“Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now, you fucking stupid bastard!” Hegemonic Masculinity in Slasher Films
This thesis aims to analyze and address the prevalence of hegemonic masculinity in the slasher subgenre of horror films. The research consisted of a content analysis of what the internet deemed the ‘best’ ten slasher films of all time. The content analysis was based upon R.W. Connell’s (2005) theory of hegemonic masculinity which stated the existence of hierarchical standards for masculinity that men are expected to achieve. Hegemonic masculinity was categorized into four themes. The themes were sexist ideology, sexual behavior, and physical and emotional violence. The research indicated that emotional violence occurred at the highest rate among the sample of slasher films, at 44.3% of all four themes at 729 total counted instances. The results demonstrate that hegemonic masculinity exists past a principle of pure physical subordination, but instead in a setting where subordination happens in a more subtle fashion through emotional violence
The Positive Effects of Medical Cannabinoids on the Dysregulated Endocannabinoid System in Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability. The symptoms include a lack of social skills, a need for repetitive patterns of life, difficulty in communication, speaking deficits and numerous other symptoms. While the specific cause is unknown, there is much research being done on mechanisms including dysregulations of the immune system, endocannabinoid system, and overall brain (Nez Govorova 2021, Pol 2021). The Endocannabinoid system is a recently discovered branch of the nervous system composed of endocannabinoids which are produced naturally in the body; lipid-based neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) and cannabinoid receptor proteins that are expressed throughout the central nervous system but also found in the lungs, liver, kidneys, and immune system. It regulates homeostasis of the central and peripheral mechanisms of food intake, lipids synthesis and metabolism in muscle cells (Alexandre 2019, Dasran 2022, Su 2021, Finn 2102). Endogenous Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that are produced by the body and act on cannabinoid receptors and alter neurotransmitter release and/or activity in the endocannabinoid system in the brain. Exogenous Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are extracted from the cannabis plant. CBD has a relaxing effect and THC has a psychoactive, euphoric effect. It has been found that patients with Autism have a lower CB1 receptor expression which releases neurotransmitters as their brain is not releasing enough endogenous cannabinoids to bind to CB1 receptors and results in a lack of homeostasis. This thesis will explore the Endocannabinoid system and target the receptors using mixtures of cannabinoids to alleviate symptoms and improve the overall life for Autistic Spectrum Disorder Patients. Current investigations explore multiple mouse models and use different cannabinoids to treat ASD-like symptoms including CBDV, CBD and THC. Using CBDV in VPA mouse models was found to reduce the symptoms of ASD including excessive grooming time and increased sociability (Zamberletti 2019). These help to decrease repetitive behavior and increase social interactions which were dysregulated in ASD models. Mouse studies have shown that the benefits of a tincture of CBD and THC with a low ratio of THC are significant, including regulating CB1 receptors, eliminating symptoms of ASD for ASD patients (Poleg 2021). In human studies there was a total alleviation of epilepsy for ASD patients with use of CBD:THC mixture and a decrease of at least one or more symptoms in each patient (Fleury-Teixeria, 2019)
Developing a Web-Based System for Remote Collection and Analysis of Vehicle Electrical Systems Over CANBus Using Carloop
Our program collects vehicle data using an OBD-II device called Carloop that is plugged into the vehicle\u27s diagnostic port. The device executes our code which then communicates with the vehicle\u27s onboard computer to collect data such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, fuel level, and other diagnostic information. This data is then sent over WiFi to Particle’s Cloud, which is a platform for managing IoT devices.
Integrations set up on Particle take care of sending data to our InfluxDB Database, which is hosted on our own cloud-based machine. InfluxDB is a high-performance time-series database that is optimized for storing and querying large amounts of time-stamped data. We chose InfluxDB because it is well-suited for storing the real-time data generated by our program.
We then use another service on the same cloud machine, Grafana, to visualize our data. Grafana is an open-source platform for creating interactive dashboards and visualizations. We use Grafana to create custom dashboards that display real-time vehicle data in an easy-to-understand format.
Overall, our program allows us to collect, store, and visualize real-time vehicle data using Carloop, Particles Cloud, InfluxDB, and Grafana. This allows us to monitor the performance and health of our vehicles in real-time, and make data-driven decisions for any vehicle
Management of Opioid Use Disorder in Primary Care
The prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) in the United States, and worldwide, has drastically increased in the span of 2-3 years. OUD is considered chronic condition and as such requires routine care over a lifetime. This makes OUD patients excellent candidates to be managed by primary care providers (PCPs). This article discusses the various barriers to treatment of OUD in a primary care setting as well methods and models that aim to mitigate these barriers. We will also review how to take a detailed assessment of an OUD patient, mainstays of medication assisted treatment (MAT), and management of side effects and complications in a primary care setting
Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) and Mosquito Larvae on Invasive Mosquito Egg-Laying Behavior
Invasive Aedes mosquitoes, including Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) and Asian bush mosquitoes (Aedes japonicus), oviposit eggs in natural and artificial sites containing stagnant water. Aedes species exhibit versatility in novel ecological environments, including flexibility in oviposition site selection and overall habitat conditions, demonstrating their continued pertinence in human society. I examined the effects of the biopesticide BTI and Aedes larvae on oviposition habitat selection in Aedes albopictus and Aedes japonicus mosquitoes by observing the number of eggs oviposited. A total of 6552 and 1362 eggs were collected in experiments one and two, respectively. Females consistently avoided BTI-containing treatments compared to treatments lacking the toxicant. Furthermore, results suggest that Aedes oviposition may be influenced by conspecific larvae, as more eggs were oviposited in treatments with Aedes larvae than those without conspecifics. Although previous studies are ambiguous about the role of BTI in oviposition site determination, BTI appears to be a less viable biocontrol agent as females avoid it when laying eggs since it induces larval mortality. The impact of conspecifics is a novel method to potentially lure oviposition to locations containing biopesticides that requires further investigation. Understanding the underlying mechanisms that impact Aedes oviposition habitat selection is critical to discovering targeted treatments that entice oviposition and promote larval mortality. As prevalent vectors of several debilitating illnesses and diseases, managing invasive mosquito populations will reduce their negative implications on global public health

Acute otitis media (AOM) is one the the most common condition that affects the pediatric population. AOM place burden on affected children, caregivers, the healthcare system, and also contributes to antibiotic resistance. In many cases, AOM is not just a one-time occurrence and is the most common reason that kids receive oral antibiotics and undergo surgery. Relative to the number of articles available, there is a large gap in the research that does not thoroughly address recurrent AOM (rAOM) and the importance of its management and prevention. Therefore, the goal of this poster is to discuss different modalities used to treat and prevent rAOM such as expectant management, antibiotic management, tympanostomy tubes, and antibiotic prophylaxis

This CME article was written to acknowledge a deficiency in the breadth of research surrounding the treatment of depression in patients with cancer diagnoses. Patients with cancer are prescribed antidepressants at lower rates than the general population, and research suggests they are not as effective. Patients with depression experience physiologic processes that can create favorable conditions for their cancer. These patients also have a higher risk of mortality than cancer patients without depression. The approach to treating depression with cancer accompanying lacks standardization and high quality evidence, but promising effects have been seen in physical exercise programs, meditation, and mindfulness based therapies
Non-Motor Symptoms of Parkinson\u27s Disease: Early Diagnosis and Adequate Treatment of Gastrointestinal and Olfactory Dysfunction
The non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) are extremely prevalent for the majority of individuals with PD. Nearly 90% of these individuals experience GI dysfunction and 90% harbor significant olfactory dysfunction. Both GI and olfactory dysfunction are often seen years before the onset of motor symptoms, during the prodromal phase, and continue to worsen throughout the disease course, yet are often under-treated. This article emphasizes how clinicians can better serve patients with PD by recognizing these early symptoms, potentially before motor symptoms manifest, and treating them appropriately
Inpatient management of an intravenous drug user with tetanus
Tetanus is rare in the United States now due to the tetanus vaccine but there is still the potential too see patients with tetanus. IV drug users, neonates, and geriatric populations are at an increased risk of developing tetanus. Tetanus is caused by Clostridium tetani, a spore forming and exotoxin releasing anaerobic bacteria. The symptoms of tetanus are caused by the exotoxin tetanospasmin which inhibits the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters, leading to sustained neuronal stimulation. The classic symptoms of tetanus are lockjaw (trismus), neck stiffness, back arching, and fever. Patients can be febrile, tachycardic, tachypneic, and hypertensive on exam. The diagnosis of tetanus is clinical. The treatment of tetanus includes neutralization of unbound toxin with human tetanus immunoglobulin, treatment of infection with metronidazole, and Tdap vaccine administration. Muscle contractions are treated benzodiazepines with diazepine being most effective and autonomic instability is treated with magnesium sulfate. Patients with tetanus should be admitted to the ICU for close monitoring because mechanical ventilation is often needed. If a healthcare provider suspects tetanus, the patient should be treated immediately to help increased chance of survival
A guide to treatment options for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS): prioritizing patient preference and personal risk tolerance
The purpose of this article is to provide an outline of various treatment options for DCIS. For patients diagnosed with DCIS, selecting a treatment plan that is right for them can be challenging. As clinicians, we must provide patients with up-to-date clinical information while considering individuals\u27 unique needs. Offering clinicians this critical assessment of current management plans will allow clinicians to be better equipped to help patients with complex decision-making. To date, there are few articles offering a side-by-side comparison of management options with the risks and benefits of each. This article intends to fill this gap and provide updates on the future direction of DCIS management
