Heavy Expectations: Gender Stereotypes and Depression Among College Undergraduates

    No full text
Gender-specific stressors have been heavily researched, especially for the two most common genders of male and female. However, while gender stereotypes have also been examined with some frequency, the relationship between expected gender roles and depression has yet to gather much research. Through the participation of college students, who often face intense gender role pressures in building their young adult lives, this study searches for any relationship between the distress that may be caused by gender role expectations and depressive symptoms as described by Beck\u27s Depression Inventory (Beck, 1961). College students\u27 perceived gender pressures will be measured and compared to each other, average response levels, and depressive symptomatology

Like Shapes Moving in Another World: An Identification and Interpretation of Mythical Figures in C. S. Lewis’ Novel The Silver Chair

    Get PDF
As a result of his conversion to Christianity, author C. S. Lewis felt compelled to formulate a unique definition of myth. From his perspective, myth is a means through which God communicates His truth to the non-Christian world. Myth recognizes the yearning for home all people experience yet cannot satisfy, but while it correctly diagnoses humanity’s symptoms, myth fails to treat the underlying disease responsible for them. The influence of non-Christian, specifically Greek, myth can be felt most strongly in The Silver Chair, the sixth installment of Lewis’ series The Chronicles of Narnia. Through the allusions this essay explores, in addition to many others, The Silver Chair presents a mythical world both reminiscent of and distinct from its source material. Lewis’ alterations to the original myths reflect his belief in a world to come. They also shine a new light on all the myths that are referenced within The Silver Chair. In this new light, the faint hints of the gospel glimmer, and these glimmers should inspire mythologists, especially those who believe in Jesus Christ, to reexamine their favorite stories with an aim to identify the Christian themes that move within them

Connecting with the Counselors: Innovative Approaches to Enhance the Recruitment of Male Students in Secondary Schools

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2019) recognized the role of a culturally diverse workforce in improving the quality and cultural competence of care. The AACN identified the need to attract students from underrepresented groups, including men. According to the results of the 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey, only 9.4% of registered nurses in the United States are men, a 2.8% increase from 2013 (Smiley et al., 2021). The 2020 United States Census reported that 49.5% of the population is male (United States Census Bureau, 2020). A significant effort is needed to increase the percentage of men in nursing to better reflect the population of men in the United States. One strategy to increase the percentage of men in nursing is to increase the recruitment efforts of men in high schools. School counselors facilitate high school students’ exploration of career options (Pannoni & Moody, 2020) and influence the career path decisions of teenagers. Several studies have reported high school counselors often not encouraging high school students who reported an interest in nursing (Bartfay et al., 2010; Boughn, 1994; Grainger & Bolan, 2006; Kelly et al., 1996; Kronsberg, 2017; LaRocco, 2007; Meadus & Twomey, 2011). However, these studies were dated and did not reflect current school counselor practices. At the 48th Annual AAMN Conference, Dr. Andrew J. Richards and Dr. Stephanie Gedzyk-Nieman presented the findings from a mixed methods study of school counselors that found school counselors had a positive attitude and perception toward men in nursing but lacked resources to counsel male students who are interested in nursing. The purpose of this podium presentation is to update the members of AAMN on the activities that have occurred since our presentation at the last AAMN conference. First, we started a national database of men and allies who are willing to partner with school counselors. Second, we are creating a phone and email script that AAMN members can use to contact school counselors; the estimated completion date is May 2024. Third, we are creating a section of AAMN\u27s website to house various resources for school counselors; the estimated completion date is June 2024. Finally, Dr. Richards and Dr. Gedzyk-Nieman plan on representing AAMN at the 2024 annual American School Counselor Association (ASCA) conference in Kansas City, MO (July 2024).
