Supervising for Independence – A Case Study of Master Science Projects in Higher Education

    No full text
Students completing a Swedish Master's degree in engineering should have knowledge and skills to independently solve engineering issues. This autonomy should be developed and demonstrated within the M.Sc. project course. But, how can supervisors encourage independence? We have explored this in a case study through semi-structured interviews with students, supervisors and examiners of two M.Sc. projects. We investigated their view of independence, and how supervision correlates to independence. The results identify areas relevant to independence, namely supervision roles and relationships, student characteristics, M.Sc. process, and view on independence. The results confirm previous findings that students' knowledge of and motivation for the topic support independence. The supervisor's role is to guide and support through frequent peer-level discussions and to act as a discussion partner, while the student should have the main responsibility for the project. We conclude that it is important for supervisors to encourage students to take ownership of their M.Sc. projects and to design their own solutions, while providing the overall process and timelines

CheesePi: A Raspberry Pi based measurement platform

We aim to to objectively characterise the service users experience from their home Internet connections. The attributes of an Internet connection (e.g., bandwidth and loss rate) dictate the service quality that can be achieved over it. American video use is increasing rapidly with 70% of broadband users under the age of 35 getting some of their TV from online sources. Measurement of such connections is crucial, their characterisation is useful not only for human users (so people know what service they can receive) but also for the users’ devices for adaptive behaviour. Furthermore, large-scale characterisation data of individual connections can be collated into a characterisation of the whole network. In this paper we will present a distributed measurement system that we have built and the choices that comprise its design

Roles of DevOps tools in an automated, dynamic service creation architecture

    No full text
Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization facilitate, with their advanced pro- grammability features, the design of automated dynamic service creation platforms. Applying DevOps principles to service design can further reduce service creation times and support continuous operation. Monitoring, troubleshooting, and other DevOps tools can have different roles within virtualised networks, depending on virtualization level, type of instantiation, and user intent. We have implemented and integrated four key DevOps tools that are useful in their own right, but showcase also an integrated scenario, where they form the basis for a more complete and realistic DevOps toolkit. The current set of tools include a message bus, a rudimentary configuration tool, a probabilistic congestion detector, and a watchpoint mechanism. The demo also presents potential roles and use-cases for the tools

Strategic maintenance planning by fuzzy AHP and Markov Decision Processes

    No full text
The work of engineering and business professionals includes making a series of decisions and optimizations. Real world decision making problems faced by decision makers (DM) involve multiple, usually conflicting, criteria. These multi-criteria decision making problems (MCDM) are usually complicated and large in scale. In strategic Maintenance planning, choices are made on where to focus time and effort, where to spend money. We consider a framework for strategic maintenance planning in a modern maintenance driven organization. Our focus is on a multi-stage framework in which the planning is divided into two stages, identifying an optimal set of possible actions and finding the optimal decision policy for these actions for each point in time as a function of the stochastically evolving system state. To this respect we consider the MCDM method of AHP (Analytical hierarchical programming) in a fuzzy environment, and Markov decision processes (MDP)

    Modeling Universal Instruction Selection

    No full text
Instruction selection implements a program under compilation by selecting processor instructions and has tremendous impact on the performance of the code generated by a compiler. This paper introduces a graph-based universal representation that unifiees data and control flow for both programs and processor instructions. The representation is the essential prerequisite for a constraint model for instruction selection introduced in this paper. The model is demonstrated to be expressive in that it supports many processor features that are out of reach of state-of-the-art approaches, such as advanced branching instructions, multiple register banks, and SIMD instructions. The resulting model can be solved for small to medium size input programs and sophisticated processor instructions and is competitive with LLVM in code quality. Model and representation are significant due to their expressiveness and their potential to be combined with models for other code generation tasks

Automatic Matching of Software Component Requirements using Semi-formal Specifications and a CBSE Ontology

    No full text
One of the most significant tasks of component-based software development is concerned with finding suitable components for integration. This paper introduces a novel development framework that promotes reusability and focuses on assessing the suitability level of candidate components. A specifications profile is first created using a semi-formal natural language that describes the desired functional and non-functional properties of the component(s) sought. A parser automatically recognizes parts of the profile and translates them into instance values of a dedicated CBSE ontology, the latter addressing issues of components’ reusability. Available components on the market are also stored as instances of the CBSE ontology. Matching between required and offered component properties takes place automatically at the level of the ontology items and a suitability ratio is calculated that suggests which components to consider for integration
