Beyond Assumptions: Friendship Maintenance in Neurotypical and Neurodivergent Transgender/Gender Diverse People
No full textThis paper explores the intricate challenges faced by transgender/gender diverse (TGD) and neurodivergent (ND) individuals in maintaining friendships and sheds light on the unique barriers they encounter in maintaining friendships. TGD and ND individuals, facing challenges in obtaining social support and a sense of belonging, contend with distinct obstacles that significantly impact their well-being. I surveyed participants (N = 183) about their friendship maintenance behaviors, perceived social support, and need for relatedness. The current study did not provide support for the notion that neurodiversity would moderate the relationship between friendship maintenance and both perceived social support and sense of belonging (need for relatedness). Overall, this study showed that individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders did not experience diminished perceived social support or sense of belonging. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the social support and sense of belonging experienced by neurodivergent individuals, shedding light not only on external perceptions but also on their own subjective experiences

What has not been investigated is the true effects of this piece of legislation. In this study the true effects of the Dodd-Frank Act are investigated, specifically the effect that Dodd-Frank has had on the quality of mortgage lending. A difference-in-difference model with lagged effects is utilized in which through the use of a “treatment” and “control” group the effects Dodd-Frank on the quality of mortgage lending is highlighted. This study finds that the Dodd-Frank Act on average, has not improved the overall quality of mortgage lending
Teacher’s Perspectives, Barriers, and Training: Exploring Factors in Recognizing and Reporting Child Maltreatment
No full textThis research paper examines the factors that affect teachers’ perceptions of child maltreatment and their ability to recognize and report. My study begins my looking at lack of training, deterrents to reporting, and cultural and socioeconomic status that may affect perceptions child maltreatment. Furthermore, the study draws from Bronfenbrenner\u27s Ecological Systems Theory, Pierre Bourdieu\u27s theory of habitus, and symbolic interactionism. Finally, using an online anonymous survey with likert scale and open-ended questions, I collected data from teachers in Ohio varying from multiple different school districts. I ran cross tabs along with chi-square tests and did a content analysis on the open-ended question to find major themes. My results indicated that there are many different factors that affect teacher perceptions of child maltreatment, years of teaching, economic class, and experiences with physical punishments as a child, although many were unsignificant there were common trends. Although, I wanted to focus on cultural background, due to a lack of diversity I was unable to do so. In addition to this, there were commonalties in barriers faced when reporting. Common themes including fear, lack of support, and information. These themes coincide with those found in the literature review
The Effects of Magnesium on Alcohol Intake and Locomotor Sensitization in Mice
No full textAlcohol use disorder poses a significant societal burden, necessitating research efforts to mitigate its impact on mortality rates. While existing studies have explored magnesium’s effects on alcohol addiction during later stages, limited attention has been given to its potential benefits at earlier phases of alcohol use disorder. This study aimed to investigate whether oral magnesium supplementation could influence alcohol intake in 18 C57BL/6J mice randomly assigned into one of three groups: EH (n=6), EM (n=6), or MH (n=6). The EH group had access to increasing concentrations of ethanol and water, while the EM group had access to ethanol and magnesium (50 g/L of magnesium sulfate in tap water). Finally, the MH group had access to magnesium and water. Following 12 days of voluntary drinking, all mice were given a single intraperitoneal injection of ethanol (20%, 2g/kg) and tested for locomotor sensitization. Contrary to the original hypothesis, magnesium increased 3% ethanol intake. There were no differences between groups in the locomotor sensitization test. Further research is needed to determine optimal magnesium dosages, timing of administration, and underlying mechanisms. These findings contribute to the ongoing exploration of magnesium as a preventive and therapeutic avenue for alcohol dependence and withdrawal
Spartan and Elean Relations during the 5th Century BCE: How Elis Challenged Spartan Hegemony in the Peloponnese
No full textThis paper aims to examine Spartan and Elean relations during the 5th century BCE to extract lessons that are relevant and useful for understanding modern diplomacy. I investigate the methods that Elis used to maintain its independence and identity throughout the 5th century BCE. In my analytical conclusion, I apply the lessons that I will identify to modern situations to the extent that the lessons allow me. Throughout my paper, I trace the history of Elis and Sparta to extract key lessons that materialized into a fall from grace for Elis. To this end, I use historical reasoning and psychological analysis throughout my paper. Additionally, I often cite, translate, and discuss the ancient historians to ensure I am accurately conveying the historical material. I also supplement my argument with secondary sources that clarify concepts that are not explicitly explained by the ancient historians
Unlocking the Potential of Entrepreneurship: The Impacts of Minority Depository Institutions on Disparities in Entrepreneurship Rates Between Black and White Entrepreneurs
No full textIn this study, I will be measuring how the presence of Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs), in a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), can reduce the number of disparities in entrepreneurship and survival rates between Black and White business owners. The purpose of this paper is to expose how a limited number of MDIs contributes to entry barriers for entrepreneurship in the US. Minority Start-Up owners experience a plethora of challenges in operating a business and obtaining accessible credit appears to limit and discourage minority business owners from either starting and/or surviving. MDIs were created to develop to promote financial inclusion and its primary mission is to serve Low and Moderate-Income (LMI) communities by supplying accessible credit to minority households and firms. In this study, I will use crosswalk data, Kauffman Firm Survey, and the FDIC’s Branch Locator to determine whether the presence of an MDI impacts Entrepreneurship and Survival Rates for Black Nascent and experienced Entrepreneurs compared to their counterparts using two Linear Probability Models. In this study, I discovered that the presence of an MDI positively impacts the rate a Black Nascent Entrepreneur starts a business. On the other hand, MDIs does not play a significant role for start-ups surviving within a year of operation. Although the number of MDIs, within a community, does not reflects the success rate of any entrepreneur, this study reveals there are several entrepreneurial gaps that limits minority start-up owner’s ability to start and remain in this venture
Analysis of the Harvesting Trends of Pacific Bluefin Tuna to Determine Sustainability Efforts of the Fishing Industry in Japan
No full textAs sustainability is rising in popularity, so are the open resources the ocean has to offer. This study aims to provide a profile on the evolution and current state of the Pacific Bluefin Tuna fishing industry in Japan. I hypothesize that Japan’s high consumption, harvest, and geographic presence in an area where Pacific Bluefin Tuna spawn will make them a key player in the conservation of the species. I begin by establishing a history of the global industry, the development of new gear and technologies, and the impact that these have had on the wild population of Pacific Bluefin Tuna. This study utilizes a case study methodology using data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan as well as the International Scientific. We compare total harvest weight in metric tons by country, fishery, and prefecture between the years 1970-2020. While the study cannot find direct support for my hypothesis, it did find a potential negative relationship between high harvest years and stock alongside a negative relationship between low stock rates and harvest rates in the following years. Future research should implement more robust statistical analysis to determine the strength of these relationships and make suggestions for future sustainability efforts
Creating an Artificial Opponent for the Game Minotaurus
No full textA.I. opponents have been a fixture of electronic games since the 1950’s. Over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries the technology has evolved to the computer opponents we know today. This paper will cover the implementation of an A.I opponent for the game Minotaurus, a 2-player perfect information dice-based strategy game, using the Minmax algorithm. Within the MonoGame framework, this implementation uses pathfinding and look-ahead to execute advantageous turns, based on Minmax evaluations. Over the course of the game, players seek to move their pieces to a designated end-zone while obstructing and capturing their opponent’s. This paper will detail how this implementation led to an A.I opponent that can make logical moves, operate beyond its explicit instruction and defeat human opponent

No full textUser Interface and User Experience design significantly influences how a user interacts with a piece of software. This paper explores the influence of different design choices on the development of a portfolio website. Scalability, Adaptability and Responsive design principles are explored thought the project along with the fundamental principles of design. The influence of psychology in the design process is also explored upon in this paper. The portfolio website developed in this project incorporates the use of React JS along with the Material UI component library and is responsive across different devices. This portfolio website has potential to grow beyond this first iteration, the implementation of a backend would make it possible to add numerous features to the website and further optimize load times
“All Aboard!”: Brightline’s Impact on Commercial Real Estate in South Florida
No full textThis paper aims to analyze the potential effects of the Brightline passenger rail system on commercial land use in South Florida. Specifically, this paper analyzes how commercial property values change in response to proximity to Brightline stations. A Bid-Rent theoretical framework is developed to model possible outcomes of changes in commercial land values in response to proximity to privately owned inter-city rail systems, like Brightline, by modeling the proximity to Brightline stations’ effects on the firm’s function. Two empirical models are specified using the Hedonic Price Model in order to capture all relevant attributes in determining property value. The models tested to assess the overall South Florida commercial land market preference for proximity to train stations, as well as the South Florida commercial land market preference for proximity to Brightline stations at the junction with Tri-Rail stations. The key findings show that there is a commercial land market preference for firms locating within proximity to Brightline stations. However, with challenges in the empirical model specification and the failure of meeting of post-regression testing expectations, an understanding of the causal relationship between proximity to Brightline Stations and commercial property value remains unclear
