Shipping, Self, and Sexuality: Queer Identity in the World of Fanfiction
The relationship between fanfiction, fandom, and the queer people that they attract has long been studied. One part of this has been the study of the effects of fanfiction on queer people, especially, but not limited to, young people. Due to long personal experience, curiosity and interest in the different experiences of others in the community, and a genuine love and fascination with this topic, this study has examined that relationship in detail. This research looks to examine that relationship in detail, through the following questions: What is the relationship between fanfiction and queer identity formation? To what extent does fanfiction shape the queer identity of the fans? How might their queer identity inform the kind of fanfiction that they engage with? This project will address these questions in detail, beginning with a review of the literature on this topic (split up into two sections: one on queer identity formation, and the other on queer self-advocacy and activism). Next, there is a thorough overview of the theoretical frameworks used throughout this study, and then, a chapter reviewing the methodology employed during the data-gathering process. Finally, the study is concluded with a detailed examination of the major findings, and a brief review of ways that it could be expanded upon for further research

Anatomy of Anguish: Analyzing Martha Graham’s Early Work as Political Assertion
Martha Graham’s modern ballets Chronicle (1936), Immediate Tragedy (1937), and Deep Song (1937) are artistic depictions of the destruction of war and the impacts of fascism in Nazi Germany and Civil War Spain. Through these works, Graham expressed her opposition to fascist politics, and her disapproval of the perpetuation of fascism’s values. Graham was one of the most prolific and influential—and therefore most studied—choreographers of the 20th century, and she is often considered one of the American pioneers of modern dance globally. However, most of the existing scholarship on Graham is biographical or centered on her common themes of gender, sexuality, spirituality, and American identity rather than her political views and actions. This research uses contemporary recordings of these pieces along with critical reviews, letters, notes, and existing scholarship to analyze the movement as historical works within their political, cultural, and artistic contexts. An analysis of Graham’s choreographic style throughout each of these pieces reveals her involvement in a developing conversation at the time about artists as political influencers and American identity on an international scale. To Be Unalive: Examining The Labor of Igbo Girls and the Correlation to A Death of Self
This independent examines the interplay between gender roles, labor, and identity among Igbo women migrating to the U.S., using Bourdieu’s framework of social and cultural capital. It explores how traditional Igbo gender roles, deeply ingrained through early socialization, persist despite migration and exposure to new cultural norms. While migration offers opportunities to challenge and renegotiate these roles, cultural expectations and familial networks often reinforce traditional divisions of labor. Drawing on oral histories and literature, the research reveals the resilience of Igbo women as they navigate dual expectations and adapt to new environments. It highlights the slow process of gender role transformation and calls for policies promoting gender equality in both home and host countries
Diary of a Mermaid: An Exploratory Study of Coral Bleaching and Benthic Composition of Five Coral Reef Sites in Guna Yala, Panamá
Coral reefs are experiencing many environmental stressors due to anthropogenic climate change. The effects of environmental stressors, such as high sea surface temperatures, can lead to coral bleaching and mortality that result in unprecedented assemblage shifts and changes in algae abundance. To aid recovery in these habitats, it is important to implement management and monitoring projects. The status of coral bleaching and benthic composition across five reefs in the Nargana region of Guna Yala, Panama was recorded using the point count method to (1) Compare coral assemblage composition between reefs, (2) Observe coral species abundance and the abundance of benthic categories and, (3) Observe coral bleaching cover. Statistical analysis revealed differences in coral assemblage composition between the five reef sites, with some sites having very few or no reef-building species. In general, reef-building species experienced higher proportions of bleaching in comparison to other coral species. Therefore, processes of erosion and bleaching mortality may be occurring faster than coral reef assemblages can restore themselves. Current abundance and bleaching data were then compared to previous research conducted in Guna Yala, with the goal of illuminating long-term ecological trends. These comparisons show that algae cover has remained higher than live coral cover, and that coral species abundance has not recovered since mass bleaching events began occurring in the 1980s
I Identified My Grandma\u27s Voice Disorder and Now I’m Here: An Examination Of Speech-Language Pathologists’ Treatment and Decision-making in Therapy for Vocal Polyps
Vocal polyps are a functional voice disorder that can affect the phonatory patterns of the speaker. The broad purpose of this study was to investigate and examine speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs’) diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for patients with a vocal polyp. More specifically, I examined speech-language pathologists’ decision-making process regarding patient evaluation, treatment selection, timing of implementation, and perceptions of the effectiveness of different treatment techniques. A total of 26 SLPs completed a 35-question online survey created by the researcher and was distributed to relative groups.
The results of this study suggest that limiting caffeine intake is less important when compared to other vocal hygiene education topics. The results of this study indicate that SLPs consider both the presence of a bilateral/contralateral polyp and the size of the polyp as more influential to the treatment selection process than both the attachment style and the color of the polyp. The major conclusions of this study are that SLPs differ in their opinion on how influential certain aspects of treatment are to their decision-making process, there are differences on how the morphological characteristics of a vocal polyp contribute to an SLPs’ selection of therapeutic techniques, and SLPs consider vocal hygiene education to be an important part of treatment for patients with a vocal polyp
How Do Military Alliances Affect the Bilateral Trade Volume Between Allied Nations?
In this paper I explore the relationship between military alliances and international trade, specifically, how do military alliances affect the total trade volume between trading nations who are also allies. I hypothesize that military alliances increase the volume of trade between allied nations as military alliances reduce the frictions and barriers on trade, increasing the volume of trade between allied nations. I explore this relationship in the context of the gravity model of international trade and I test my hypothesis with a series of regression estimations based on a large (~540k observations) dynamic time-series dataset. Through estimating the total volume of trade between pairs of countries based on their military alliance status and GDP per capita of each country, I find that military alliances do indeed increase the total volume of bilateral trade between allied nations
The Impact of Political Instability on Nepal\u27s Economic Development
The relationship between political instability and economic growth has been extensively discussed, with scholars identifying instability as a critical barrier to sustainable economic development. This study aims to examine how political instability impacts Nepal’s economic development by disrupting governance, deterring investment, and weakening institutional effectiveness. This study incorporates extensive political and economic history of Nepal, building the foundation for the theoretical framework comprising the IS-LM Model for short-term macroeconomic analysis and the Solow Growth Model integrated with a Cobb-Douglas Production Function for long-term structural assessment. The research provides comprehensive insights into the economic repercussions of political volatility in the context of Nepal.
Furthermore, the empirical analysis, employing fixed-effects panel regression using World Bank and Polity IV datasets (1996–2023), confirms that political stability significantly enhances investment growth and economic resilience in Nepal. In contrast, traditional economic variables such as inflation and trade openness demonstrated limited predictive significance, highlighting governance and institutional stability as paramount to economic progress. Additionally, comparative analysis within the South Asian context further validates these findings, emphasizing effective governance over mere regime durability.
Given these findings, the study recommends institutional reforms, enhanced governance mechanisms, and long-term policy consistency as essential strategies for fostering sustainable economic development in Nepal. By addressing governance weaknesses and promoting political stability, Nepal can potentially overcome its economic stagnation, reduce dependency on remittances and foreign aid, and stimulate diversified economic growth
Movement and Well-being: Through Dance and Non-Dance Activities in College Students
Previous research has found benefits of movement and physical activity on well-being. One type of movement that has been studied to determine how the mind body connection works for well-being is dance. The current study compares the effects of dances and non-dance activities on positive well-being, psychological distress, and fatigue within a sample of college students (n = 107). Participants in the current study completed movement in one of four independent groups. First, participants either danced or completed a non-dance movement. Second, participants completed their movement either in a social setting or individually. The surveys used were the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale (SEES) and the Motives for Physical Activities Measure (MPAM-R). All participants completed the SEES both before and after their movement of choice. Primary analyses compared participants who danced to participants who completed non-dance movement. Results indicated a benefit of dance compared to non-dance movement on all three psychological outcomes (i.e., positive well-being, psychological distress, and fatigue). Secondary ANOVA analyses indicated specific psychological benefits for participants in the group dance condition, relative to the other three experimental conditions. That is, findings suggested stronger benefits for dance in a group setting over all other conditions in terms of positive well-being, psychological distress and fatigue. Current results provide evidence that movement, and dance specifically, can lead to mental benefits such as increased positive well-being, decreased psychological distress, and decreased fatigue in college students
Once Upon a Time: Using Authentic Texts to Improve Student Learning in a Second Language Classroom
My Independent Study is a culmination of all of the work that I have completed for the Department of Education and the Department of French and Francophone Studies to earn a Multi-Age (prek-12) French Teaching License in the state of Ohio. This project seeks to define the benefits of using authentic texts in the classroom. My first chapter serves as a portfolio that demonstrates my expertise in the field of education. It includes my Teaching Philosophy that details my personal beliefs on the best ways to educate students, my résumé, and a summary of all of my experiences of educating students both inside and outside of the classroom. My second chapter explores theory that defines student engagement, authentic texts, and the different skill levels for language learners. With this theory, I establish the key traits that a teacher should look for in an authentic text for the desired skill level in order to make learning as engaging as possible. I then make four lesson plans using four different authentic texts as a concrete example of how a teacher could incorporate authentic texts in the classroom to aid academic learning. My final chapter details and analyzes the research project that I conducted for the Education Department as a requirement of my Student Teaching. This chapter will explore how authentic texts can be implemented in the classroom to help improve students’ social and emotional learning.
Mon étude indépendante est un aboutissement de tout le travail que je faisais pour le département d’éducation et le département de français et les études francophonies afin de recevoir une licence d’enseignement français pour les niveaux entre maternelle et lycée en Ohio. Ce projet définira les bénéfices d’utiliser des textes authentiques dans la salle de classe. Mon premier chapitre est un portfolio qui montre mon expertise dans le domaine de l’éducation. Il inclut ma Philosophie de l’enseignement, qui expose en détail mes convictions sur la manière d’enseigner, mon CV, et un résumé de toutes mes expériences dans l’enseignement. Mon deuxième chapitre explorera la théorie qui définit l’engagement des élèves, les textes authentiques, et les niveaux de compétences pour apprendre une nouvelle langue. Avec cette théorie, j’établirai les traits clés qu’un professeur doit rechercher dans un texte authentique, en fonction du niveau de compétence visé afin de favoriser un apprentissage actif/engagé. Puis, je créerai quatre plans de cours avec quatre textes authentiques comme exemples concrets de la manière dont un enseignant peut les incorporer dans la salle de classe afin d’améliorer l’apprentissage académique. Mon troisième chapitre présentera et analysera le projet de recherche requis par Département d’Éducation pour obtenir une licence d’enseignement. Ce chapitre explorera comment les textes authentiques peuvent être mis en œuvre dans la salle de classe afin d’améliorer l’apprentissage social et émotionnel
