WELCOME TO
DEAN WILLIS P. WHICHARD
NORMAN ADRIAN WIGGINS,
PROFESSOR OF LAW AND PRESIDENT OF CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY
More than a quarter century ago, I became convinced that Wil-
lis P. Whichard had the character, temperament, and intellectual
capacity to be a great teacher of the law. Indeed, had we been
successful in our efforts to bring him to our faculty, he would,
today, be one of the Nation's outstanding teachers and adminis-
trators in legal education.
Dean Whichard's delay in arriving at this point in his already
outstanding career gave him a unique opportunity to gain knowl-
edge and experience from his service in both houses of the North
Carolina Legislature and on both the North Carolina Courts of
Appeals and the Supreme Court of North Carolina. Thus, Dean
Whichard comes to his present position prepared to render exem-
plary service. In addition, Dean Whichard is a long-time member
of the Baptist Faith and understands the aspirations and needs of
the Baptist people of North Carolina for a School of Law where
academic achievement and Christian commitment go hand in
hand.
It is a joy to welcome Dean Whichard to his new post of service
as Dean of the Law School. As he does so, he comes to this posi-
tion with the complete confidence and full support of the faculty,
staff and students of the University, the Presidential Board of
Advisors, the Board of Trustees, alumni and friends.

A TRIBUTE TO DEAN WILLIS P. WHICHARD
I remember my excitement when I found Dean Whichard's letter
submitting his application for the deanship at Campbell. As a member
of the Dean Search Committee, I had spent a long evening reading
through dozens of resumes before I reached the last entry in the
notebook. When I finally reached then-Justice Whichard's resume, I
excitedly told my husband, "We've got the best candidate-now we just
need to convince him to come."
I first met Dean Whichard in the early 1980s when I was speaking
to a legislative committee on behalf of my legal services clients. Sev-
eral of my clients testified before his committee. He was the first com-
mittee member to understand the proposed bill, and he was the most
gracious of all the senators in his kindness to my elderly clients.
When I saw his application for Dean, I knew we had a candidate with a
brilliant legal mind and a caring heart.
Seven years later, I look back and realize how blessed we have
been to have had Bill Whichard as our Dean.
One of my early memories of his deanship is a University faculty
dinner at Marshbanks Dining Hall shortly after the announcement that
he was the new Dean. He asked me to sit with him so that I could
introduce him to members of his new University community. The real-
ity was that we almost didn't make it to our seats because he stopped
to greet dozens of people he knew as we entered the dining room. He
seemed to know everyone! I soon learned that our new Dean brought
a broad knowledge of North Carolina and its people to his new job.
He also brought a willingness to listen. Early in his deanship he
held the first of many "Conversations with the Dean." He invited stu-
dents to come to an open meeting to share their concerns about the
Law School. I remember the excitement among the students when
they realized their Dean truly wanted to hear from them. He took notes
and reported back to them on how he was able to implement their
suggestions. Throughout his tenure as Dean, Dean Whichard has con-
tinued to seek input from the student community.
In addition, he understood that not every student feels comforta-
ble speaking out in a public forum. He established the "Committee on
the Community" to provide a way for any member of the Law School
community to bring a concern before this small committee whose
members could listen and help to solve the problems presented.

One former Campbell University Student Bar Association Presi-
dent shared with me her experience with Dean Whichard's interest in
listening to the concerns of students. She said she was working in a
large law firm for the summer with students from several other law
schools when she received a telephone call from Dean Whichard solic-
iting our Student Bar Association's opinion on a matter. The other law
students were astounded that a law school dean actually called a stu-
dent and asked for input. They had had very different experiences
with their own deans.
Throughout his deanship, Dean Whichard has maintained an
open-door policy allowing any student or faculty or staff member to
meet with him without a formal appointment. His humility and his
much-deserved reputation for keeping confidences have guaranteed a
steady stream of visitors. He has a way of communicating his concern
not only for how the information will affect the Law School, but also
how it will affect the person who is sharing the information.
Dean Whichard has been a supportive colleague to the faculty. He
has encouraged us to write and has raised money to reward faculty
members who publish significant articles in their fields of expertise.
While working long hours as Dean, he has also found time to write a
book and teach a course at the Law School each semester.
Dean Whichard's grace under pressure has been a model for all of
us. We first saw it when he was meeting with the faculty during the
interview process. Halfway through the interviews, he received word
that his ninety-six-year-old mother had passed away. Although he cer-
tainly grieved her passing, he decided to go forward with the inter-
views, commenting that his mother would have encouraged him to
continue. We had another opportunity to see his grace under pressure
during his inauguration as Dean. Hurricane Floyd roared through the
Carolinas during the luncheon following Dean Whichard's induction
as Dean. He did not allow the weather to distract him during his
speech. However, at the end of the speech, he announced that classes
were cancelled for the rest of the day and encouraged everyone to get
home as quickly as possible. His calm during the storm served as a
model for all of us.
Dean Whichard has a keen ability for the use of language in both
the spoken and written form. I remember a faculty-staff dinner early
in his deanship when he said grace before the meal was served. My
husband was so struck by the eloquence of the blessing that he asked
Dean Whichard for a copy of the prayer. Dean Whichard had no writ-
ten copy to share because the prayer had been from his heart.

We as a law school community have been blessed with Dean
Whichard's willingness to share his heart for the last seven years. We
will truly miss him.

Dedication to Professor Charles C. Lewis 
It is my great honor and privilege to recognize Professor Charles C. 
Lewis on his retirement from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law 
at Campbell University after a long and rewarding career.  Professor 
Lewis has dedicated himself to our law school and its students.  For this, 
we thank him. 
Professor Lewis graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Washington & Lee 
University in Lexington, Virginia.  Following graduation, Professor Lew-
is took an associate position with the law firm Tiffany & Tiffany in War-
renton, Virginia.  After serving as an associate for two years, he was 
elected partner and the firm became Tiffany, Tiffany & Lewis. 
After seven years practicing law in Virginia, Professor Lewis joined 
the Campbell Law faculty in 1978, the year following my own arrival.  
The circumstances surrounding his arrival are quite remarkable.  The of-
fer was made by then Dean Leary Davis and accepted, in UCC fashion, 
on the porch of our house during a St. Patrick’s Day party.  It is not gen-
erally known, but he was also offered a professorship at Mississippi Col-
lege School of Law—an offer that resulted from a mistaken interview.  
The search committee at Mississippi College School of Law had deter-
mined that no one in their pool of the applicants had sufficient teaching 
experience and they were looking for experienced teachers.  Despite 
making this determination, they let him interview because he had al-
ready been invited.  This whole story is related in a recently published 
history of Mississippi College Law School written by the then Dean.  Her 
comments on Professor Lewis and the impression he made both as a per-
son as well as a potential faculty member are remarkable.  The faculty 
search committee was so impressed by him that, despite their need for 
experienced professors, they offered him a position.  Fortunately for us 
he had already by then agreed to come join the new and untried law 
school in Buies Creek, North Carolina. 
Professor Lewis arrived, as I did, very raw as to the teaching of law.  
But our founding Dean, Leary Davis, was very adept at teaching begin-

ners how to swim, and Professor Lewis’ education began forthwith.  He 
foolishly suggested to Dean Davis that legal research and writing should 
not, at Campbell, be a Cinderella subject taught by adjuncts or whoever 
was available, as it was in many places.  Rather, Professor Lewis thought 
it should be a flagship course comparable to our Trial Advocacy pro-
gram.  This foolish suggestion to Dean Davis promptly landed him the 
responsibility of teaching this course his first four years at Campbell.  
Four years after his arrival in Buies Creek, he was sent to audit a sum-
mer course on the Uniform Commercial Code and designated to teach it 
in the fall.  The rest is history.   
Professor Lewis’ teaching method, to memorize the material and in-
struct without the use of notes, requires very intensive preparation.  Un-
like most, I know the level of preparation employed in his teaching me-
thod because he has served as my chauffeur since the law school’s move 
to Raleigh in the fall of 2009.  He uses our commute every morning, not 
to solve the problems of the world, but to rehearse his lecture and pres-
entation.  I should be able to teach the course myself by now, but unfor-
tunately I have forgotten the previous day’s material by the next morn-
ing—I hope the countless students have done better over the past thirty-
four years!  Professor Lewis also developed and nurtured a rigorous con-
tract planning course, which he conducts by running a law office with 
himself as the senior partner.  This method has received numerous acco-
lades from his colleagues, peers and most importantly, the students who 
act as his junior associates in contract planning. 
Professor Lewis’ career has also been highlighted with publications.  
He has authored countless law review articles and several books, includ-
ing Hawkland’s Uniform Commercial Code Series (Article 9), which he co-
authored with Professor Richard Lord, and North Carolina Security Inter-
ests.  During his long tenure on the faculty, Professor Lewis has also 
been recognized and awarded for his research and scholarship: he was 
the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Research in 1991 and in 2005.  
Professor Lewis has also served for over 20 years on the North Carolina 
General Statutes Commission, a non-standing committee charged with 
the responsibility of advising the General Assembly on suggested up-
dates and revisions to the North Carolina General Statutes.  He is pre-
sently serving as Chair of the Commission. 
Finally, Professor Lewis is a most willing work horse.  His willing-
ness and diligence has earned him the nickname Mr. Reliable.  These 
attributes also resulted in him contributing his time and expertise to 
numerous committees at Campbell Law—he served as the secretary of 
two dean search committees and chair of the student admissions com-
mittee.  In fact, whenever there is an additional chore to be handed out,

his name appears high, if not first, on the list.  His finest contribution to 
the law school is himself, with his quiet but very real faith.  He bespeaks 
what he is, and thereby sets the tone for his colleagues and his students. 
Professor Lewis will be sorely missed, not least by me.  We wish 
him many years of enjoyment in a busy retirement.  He is planning all 
sorts of visits to civil war—my title, not his—battlegrounds, and is also 
planning on doing all the reading that his intensive class preparation me-
thods rendered impossible.  It all sounds very boring to me, but every-
one has his or her own way of going mad, and we wish him joy of his.  
His presence at Campbell Law was beloved for thirty-four years and his 
wife, Jean, will be glad to see a little more of him, especially as she hopes 
that his casebooks and codes will gather dust as he will not always have 
his nose stuck in them.
