HIKING TRAIL GENERATION IN INFINITE LANDSCAPES
This project procedurally generates an infinite wilderness populated with deterministic hiking trails. Our approach recognizes that hiking trails depend on contextual information beyond the location of the path itself. To address this, we implemented a layered procedural system that orchestrates the generation process. This helps ensure the availability of contextual data at each stage. The first layer handles terrain generation, establishing the foundational landscape upon which trails will traverse. Subsequent layers handle point of interest identification and selection, trail network optimization through proximity graphs, and efficient pathfinding across the terrain. A notable feature of our approach is the deterministic nature of the hiking trails. This characteristic removes the need for storing trail or terrain data, as this technique regenerates the same terrain and paths from any starting point and approach direction. The result is an immersive, boundlessly explorable wilderness
The Impact of Soil Disturbance on Soil Bacterial Community Composition
Soil bacterial communities are an important part of terrestrial ecosystems due to their roles in biogeochemical cycling processes. Consequently, understanding how soil disturbance affects the soil bacterial diversity is vital to understanding the entire ecosystem. In this study we examined the effects of soil disturbance (by mining) on the soil bacterial community composition from three sites on Bauxite Ridge in Southeast Tennessee compared to three undisturbed sites in a nearby location. The soil bacterial community was analyzed by 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing of total DNA extracted from the soil samples collected from each of the six sites. Characterization of the bacterial community of these six sites showed that soil disturbance does not appear to be correlated with the differences in the diversity of the bacterial community, though this does not correlate with previous research

Game Based Learning: Engaging Students and Measuring Their Progress
Digital natives are constantly surrounded by technology. Therefore, traditional methods of teaching are becoming obsolete and increasingly creative solutions are required to keep students engaged. Among these solutions is a concept called game based learning. Game based learning is a unique educational experience that incorporates the engagement factors of video games with education. Even though it is still in an early stage of adoption, game based learning has been proven to be a surprisingly effective tool for providing students with a valuable educational experience. Even with this evidence in mind, current game based learning programs still hold the potential to further improve their ability to captivate students.
The Center for Innovation and Research in Computing (CIRC) is currently developing a game based learning web application. The contribution of this work is the creation of the Engagement and Progress Module. Specifically, this project is focused on the construction of the attendance tracking system. The goal is to reduce the number of clicks required from the user to mark down students’ attendance exceptions for the day. This involves using AJAX to update a database while also updating HTML without needing to reload the page. Responsive design is also used to update the layout and functionality of the front end depending on the screen size of the device used
The Sound of the Civil War: Examining the Intersection between Music and Emotion in America, 1861-1865
The topics of the history of music and the history of music intersect in the Civil War in fascinating ways. Both religious music and “secular” music were seen to have great power over their listeners, potentially with the power to alter the directions of lives or their salvation status. Music was used both as a mode of rebellion against the antagonizing army and ideal and a rebellion against unnecessarily violent acts. Each side used it against the other, but a select few also used it against the war itself. Soldiers marched to music, set camp to music, and fought to music; civilians likewise used it to express their grief and patriotism, their emotional ties to the fighting and opposition.
