British Populism: Ideals over the Individual
Over the course of the last decade or so, a wave of populism - especially of the right-wing type - has crashed upon many democratic countries across the globe. Through this wave, sitting governments have been ousted, the direction of policy has been turned around completely, and to this day, debates about the future of democracy continue in each of them. So too was the United Kingdom hit by this wave. A boiling of right-wing resentment of David Cameron led him to call a referendum on British membership in the European Union to placate the United Kingdom Independence Party in 2015. The narrow victory of the referendum the following year was the catalyst for what is nearing a decade of political turmoil in the country. There is just one difference compared to the rest of the world - the driving force behind this wave was policy, not a person. While Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage certainly took advantage and gave a voice to this policy, “Brexit” is the key to understanding British Populism in its current form. So it must be asked - what does it mean for British politics, and British populism as a whole that its tendencies fail to unify itself around a single leader? Is it better for a movement to hold itself to an idea (or ideas) rather than a person
Screening for Psychological Disorders in Spinal Cord Injury after Trauma in Adults
Adults with spinal cord injury present with varying degrees of injury due to trauma, causing deficits that can have significant effects on a patient’s mental health in the acute setting, throughout recovery, and for the rest of their lives. While a clinician’s main priority is the management of the patient’s physical condition, they should also be able to identify risk factors for mental health concerns. Providers have an opportunity to initiate early intervention and education with their patients to support them through the psychosocial challenges they may face with new traumatic injury and rehabilitation.
This article highlights risk factors and potential diagnoses to remember when evaluating spinal cord injury patients. Additionally, this article cites relevant research supporting the benefits of early intervention to treat post-traumatic mental health concerns, demonstrating improved recovery outcomes. Finally, this article provides recommendations for steps that clinicians can take to identify and support patients with mental health concerns
Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Stress and Performance in Students: Best Interventions
Sleep is an essential part of physical and mental well-being, yet, many individuals underestimate its importance.1,2,4 Sleep deprivation can lead to a variety of detriments including memory loss, disorganized thinking, and mood changes.3,6,7 Because of this, academic performance can be directly impaired as well, which further perpetuates a vicious cycle of sleep deprivation and increasing stress.8 Interventions to help improve sleep include adequate sleep hygiene, appropriate physical exercise, lifestyle changes, practicing mindfulness, and using pharmaceutical aids. Providers must continue to address this common issue among patients as it truly impacts various aspects of life and follow good practices themselves
Postconcussion Symptoms: Approach to Clinical Assessment, Classification, and Treatment
The general lack of consensus regarding the diagnosis of postconcussion syndrome has led to confusion among medical providers. Recent controversy regarding the condition has led to conceptual shift toward treating individual symptom presentation rather than treating a condition in and of itself. Lack of evidence surrounding assessment and treatment guidelines leaves opportunity for misdiagnosis or improper treatment and may potentially prolong symptoms. Postconcussion symptoms can place a significant burden on the patient, whether manifesting as difficulty with daily activities, reduced ability to work, decreased time spent with loved ones, or socioeconomic struggles. Patients often report feeling lonely and have difficulty coping with the effects of their injury. Having a better understanding of assessment and management of postconcussion symptoms can lead to improved physical, psychological, and emotional outcomes
Understanding and Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy
Vaccine hesitancy poses a significant global health concern and is becoming more prevalent in countries around the world. This paper delves into the complex phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy, aiming to summarize the major underlying causes, as well as the best approach to discussing vaccination with a hesitant patient. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, this study identifies several key factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy, including risk-benefit, lack of knowledge, and cultural or religious issues. In order for providers to feel confident discussing vaccination with hesitant patients, they must first understand the rationale that leads to hesitancy. Building up on this understanding, this paper then discusses strategies for approaching a conversation with a vaccine hesitant patient. Identifying each patient\u27s specific rationale and addressing it head on with relevant evidence-based information is crucial when discussing vaccination. Ending by confidently recommending vaccination can build patient confidence in both their provider as well as the vaccines offered to them. This paper aims to empower providers to feel confident discussing vaccination with hesitant patients by providing them with both the background and the relevant tools. Through direct patient interactions, providers can assist in combating the public health threat posed by vaccine hesitancy
CME: PCOS Diagnostic Criteria
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal imbalance that can affect females of reproductive ages and is described as women having high androgen levels, irregular menstrual cycles, and small cysts on one or both ovaries. PCOS is difficult to accurately diagnose since the diagnostic criteria are vague and the disease falls on a wide spectrum of symptoms, leaving women underdiagnosed. Previous research has shown marked improvement in the diagnostic criteria for PCOS over the years. However, due to the vagueness in symptoms, most of the criteria has been created through expert opinion based on subjective data vs objective data. Furthermore, there is still debate on the best diagnostic criteria, causing confusion amongst providers. Furthermore, primary care providers refer patients to specialists for diagnosis because they are not confident in their ability to accurately diagnose and treat PCOS. With the growing amount of PA providers filling the need in primary care, this article is designed to keep providers informed about the most up-to-date evidence-based diagnostic criteria for PCOS to increase timely diagnosis, initiate early intervention, and reduce long term health outcomes
Judicial Independence: An Important Yet Fragile Concept Needed for the Democracy of the United States
My thesis explores the processes by which jurists are appointed to the bench to various State Supreme Courts through several selection methods. I delve deep into the extensive and intricate history surrounding judicial independence as an institutional concept, which has caused signs of concern for many legal and institutional scholars. My research aims to address the question: To what extent do the methods and mechanisms intended to safeguard judicial independence effectively fulfill their purpose? To answer this question, I use a pattern matching method to analyze a selection of six summary judgment cases–chosen randomly–from each state. Three cases where the plaintiff is an individual and three where the plaintiff is a corporation; during the years 2012-2022, spanning across three presidencies–Obama, Trump, and Biden. I employ a pattern matching approach, focusing on state supreme court judicial summary judgments from New Jersey, Oklahoma, Washington, South Carolina, and Illinois
