    The Future Medical Technology: A Study of the Impact of Clinical Trials on Medical Devices and Adoption Rates

    The purpose of this study is to analyze how the effects of clinical trials may or may not lead to an increase in adoption rates for medical devices. This was done by finding data that had dealt with a medical device which I decided to go with Magnetic resonance imaging as well as clinical trial testing density per million in various countries. I had three main datasets, my main dataset being the World Health Organization set that pertained to the total density per million population with MRI units in each of their respective countries. Second, came my own recorded data through clinicaltrials.org in which I recorded the amount of MRI clinical trials that were conducted in each country from 2010-2013. Lastly, I recorded the population of each country that was in the WHO dataset from 2010-2013 from Worldometer. Through my regressions and results, I wasn’t able to produce any significant findings within my research question and it calls for further data and testing needed to be done using potential other variables and regressions. Neither confirming nor denying my hypothesis that clinical trial testing leads to higher adoption rates for medical devices

    She Means Business: Investigating Name-Race Biases Towards Black American Women in the Job Market on Its Impact on The Semantic Processing of Job Prestige

    Historically, stereotypes and implicit biases have hindered employment opportunities for Black women in America, especially those with distinctive names. This study examined gendered and name-race biases in how female race names are processed within job contexts. Using electroencephalography to measure semantic processing, we investigated whether perceptions of job prestige changed when participants were primed with racially cued female names. Contrary to our hypothesis, the type of female race name did not significantly affect semantic processing or performance. However, job prestige did influence semantic processing, with participants showing lower mean N400 amplitudes in response to high-prestige jobs compared to low-prestige ones. Task focus and social desirability biases likely contributed to participants accurately assessing job prestige without prioritizing race cues. Factors like name popularity and the type of last name may have influenced the racial perception of names, explaining the absence of race\u27s impact on the semantic processing of job prestige. We also considered how familiarity biases, influenced by participants\u27 age and limited job market experience, might have contributed to their congruency with low-prestige jobs and incongruency with high-prestige jobs. Additionally, we applied the role congruity theory to understand why job prestige impacted semantic processing. Despite limitations such as sample size and name associations, future research should further investigate how stereotypes and implicit biases affect decision-making neural mechanisms in hiring processes

    This study introduces the design and analysis of a web-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. It focuses on comparing different database structures and using normal forms to make storing and accessing data more efficient. The main goal of this study is to explore how databases for CRM systems can be designed to be secure, efficient, and reliable, especially when handling sensitive information. By exploring various database designs and their adherence to normal forms, the research seeks to find the best ways to organize customer data to improve security and system performance. It describes a CRM system that protects sensitive information and allows administrators to easily update member data, showing how database design affects both system operation and user experience. Using MySQL, PHP, and web hosting services, this study lays the groundwork for understanding the role of database architecture in developing CRM systems. It involves a thorough review of database design literature and a practical examination of these designs in a CRM setting. This research is a foundation for future work in CRM systems, emphasizing the importance of database design in effectively managing customer relationships. By starting with database architectures and normal forms, the study adds to the discussion on how to enhance CRM databases for better security and efficiency, providing valuable insights for both developers and researchers

    Investigating the Influence of Pond Size and Water Quality on Water Bird Visitation at the William J. Robertson Nature Preserve

    Agriculture and urban expansion have caused widespread degradation and fragmentation of wetland ecosystems in the United States. As a result, the maintenance of wetland habitats is increasingly important for both natural ecosystems and human communities. Redevelopment of industrial and agricultural lands into wetlands has shown promise as an effective way to decrease contamination and provide necessary habitat for local species, but there is a need for further research into understanding how diverse biotic communities can establish in restored brownfields. This study contributes to our understanding of wetland restoration in a former brownfield turned nature preserve in Northeastern Ohio, by investigating the influence of pond size and water quality on differences in pond visitation by water birds. Bird counts and identifications were performed at seven adjacent ponds within the preserve between May 29th and September 24th, 2023, and were compared to recordings of six independent variables in each pond: water depth, pond area, amount of exposed shoreline, water pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentrations in water. Water birds were assigned to three functional groups: dabbling waterfowl, predatory wading birds, and shorebirds. Friedman tests showed that each bird group recorded significantly different visitation rates between the seven study ponds. Dominance analyses showed that the amount of exposed shoreline was the strongest predictor variable of these differences in bird visitation between ponds for all three bird groups, with pond area as the second strongest variable. More broadly, the results of this study suggest that prioritizing variety in water depth, pond sizes, and vegetation types at preserves such as the one in this study should facilitate the continued arrival of diverse bird communities

    Small Scale, Big Impact: The Power of Local Food Systems in Repairing Food Literacy and the Consumer-Producer Divide

    Over the past century, the relationship between Americans and their food has undergone a profound transformation as a result of the rise of industrial farming. Modern agriculture and agribusiness have created widespread environmental degradation, depleted food knowledge, and produced a stark disconnect between consumers and the origins of their food. Against this backdrop, this research utilizes surveys and interviews to investigate the role of local food systems in cultivating food literacy among Ohio residents. Findings reveal a significant positive correlation between participation in local food systems and confidence in cooking, growing, and preserving food, frequency in utilizing these skills, and consumer-producer connections. This project demonstrates the exciting potential of local food systems, emphasizes the positive impact of immersing ourselves more deeply in the food system, and reaffirms the critical importance of continuing conversations about food knowledge and practices

    The Coevolution of Humankind and Lake Erie – Past, Present, and Future Interactions

    This Independent Study fosters a dynamic conversation between the communities and stakeholders of Lake Erie, focusing on the cultural evolution, resource exploitation, and conservation practices behind these interactions. This discussion will suggest how to best implement more effective conservation policies in the Lake Erie watershed by examining the importance of the lake to the ecosystem, the relationship between the lake and surrounding communities, and how stakeholder groups propose conservation efforts to the public. The importance of Lake Erie to the regional environment and hydroclimate cannot be understated. Local communities are not only reliant on the lake for food, water, and recreation, but also its role in maintaining the regional climate and ecosystems. Cultural evolution leads to specific resource exploitation to maintain large populations, in this case, often leading to pollutants entering the lake. Human-sourced pollution dates back to Indigenous agriculture, where archeological evaluations of Indigenous sites and their geologic environments suggest that pre-European contact agriculture would have directly caused an increase of sedimentation in Lake Erie. Today, stakeholder groups hold the power to decide the resource exploitation and conservation efforts applied to Lake Erie. Yet often the communities and stakeholders alike feel their efforts fall short of success. The contamination of the Lake Erie watershed greatly affects the surrounding communities, not the stakeholders, and yet the communities are not the ones allotted the power to decide the goals of conservation efforts. Theorist, Carol Carpenter, suggests that without the support and involvement of the communities, implementing effective conservation efforts will not often be successful. This conversation will ideally persuade local stakeholders to conduct policy changes regarding their communication techniques and involvement with the populations living in the Lake Erie watershed. Ultimately encouraging stakeholders to place some of their decision-making power back in the hands of the community members and closing the sociopolitical and socioeconomic gaps that are often so prevalent in conservation today
