies of 93%, 93%, and 94%, respectively. CatBoost, demonstrating higher accuracy and F1 score, was further fine-tuned for enhanced performance. In an innovative data augmentation approach, Google Gemini, a sophisticated Large Language Model, generated new BEC email samples. These were combined with the original Enron email data set, using a CatBoost classifier to train on it to achieve an increased accuracy of 95%. This study highlights some of the limitations of current BEC detection approaches. Also, it illustrates the effective fusion of advanced machine learning algorithms and feature engineering in building robust cybersecurity defenses. Integrating supervised learning and large language models offers a new direction for email security enhancements and paves the way for interdisciplinary research

Explorations into Language Economics: Segmental Intelligibility Issues and its Implications for the Taiwanese Tour Guides’ English Proficiency

    No full text
The objective of this project is to investigate whether Taiwanese Accented English (TAE) speakers produce English vowels intelligibly. In this study, the recordings of the elicitation paragraph produced by 20 Taiwanese Accented English (TAE) speakers (10 males and 10 females) are downloaded from the Speech Accent Archive (SAA) database from George Mason University (2024). Acoustic phonetic analyses are carried out on their speech samples. This investigation focuses on 11 vowels found in 33 English words. The acoustic phonetic software Praat (Boersma & Weenink, 2024) is used to extract data collection and measurement. The acoustic correlates measured are: F0, F1, F2, F3, Duration, and Intensity correlates. F1 and F2 are singled out for analysis research because they are the most robust cues for assessing the intelligibility of vowels. These measurements are used to determine whether the vowels produced by the TAE participants mask each other. Masking thresholds are based on Koffi (2021, p. 75), and the degree of intelligibility is assessed using Catford’s (1987, pp. 89–90) Relative Functional Load (RFL) calculations. Acoustic vowel spaces are created to help visualize how the various vowels are produced by TAE speakers compared with those produced by their General American English (GAE) counterparts. Hillenbrand et al (1995, p. 3103) is taken to be representation of GAE. The analysis shows that the intelligibility of TAE speakers’ English is significantly impaired in the following vowel pairs: [i] and [ɪ], [ɪ] and [e], [u] and [o], [o] and [ɔ], [ɔ] and [a], and [æ] and [a]. Pedagogical implications and applications are further drawn in order to help TAE speakers improve their intelligibility because vowels are known to play an important role in the intelligibility of L2 English

Behavior Analytic Treatment of Methamphetamine Use: A Review of Contingency Management

    No full text
With morbidity rates continuing to climb, methamphetamine use continues to pose a significant public health problem with contingency management emerging as one of the most effective short-term interventions for methamphetamine use. Although it has only been five years since the last systematic review of contingency management, this literature review opted for a more focused approach to investigate the efficaciousness of contingency management in isolation and its specific impact on abstinence from methamphetamine use. Five studies were included and identified limitations in regards to long-term efficacy, incorporation of assessments, reinforcer magnitude, and reinforcer selection. Despite consistent findings supporting previous research on contingency management’s immediate impact, follow-up probes after the termination of the intervention remain scarce and data on abstinence over time is minimal, limiting our understanding of contingency management’s sustained effectiveness. Additionally, financial barriers and a lack of cost-reporting across studies highlights the need for a more in-depth analysis for contingency management as a scalable and affordable solution. This reviews highlights the costs and benefits of using contingency management as a treatment for methamphetamine while also emphasizing the importance of individualized treatment

Acoustic Phonetic Investigation of Lexical Stress Patterns in Nepali- Accented English

    No full text
Extensive research has been conducted on the acoustic correlates used by native English speakers to mark stress, raking the acoustic correlates: pitch/Fundamental frequency (F0), intensity, and duration (Fry, 1958; Fry, 1995; Ladefoged, 2003). Several researchers evaluated the raking of acoustic correlates in lexical stress by L2 speakers of English (Herrera Huezo, 2017; Koffi, 2021; Koffi & Mason, 2024; Payena et al., 2023). However, similar research has not been extended to Nepali Accented English (NAE). This study investigates the ranking of acoustic correlates of lexical stress in disyllabic words produced by NAE and determines whether these rankings differ from those observed in General American English (GAE). Data for this study comprised recordings of 16 NAE speakers (8 males and 8 females) obtained from Speech Accent Archive (SAA) website (Weinberger, 2015). Eight disyllabic words were analyzed using TextGrids created via Praat (Boersma & Weenink, 2013). Acoustic measurements of fundamental frequency, intensity, and duration were obtained, and the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) was applied to rank these cues according to their perceptual salience. Quantitative analysis revealed that the hierarchy of acoustic correlates in NAE speakers deviate from the patterns previously reported for GAE by Koffi (2021). Finally, pedagogical implications and applications are drawn, and relevant strategies are suggested to help NAE speakers understand stress patterns

Status of Evaluating Injuries and Injury Prevention Education In United States Elite Para-Hockey Athletes

    No full text
Athletes who participate in para-hockey are subject to sustaining injuries. Injury prevention education and mitigation can play a critical role in reducing the risk of injuries. However, to date, there is limited research on the injuries sustained while participating in para-hockey and the accessibility that para-athletes have to injury prevention education. This present study aimed to evaluate the injuries suffered by rostered members of the U.S. Men’s National Sled Hockey Team and Women’s National Development Sled Hockey Team and their interest in participating in an injury prevention education program for para-hockey athletes. A cross-sectional survey was distributed to the athletes and included quantitative and qualitative questions, which 19 participants answered. The reported results indicated 78.9% of the participants had sustained an injury from para-hockey, however, only 26.5% of participants had participated in an injury prevention education program. Although no significant correlation was found between sustaining an injury and receiving injury prevention education (p = .946), data triangulation from the qualitative responses suggested that para-hockey athletes believe an injury prevention education program would be beneficial to enhance their performance and longevity in the sport
