“Shades of Pemberley”: Transformation and Preservation through Adaptations of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
Since its initial publication over two hundred years ago, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen has been reimagined time and time again to many different ends. Though the field of adaptation studies is well equipped to analyze the story’s journeys to the screen, it has only recently opened itself to new mediums and forms of judgement beyond the fidelity of adaptation to its source. Drawing on these developments, as well as combining a literary and a historical approach, this I.S. analyzes four different twenty-first century rewritings of Pride and Prejudice. Despite adaptation’s tendency to romanticize the past, these four novels—Longbourn by Jo Baker, The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow, Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin, and Pride by Ibi Zoboi—demonstrate its ability to highlight historical tensions and denaturalize the cultural norms of gender, class, and colonialism that exist both within the pages of Austen’s beloved novel and in the story’s larger role as a cultural touchpoint. Adaptations that engage with history in this way can make the classics more accessible to students while also opening the canon to new voices and stories
Toward Demonstrating the Synthetic Utility of 7-substituted-quinolin-2(1H)-ones in Organic Synthesis
The following research attempted to investigate the utility of using 7-substituted-quinolin-2(1H)-ones in synthesis. Quinolinones are a specific class of heterocyclic compounds with many biological uses due to their ability to interact with different targets such as enzymes, DNA, and ion channels. The Martin Lab has used a two-step synthetic method of acylation-cyclization of meta-substituted anilines to prepare quinolinones that specifically have a substituent on the seventh position carbon. The utility of the 7-substituted-quinolin-2(1H)-ones was demonstrated using many different synthetic techniques and reactions that attempted to modify the 7-substituted quinolinone core to form new products. The main compound of use was 7-bromoquinolin-2(1H)-one. The planned synthetic modifications included: creating an analog of an enzyme inhibitor, amination reactions, and a coupling reaction with a natural product. Throughout this study, the OSMI-4 inhibitor analog was successfully synthesized and characterized. However, there were a few issues in other reactions, specifically at the 7-substituted position. The amination reaction had issues with product isolation and the coupling with a natural product had problems in reactivity to form a carboxylic acid. In these studies, the synthesis of 7-bromoquinolinone was successfully scaled up to 2.69 g and 8.07 g of product, while the 7-iodoquinolinone was scaled up to 3.25 g of product. Future work could focus on improving reaction design, such as exploring syntheses of a quinolinone-ellagic acid conjugate, including protecting the amide proton of the quinolinone starting materials to improve access to the requisite Grignard reagent and carboxylic acid for that synthesis, as well as exploring scale-up and purification of other 7-substituted quinolinones
An Animation in a Picture: Creating a short animation from a single image using digital image processing methods
This study aims to show the various digital image processing techniques and howthese methods, when applied at different times and in a specific order, can create an animated scene. This will be accomplished by first understanding digital images and their properties, including color models, pixels and pixel values, and neighborhood relationships. After digital images, various low-level processing methods will be discussed. These low-level methods include simple pixel operations such as brightness and contrast as well as spatial methods like smoothing and sharpening. A closer look into geometric operations and transformations will be essential for understanding the whole picture of these low-level methods. Mid-level processing methods such as segmentation and the 3 types of segmentation will be implemented and researched in order to determine their strengths and weaknesses as well as provide a visual and select the optimal algorithm for the final implementation. Pictures will be created with the help of AI. These ideas will all be implemented in Java to create an interactive software
The Authoritarian Backslide: Democratization and Repression in Transitional Regimes
Democratization and repression maintain a complicated relationship through transitional periods in regimes. In these transitional regimes, does democratization decrease repression? In this paper, I focus on the effects of democratic institutionalization on the reduction of repression, arguing that this relationship exists only in the case where democratic institutionalization has established constraints to the utilization of repression in a regime. I test this theory through a method of difference four-case study focusing on Central America. I review Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, and Costa Rica to better understand the transitional democratization of regimes in Central America. I find that institutionalization is more indicative of improvements in repressive conditions than democratization, congruent with my hypothesis that democratization alone is not sufficient. Ultimately, it is important to better understand processional democratic development, specifically in those regions historically plagued by democratic backslide and unstable transition

Micromouse: End to End implementation of a Competitive Maze-Solving Robot
This project explores the design and implementation of a micromouse, an autonomous mobile robot, to navigate mazes. This work encompasses the development of the micromouse’s hardware components required for a successful micromouse,such as motors, sensors, processors, wheel layouts, vacuum components, and custom printable circuit boards. A full blueprint and description of a functionalmicromouse, with all of its sub-components, is presented. It then covers the creation of a micromouse maze for those with a limited budget. Additionally, it delves into the rules of micromouse competition before discussing the software aspect by examining and implementing various maze-exploration and maze-solving algorithms like the Left Wall Follower, Depth-first Search, Breadth-first Search, Flood Fill, and A* Algorithm. These algorithms were tested in simulation to evaluate their effectiveness in solving mazes. Is Voting From Your Dorm the New Norm: Understanding College Students\u27 Preferred Vote Method
Many scholars have debated the factors that influence individuals to vote by mail instead of in person (e.g., Berinsky, Burns, and Traugott 2001; Bonica et al. 2021; Elul, Freeder, and Grumbach 2017; Plescia, Sevi, and Blais 2021), but few have looked at how college students like to vote. To fill this gap, I propose the following research question: What is the effect of political interest on college students’ preferred vote method? I argue that college students who are highly interested in politics will be less likely to prefer vote-by-mail because it is less rewarding than voting in person. However, if the costs of voting in person are higher, then these students will be more likely to prefer vote-by-mail because of its convenience. To test my hypotheses, I conducted an online survey at a small, private college between November 2023 and January 2024. The results suggest that there is no relationship between political interest and preferred vote method, and the total cost of voting has no effect on this as a conditional variable. However, individual costs associated with being an out-of-state student, not knowing where one’s polling station is, and not having access to a car do appear to influence how college students vote
Our Quest for a New World Order: The Effects of Collective Narcissism and Conspiratorial Belief on Sharing Conspiratorial Headlines
When looking at conspiracy theories, people usually turn to personality traits to understand why individuals believe in them. One of the main gaps when trying to understands at conspiracy theories is looking at the combination of beliefs and personality traits to understand an individual\u27s behaviors. This study looks at the effects of collective narcissism and conspiratorial belief on sharing conspiracy theories online. Within this study, I argue that conspiratorial belief can act as both moderator and mediator to understand its effect of the underlying mechanism between collective narcissism and online interaction with conspiracy theories.
This research study used survey methods to measure a sample of 100 participants on CloudResearch. Afterward, I ran a series of multivariate linear regressions to determine the effects of a conspiratorial belief as both a mediator and a moderator. The multivariate regression showed that conspiratorial belief acts partial mediator. These results indicate that conspiratorial belief can partially explain the relationship between collective narcissism and sharing conspiracy theories online. Another multivariate regression showed that conspiratorial belief was not found to be statistically significant as a moderator. These results show that researchers need to consider multiple variables, not just one trait or another, when researching or trying to understand conspiracy theories. Future research should examine collective narcissism and conspiratorial belief’s effect on in-person engagement with conspiracies or how conspiracy theories are created
