[Description of] The SAGE Encyclopedia of Leadership Studies

    No full text
Leadership Studies is a multi-disciplinary academic exploration of the various aspects of how people get along, and how together they get things done. The fields that contribute to leadership studies include history, political science, psychology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, literature, and behavioral economics. Leadership Studies is also about the ethical dimensions of human behavior. The discipline considers what leadership has been in the past (the historical view), what leadership actually looks like in the present (principally from the perspectives of the behavioral sciences and political science), and what leadership should be (the ethical perspective). The SAGE Encyclopedia of Leadership Studies will present both key concepts and research illuminating leadership and many of the most important events in human history that reveal the nuances of leadership, good and bad. Entries will include topics such as power, charisma, identity, persuasion, personality, social intelligence, gender, justice, unconscious conceptions of leadership, leader-follower relationships, and moral transformation.https://scholarship.richmond.edu/bookshelf/1407/thumbnail.jp

[Description of] Thriving in College with ADHD: A Cognitive-Behavioral Skills Manual for Therapists

    No full text
Thriving in College with ADHD uses cognitive-behavioral and psychoeducational techniques to address ADHD and related impairment in a way that is tailored to the needs of college students. This manual distills the expertise of four psychologists with extensive experience helping students with ADHD. The treatment is designed to be effective, flexible, and feasible. Modules address organization, time management, planning, and academic skills, adaptive thinking, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and other life skills. They can be used with individuals or groups and as an abbreviated or comprehensive treatment, tailored to client needs. The accompanying student workbook will increase the treatment’s impact and keep college students engaged in learning new skills. Any mental health professional working with college students with ADHD can benefit their clients by adding this approach to their toolbox.https://scholarship.richmond.edu/bookshelf/1408/thumbnail.jp

[Description of] Global Climate Change Turning Knowledge Into Action

    No full text
Earth’s climate is changing. This book investigates the scientific, environmental, social, political, and economic aspects of climate change. It enables students to reach an informed opinion and encourages active engagement in finding solutions. It begins with a strong introduction to the scientific factors that drive natural and anthropogenic climate change and expands over three chapters to explore the impact of greenhouse gases on the distribution of solar energy across land, sea, ice, and air. The author examines geologically ancient climates in order to highlight possible future scenarios, and case studies from around the world highlight the impact of climate change on the physical and human environment. The final chapters investigate how society can respond to the challenges of climate change and overcome the political, social, and economic factors that are barriers to progress, focusing on the role of energy policy, fiscal policy, and risk assessment as a means to stimulate discussion about science, society, and the role of the media. Science is the foundation of any solution, but to turn this knowledge into action requires the application of a broad set of skills that are rooted in the liberal arts experience such as critical thinking, analytical thinking, problem solving, and communication. This textbook will be an essential resource for students taking courses in environmental geography, climate change, natural hazards, climatology, and meteorology.https://scholarship.richmond.edu/bookshelf/1415/thumbnail.jp

Contribution of Local Wisdom of the Bajo Tribe to Preserve Indonesia’s Mangrove Forests

    No full text
Mangrove forests are one of the most important ecosystems for coastal communities. However, mangrove forests are degraded and damaged by human activities. One solution to overcome this problem is to take advantage of local wisdom. The Bajo Tribe, who lives around Indonesia\u27s mangrove forests, has unique local wisdom and the potential to maintain the sustainability of mangrove forests. This study explores the contribution of the local wisdom of the Bajo Tribe in preserving Indonesia\u27s mangrove forests. This article results from qualitative research in which data was collected through interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The informants of this study are the Bajo Tribe community on the coast of Tomini Bay, Indonesia. The results showed that the local wisdom of the Bajo Tribe in preserving mangrove forests includes several practices, namely mangrove forest conservation, wisely managing mangrove forests, and developing a sustainable economy based on mangrove forests. These practices have been proven to preserve mangrove forests. This research provides a better understanding of the local wisdom of the Bajo Tribe in preserving Indonesia\u27s mangrove forests. It helps the government develop better policies and practices to preserve the sustainability of Indonesia\u27s mangrove forest

The infinitely repeated volunteer\u27s dilemma: An experimental study

    No full text
We examine how repeated interaction can facilitate coordinated turn-taking in a two-player infinitely repeated Volunteer\u27s Dilemma. We conjecture that repetition creates an environment for players to coordinate on the Pareto efficient, but asymmetric pure strategy Nash equilibria of the stage game by taking turns volunteering. We consider three cost treatments: both players have the same cost; one player has a higher cost and this cost assignment is constant; one player has a higher cost and this cost assignment is random. We find that turn-taking is the dominant play when costs are symmetric. When costs are asymmetric, the low-cost player is more likely to volunteer. However, contrary to predictions, asymmetric randomly allocated costs do not perfectly coordinate turn-taking. When costs are asymmetric and constant over time, behavior is markedly heterogeneous

Algorithmic Disgorgement: Destruction of Artificial Intelligence Models as the FTC\u27s Newest Enforcement Tool for Bad Data

    Get PDF
Algorithmic disgorgement, also known as algorithmic destruction or model destruction, is the ordered deletion of computer data models or algorithms that were developed with improperly obtained data. It is a relatively new remedy that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has used several times since 2019 under its broad authority to “order relief reasonably tailored to the violation of the law.” Historically, FTC commissioners have “voted to allow data protection law violators to retain algorithms and technologies that derive much of their value from ill-gotten data,” with the remedy for violating data collection laws being only the deletion of the data itself and possible monetary fines. However, in what former FTC Commissioner Rohit Chopra called an “important course correction,” the FTC has recently begun to require algorithmic disgorgement in its settlements—that is, the deletion of not just the improperly obtained data itself, but any models and algorithms built using such data

Social Media Platforms\u27 Reckoning: The Harmful Impact of TikTok\u27s Algorithm on People of Color

    Get PDF
Social media platforms have become an integral part of our daily lives. The growing societal reliance on these social platforms calls for a greater understanding of how they impact and engage with people of color. TikTok\u27s innovative use of recommendation algorithms has disrupted the social media industry. This Article exposes the harm people of color face on TikTok using Professor Anita L. Allen\u27s Black Opticon framework. Further, it uncovers instances of discriminatory predation and exclusion on the platform and expands the framework to distinguish between discrimination platforms perpetuate actively (platform predation) and passively (private predation). Due to a lack of transparency surrounding algorithms, the full extent of the issue of discriminatory exclusion and predation on TikTok is not yet fully understood. However, the findings of possible harms presented in this Article serve as a warning to other social media platforms using recommendation algorithms
