    The Effects of College Athletics on Students with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Comparison of Academic Success, Social Wellbeing, and Anxiety between Off-Season, In-Season, and Non-Athletes

    This paper analyzes non-athletes, in-season athletes, and off-season athletes in college with ADHD regarding their academic success, social-wellbeing, and anxiety/stress. Using an anonymous survey, these three factors were evaluated with three different questionnaires. The survey also assessed ADHD status via a symptomology screening assessment and by self-reporting ADHD diagnoses (or lack thereof). The study had three significant findings: in-season athletes with ADHD had the lowest levels of academic success; team sport athletes had higher academic success scores than athletes that play both an individual sport and a team sport; also, those with ADHD had higher academic success scores than those without ADHD. There were no statistically significant results regarding social wellbeing and anxiety/stress levels. In sum, the results suggest that student-athletes with ADHD perform worse academically when they are in-season. Additionally, students with ADHD and/or symptoms of ADHD perform better academically than those without ADHD nor symptoms of ADHD. Lastly, team sport athletes perform better academically than the athletes that play both an individual and team sport. Future research should be done to see how these results compare to student-athletes competing at the Division I level, how student-athletes with ADHD feel about seeking academic accommodations, and how academic performance changes over the years for student-athletes with ADHD

    On Thinning Ice: A Geoscientific Perspective on the Politics of Resource Exploration in a Changing Arctic

    Climate forecasting predicts that the decline in northern sea ice will render the Central Arctic Ocean fully accessible for shipping and petroleum extraction purposes by mid-century. These international waters present an opportunity for non-Arctic and Arctic nations to compete and collaborate for regional influence. Such prospects remain possible only with the rapid deterioration of our planet’s northernmost cryosphere, a positive feedback loop that is spurring environmentally harmful trends. Still, the notion of an ice-free Arctic has excited the international community for new opportunities: those contingent upon ecosystem collapse and defined by exploitive opportunism. As local states vie for exclusive control of these emerging northern resources, international bodies aim to humble their authority by promoting sustainable legislation to safeguard global common interests. In making the recent changes that are being experienced by the region a matter of global concern, various parties have leveraged the Arctic situation for their own gain. Ironically, these include both international bodies fighting against environmental degradation as well as those transnational corporations and governing powers looking to seize geoeconomic and geopolitical assets. I call this “the problematization of the Far North.” After reviewing the opportunities and obstacles presented to humanity by the loss of northern sea ice, I am forced to concede that our “Arctic problem” is far too complex for any one proposed solution. The convergence of environmental consciousness and resource competition in the region presents a clear conflict of interest for nation-states. It is impossible to balance the needs of all involved stakeholders without contradicting even the most innocent of intentions. We as a species must abandon our neocolonialist ethos and instead implement effective and sustainable legislation distinguished by community-led adaptive policy. How international and regional leaders choose to address the changes in the Arctic will have global repercussions for climate action and geopolitical cooperation. To understand humanity’s role in the Far North, we must remember to consider the larger consequences associated with our proximate gains and treat the great natural forces of our planet with patience and respect. For future generations to be able to meet their needs, it is essential we proceed with a careful balance of priorities and an urgent commitment to the common good

    Characterization of Oxidation-Prone Cysteines in Microbial Thioredoxin Reductases

    The enzyme thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) contributes to cellular oxidant defense and metabolism with its redox partner thioredoxin (Trx). The thioredoxin system is highly conserved across biological domains, but TrxRs evolved convergently into the low molecular weight (LMW) form in microbial and fungal species and the high molecular weight form (HMW) in eukaryotes. Both forms have two active site cysteines that reduce thioredoxin via the formation of reversible disulfide bonds. In addition to the catalytic cysteine, an additional cysteine found near the C-terminus of the protein has shown what we initially thought was a pattern of conservation within Gram-negative bacteria and fungal species. Further explorations into this cysteine indicated that it forms intrasubunit disulfides in the presence of the disulfide donor DTNB, potentially acting as a non-active site redox center within the protein. Here, I test whether other strong oxidants (diamide and hypochlorite) can oxidize different microbial TrxRs, as well as further investigating the patterns of conservation in the bacterial domain. Additionally, we look into potential mechanisms of reduction at this site by either self-reduction or reduction by Trx. After looking further into the evolution of TrxR there was a much broader pattern of conservation across bacterial phyla than cannot easily be explained via a Gram positive/negative delineation. We also found evidence of similar intrasubunit disulfide formation, as seen in Trr1, in different microbial species as well as across the panel of oxidants. Our results thus far indicate that the C-terminal cysteine could potentially act as a regulatory cite. Future work will include mapping disulfide formation by mass spectrometry, looking for oxidation in vivo, and finding potential redox partners that act through the C-terminal cysteine

    The fall Annual Report Edition 2023-24 of Wooster magazine foreshadows the future of a Wooster education based on strengths in forward thinking, innovative academics, and collaborative inquiry. The annual financial review reports on the College’s operating revenues and expenses and highlights the ways donors have endorsed the Wooster education in the past year. Donors like Xiaorui “Ray” Bao ’11 and Dan Griffis ’94 share what compels them to give back to Wooster students and increase the value of their alma mater. Combined support from individual donors, reunion classes, and Wooster’s Women’s Advisory Board honor key figures from Wooster’s history including Dr. Viola Startzman Robertson ’35, medical director from 1956-79 and Vivian Holliday, dean of faculty from 1977-85, through new gifts to support funds in their names. The report also covers the evolution of the Pathways programs, experiential learning, academic programs, and employee engagement, as well as the latest achievements of athletes, faculty, students, Wooster Preschool, and other College news.     A Study on How the Platform TikTok Influences the Youth in 2024

    Among the youth, social media platforms like TikTok have been growing ever more popular around the world. All users have their reasons for engaging with social media, whether for watching others, gaining clout, or even as a leisurely activity to pass the time. The central question guiding this study was how the youths\u27 TikTok usage influenced their lives. I conducted a study in which I interviewed five participants in my college and asked them a series of questions regarding their TikTok usage and how they think the platform influenced their lives. I analyzed the findings and used related scholarships on social media. I have identified three kinds of TikTok users such as the surfer, applicant, and competitor. The surfer spends excessive amounts of time scrolling through the app as a leisurely activity. The applicant uses the app to learn useful pieces of information they can apply in their lives. The competitor used the app to create a career though revenue and viewership. I have found that among the three of them, they face a shortened attention span and excessive time usage on the platform. I found that these negative influences on people appear to be the most common, but I am sure there are other vast negative influences. Also, the platform TikTok can be a source of motivation and knowledge for its users as well
