The Correlation Between Personality Traits and Musical Preferences
The research my group is gathering will be addressing if personality traits affect musical preferences and interests through surveys and questionnaires. The aim of this research is to reveal the personality of ourselves and others as we learn how different aspects pique our interests and if these preferences relate to nature or nurture. We hope to find that more open and extroverted traits prefer listening to a wide variety of music, while more introverted and close-minded individuals like to listen to only certain genres
How Romantic Relationships Affect Academic Performance*
Academic success and motivation are important factors in the well-being and future achievements of undergraduate students. While many influence academic outcomes, romantic relationships may be overlooked as a factor. This study explores whether romantic involvement enhances or hinders academic motivation and performance in college students. Methods: Participants (N = 102) were undergraduate students, grouped by relationship status: in romantic relationship or single/divorced. Data were collected via a Google Form survey, including demographic questions, self-reported GPA, and three validated scales: the Romantic Relationship Composite (for relationships quality), Escala Rendimiento Académico (for academic performance), and the Academic Motivation Scale. This quantitative study used self-report data, with romantic relationship status as the independent variable and academic motivation, performance, and Grade Point Average (GPA) as the dependent variables. Results: Students in romantic relationships reported slightly higher academic motivation scores (M=, SD=) compared to single/divorced peers (m=, SD=), though the difference was not statistically significant (p\u3e .05). However, relationship satisfaction is positively correlated with academic motivation (r=, p\u3e .05), suggesting that higher-quality relationships may support academic engagement. Conclusion: These findings suggest that while a relationship status alone may impact academic outcomes, the quality of romantic relationships could play a role in students’ motivation. Further research is recommended to explore these dynamics over time
The Words of the Wise and Polemical Theology*
Multiple studies have explored polemic theology, or the apologetic adaptation of extrabiblical material in Scripture. However, a less-explored potential application is the use of foreign wisdom literature in a section of Proverbs often termed The Words to the Wise [Ones] (Proverbs 22:17-24:22). Among these sayings is Proverbs 23:17-18, which alludes to the idea of a distinctly Israelite afterlife in which all injustice will be set right. This project analyzes the prevalence of this concept in both Proverbs and the ancient Near East and investigates the applicability of polemic theology in this passage
Mobile Application for Historical Markers*
Students find it challenging to engage in their local history solely through in-class instruction. Traditionally, teachers remedy this by organizing field trips. However, field trips can be challenging because they are costly, time-consuming, and a liability to the school. Because of these issues, teachers cannot take the students on as many field trips as they would like. The solution is a web app that allows students to discover the historical sites in their areas. This enables the students to independently visit historical sites and gain the valuable out-of-classroom experience that field trips can help with. The web app was introduced to 30 students attending a high school in Collegedale, TN. 24 students answered the survey
The Effects of AI Tutors on Beginner Programmers*
Generative AI’s ability to solve coding problems has raised concerns about Computer Science (CS) education. However, recent research has shown promise in its ability to tutor students. Specifically, The literature does not tend to adequately preserve desirable difficulties, such as active recall or higher-order thinking. And when they do, they use self-reporting instead of experiments to measure the effectiveness of the AI tutor.
Our research will address this significant research gap by using a no-code AI tutor to preserve desirable difficulties, and a randomized control experiment followed by a post-test to obtain strong evidence that AI can be an effective tutor
