Introduction: Etruria, Anatolia, and Wider Mediterranean Connectivity
A comprehensive examination of material connections and artistic exchange between Etruria and Anatolia has never been the focus of an in-depth and heuristic study. Remarkable connections in Etruscan and Anatolian material culture show a growing body of fascinating evidence for various forms of contact and exchange between these two regions. This book establishes a new framework for discussing such similarities, and it invites new conversations about materiality, connectivity, and exchange among two regions separated (literally) by Greece. It examines recurring threads of a rich and varied Etruscan and Anatolian fabric of material networks surfacing in a wide variety of artistic styles and narratives. The traditional ways of looking at the ancient Mediterranean, within strict disciplinary boundaries, can no longer be useful when it comes to this type of cultural, artistic, and ideological query. The time has come to decolonize the ancient Mediterranean framework regarding how peoples and cultures have long been viewed, examined, and packaged. Etruria and Anatolia Material Connections and Artistic Exchange
Striking similarities in Etruscan and Anatolian material culture reveal various forms of contact and exchange between these regions on opposite sides of the Mediterranean. This is the first comprehensive investigation of these connections, approaching both cultures as agents of artistic exchange rather than as side characters in a Greek-focused narrative. It synthesizes a wide range of material evidence from c. 800 – 300 BCE, from tomb architecture and furniture to painted vases, terracotta reliefs, and magic amulets. By identifying shared practices, common visual language, and movements of objects and artisans (from both east to west and west to east), it illuminates many varied threads of the interconnected ancient Mediterranean fabric. Rather than trying to account for the similarities with any one, overarching theory, this volume presents multiple, simultaneous modes and implications of connectivity while also recognizing the distinct local identities expressed through shared artistic and cultural traditions. Exclusive − electroproduction off the neutron in deuterium in the resonance region
New results for the exclusive and quasifree cross sections off neutrons bound in deuterium γvn(p) → pπ−(p) are presented over a wide final state hadron angle range with a kinematic coverage of the invariant mass (W ) up to 1.825 GeV and the four-momentum transfer squared (Q2) from 0.4 to 1.0 GeV2. The exclusive structure functions were extracted and their Legendre moments were obtained. Final-state-interaction contributions have been kinematically separated from the extracted quasifree cross sections off bound neutrons solely based on the analysis of the experimental data. These new results will serve as long-awaited input for phenomenological analyses to extract the Q2 evolution of previously unavailable n → N∗ electroexcitation amplitudes and to improve state-of-the-art models of neutrino scattering off nuclei by augmenting the already available results from free protons
Tuning the conductance topology in solids
The inertia of trapping and detrapping of nonequilibrium charge carriers affects the electrochemical and transport properties of both bulk and nanoscopic structures in a very peculiar way. An emerging memory response with hysteresis in the current–voltage response and its eventual multiple crossing, produced by this universally available ingredient, are signatures of this process. Here, we deliver a microscopic and analytical solution for these behaviors, understood as the modulation of the topology of the current–voltage loops. Memory emergence thus becomes a characterization tool for intrinsic features that affect the electronic transport of solids such as the nature and number of trapping sites, intrinsic symmetry constraints, and natural relaxation time scales. This method is also able to reduce the seeming complexity of frequency-dependent electrochemical impedance and cyclic voltammetry observable for a variety of systems to a combination of simple microscopic ingredients

Mercy Viva Italia, World Champions, 1982 I and You
Tomaž Šalamun (1941-2014) published more than 50 books of poetry in Slovenia. Translated into over 25 languages, his poetry received numerous awards, including the Jenko Prize, the Prešeren Prize, the European Prize for Poetry, and the Mladost Prize. In the 1990s, he served for several years as the Cultural Attaché for the Slovenian Embassy in New York, and later held visiting professorships at various universities in the U.S.
Brian Henry is the author of eleven books of poetry, most recently Permanent State (Threadsuns, 2020), and the prose book Things Are Completely Simple: Poetry and Translation (Parlor, 2022). He has translated Tomaž Šalamun’s Woods and Chalices (Harcourt, 2008), Aleš Debeljak’s Smugglers (BOA Editions, 2015), and five books by Aleš Šteger. His work has received numerous honors, including two NEA fellowships, the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award, a Howard Foundation fellowship, and the Best Translated Book Award
Gender and Forced Displacement in Cities
Conflict-induced forced displacement is at the highest level ever recorded, presenting a massive development challenge for the cities that host displaced people. In 2022 – the latest year for which data is available – there were 108.4 million forcibly displaced people in the world, 62.5 million who are internally displaced and 43.3 million children in need of education and special protection, This number has almost certainly increased in the face of new global conflicts such as Sudan. Three out of four refugees are hosted in developing countries, placing a strain on already limited infrastructure and resources. This surge in conflict-induced forced displacement iscompounded by global climate change, as cities around the world also cope with rising temperatures and increased droughts and flooding. Forced displacement and climate change compound development challenges already present in urban areas around the world, heightening the need for targeted development approaches. Addressing the specific needs of displaced women and girls in urban areas is an imperative to ensure that no one is left behind
Understanding Peanuts and Schulzian Symmetry: Panel Detection, Caption Detection, and Gag Panels in 17,897 Comic Strips Through Distant Viewing
In this article, we applied distant viewing to a corpus of 17,897 comic strips from Charles Schulz’s Peanuts as a primary case study. Distant viewing uses computational techniques to study large-scale visual media, and draws upon interdisciplinary areas including visual media studies, cultural studies, data science, and semiotics. We focus on comic strips, particularly Peanuts, due to their widespread readership, historical and cultural cache, and complexity as a medium built on the interplay between text, image, and meaning. First, we discuss previous work done at the intersections of comics studies and computer vision. Next, we establish the processes for applying computer vision to comic strips. After that, we provide several examples, including: panel detection (variations in panel length over a cartoonist’s career); caption detection (identification and location of captions in panels); and comics paratext (computer vision analyses/exclusions of copyright text, signatures, dates, etc.). Combined studies of panel detection, caption detection, and comics paratext reveals new insights into the success, longevity, and influence of one of the world’s most famous newspaper comic strips. Ultimately, computer vision reveals a subtle stability and symmetry to Schulz’s artistry that played an understudied but significant role in the comic strip’s popularity
Critical edition of The triumphs of re-united Britannia (author, Anthony Munday) with Mapping Early Modern London
Shakespeare and his contemporaries traversed London on foot. Early modern plays, pamphlets, histories, and poems assume intimate knowledge of the streets, alleys, and topography of the city. At Map of Early Modern London (MoEML), our ongoing project is to map the spatial imaginary of Shakespeare’s city; we ask how London’s spaces and places were named, traversed, used, repurposed, and contested by various practitioners (Michel de Certeau’s term), writers, and civic officials. MoEML’s maps allow us to plot people, historical documents, literary works, and recent critical research onto topography and the built environment. At the same time, we experiment with new digital modes of answering GeoHumanities questions. An early contributor to the spatial turn and literary geographic information systems (GIS), MoEML provides a virtual space for exploring the meaning and representation of cultural space in the London of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. We also experiment with new ways of working collaboratively as teams and across institutions and disciplines
