Science, Sand, and Faith: Exploring Competing Explanations of Coconino Sandstone
The Coconino Sandstone, a Permian rock layer found in the western United States, is a topic of debate among standard geologists and flood geologists. The conventional geological interpretation claims the sandstone is an eolian deposit, meaning the sediments were deposited by wind (McKee, 1979; Selley, 1968). In their view, key elements of the sandstone, like the cross-stratified beds, high degree of frosting, and the animal trackways, confirm the Coconino’s similarity to modern eolian dunes (McKee, 1979). As this rock layer is sandwiched between layers typically interpreted by flood geologists as being deposited during the flood, the idea that the Coconino Sandstone was once an area of dry sand dunes deposited by wind is problematic for flood geologists. Recent evidence from analysis of the sandstone composition has caused flood geologists to herald the plausibility of the subaqueous deposition of Coconino sandstone (Whitmore & Garner, 2018). Other research has concluded that the animal trackways created in underwater environments are similar to tracks found in the sandstone (Brand & Tang, 1991). To create the observed cross-stratifications in an underwater environment, flood geologists have proposed a mechanism inspired by modern sand waves (Snelling & Austin, 1992). In my opinion, flood geologists present compelling evidence for the subaqueous deposition of Coconino sandstone, but I do not believe their arguments should be considered evidence for a global Biblical flood
Life From God
“I ask that out of the riches of His glory, He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Then you, being rooted and grounded in love, will have power, together with all the saints, to comprehend the length and width and height and depth of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen,” Ephesians 3:16-21, ESV
Laurie Sim Living Memoirs Interview
Laurie Sim, a Southern alumna, shared her experiences as a student missionary in Aranyaprathet, Thailand. She served in refugee camps during the Cambodian refugee crisis, providing nursing care and assisting with nutrition programs. Inspired by her mother’s nursing career and her brother’s mission stories, she overcame initial fears and found purpose in helping others. Her time as a student missionary shaped her both spiritually and professionally, influencing her future missionary and advocacy work.
Thailand, located in Southeast Asia, shares borders with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Thailand blends Buddhist traditions, monarchy, and modern influences. The country was historically known as Siam and remained independent during European colonial rule. Thailand has a diverse landscape, including mountains, fertile plains, and tropical coastlines, contributing to its strong agricultural and tourism industries. Bangkok, the capital, serves as a political and economic hub. While Thailand has experienced political instability, it continues to develop as a major regional power with a growing economy and vibrant cultural identity.

Effect of bond strength variation and ionizing radiation on mutations in cytosine-guanine islands*
Ionizing radiation produces free electrons within cells which ionizes DNA and has potential to cause carcinogenic mutations. CpG islands are regions that are rich in cytosine and guanine bases and are common sites of single point mutations and strand breaks. DFT is used to calculate the potential energy of DNA nucleotide dimers varying bond lengths in five different ionized states. Potential energy curves are used to determine bond stability, and electron density of atoms of interest are compared at specific bond lengths between ionized states. This provides insight into patterns and possible mechanisms of mutation resulting from ionizing radiation
Blanca N. Grand Living Memoirs Interview
Blanca, a Southern alumna, served as a student missionary in Seoul, Korea, where she faced unexpected challenges and opportunities. Through her experiences teaching and engaging with the community, she gained valuable personal and spiritual growth. Her time abroad shaped her perspective and influenced her path, leaving a lasting impact on her life and career.
Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a major cultural, economic, and political center located on the Han River. It has been the country’s capital since 1394 and has rapidly urbanized, becoming a global leader in technology and innovation. The city blends modern skyscrapers with historic palaces, temples, and traditional markets. Seoul is known for its vibrant culture, including K-pop, fashion, and street food, as well as its strong emphasis on education and innovation.

Life With God
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it,” Matthew 13:44-45, ESV
Phospholes and Carbazoles: A Different Approach to Making Brighter Molecules*
This study explores a different approach to making brighter light-emitting molecules through smart molecular design. It combines phosphole and carbazole structures to create light-emitting materials. This study looks at the number and orientation of the carbazole to increase solid-state emission, brightness, and efficiency
