    TOMAŽ ŠALAMUN (1941–2014) published more than fifty books of poetry in Slovenia. Translated into over twenty-five languages, his poetry received numerous awards, including the Jenko Prize, the Prešeren Prize, the European Prize for Poetry, and the Mladost Prize. BRIAN HENRY is the author of eleven books of poetry and the recent prose book Things Are Completely Simple: Poetry and Translation (Parlor, 2022).     A new theory and methodology for the application of computer vision methods to the computational analysis of collected, digitized visual materials, called “distant viewing.” Distant Viewing: Computational Exploration of Digital Images presents a new theory and methodology for the computational analysis of digital images, offering a lively, constructive critique of computer vision that you can actually use. What does it mean to say that computer vision “understands” visual inputs? Annotations never capture a whole image. The way digital images convey information requires what researchers Taylor Arnold and Lauren Tilton call “distant viewing”—a play on the well-known term “distant reading” from computational literary analysis. Recognizing computer vision\u27s limitations, Arnold and Tilton\u27s spirited examination makes the technical exciting by applying distant viewing to the sitcoms Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie, movie posters and other popular forms of advertising, and Dorothea Lange\u27s photography.     Education and Public Support for COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

    Governments around the world have adopted many mitigation strategies to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Public support for these strategies varies widely. In this visualization the authors examine whether college education might play a role in support for various COVID-19 mitigation strategies. To do so, they leverage original data from surveys conducted across six countries. The authors find that the association between education and support for COVID-19 restrictions varies considerably in direction, both by restriction type and by country. Given this finding, in many contexts, the educational status of the intended audience should be considered in how public health messaging campaigns are developed and targeted

    Managing material shortages in project supply chains: Inventories, time buffers, and supplier flexibility

    We consider a two‐stage project supply chain with a downstream project firm producing an engineer‐to‐order (ETO) complex product or a make‐to‐order (MTO), low‐volume, customized industrial product as a project, and an upstream contract supplier supplying a key material to the project. The project faces two uncertainties: project activity time uncertainty and material consumption uncertainty, which may be positively or negatively correlated. In anticipation of these uncertainties, the project firm has to carefully decide its promised project due date to its project customer, against which harsh penalties will be assessed, and his material order quantity to commit to the contract supplier in advance. In most practical settings, project firms order from contracted suppliers via a flexible wholesale price contract consisting of a discounted advance order price and a risk‐premium adjusted expedite order price. The discounted advance order price encourages the project firm to take more inventory risk in the supply chain, and the expedite order price incentivizes the supplier to bear more inventory risk by carrying safety stock in excess of the project firm\u27s advance material order. We formulate an optimization model that solves the project firm\u27s project due date and material order problem, which takes into account the supplier\u27s strategic reaction to the project firm\u27s material order under the flexible wholesale price contract. We show that for MTO projects, risk‐sharing with suppliers on project materials is less important to the project firm, with the project firm assuming ownership of all material inventory in the channel and setting a deliberate project due date being the key. On the other hand, for ETO projects, risk‐sharing with contracted suppliers assumes critical importance. Project firms managing ETO projects should fully exploit the flexibility in the material supply contract to optimally drive the supplier\u27s safety stock level and set the project due date reflecting the shared risk in the supply chain

    The Success of Establishing Legislative Commissions to Address Complex and Critical Needs: Examining the Early Recommendations and Outcomes of the Commission on School Construction and Modernization

    The 2020 creation of the Virginia Commission on School Construction and Modernization proved to be a pivotal moment in addressing the longstanding issue of school construction and modernization in the state. With $1.25 billion in new resources allocated for school divisions in 2022, including an increased Literary Fund and a flexible formula-based grant, legislators took decisive action to support school infrastructure. The creation of the School Construction Fund and School Construction Assistance Program, with ongoing funding provided through taxes on casino revenues, marked a significant step forward in providing ongoing resources for school projects. Despite several successful legislative outcomes, some proposals—such as the 1% sales tax authorization for localities and further financial investments in 2023—faced challenges and were not enacted. Nevertheless, the 2022 session left a lasting impact on the education landscape, prompting bipartisan support for continued progress. The Commission on School Construction and Modernization played a vital role in shaping these advancements, guiding policy makers in making informed decisions and bolstering the state\u27s commitment to improving learning environments for all students. The path paved by the Commission offers hope for further investments and reforms in the future, positioning Virginia as a leader in supporting education infrastructure
