Shaping Heroism Through Participatory Fan Cultures: An Analysis of Video Game Heroes as Nonhuman Online Personas
Get PDFThis paper expands the theoretical framework for analysing nonhuman personas developed by Connell and Moore (2023) to explore video game hero personas as assemblages - complex negotiations between social media platforms, video game developers, and participatory fan cultures. Through a critical analysis of Aloy from the Horizon (2017-2023) series, I argue that video game heroes are dynamic characters, and fan participation in the shaping of a video game hero’s online persona is often overlooked. By examining the collaborative relationships between video game heroes and their online participatory fan communities, the article contributes to ongoing conversations about processes of heroic representation in popular culture
Everyday Heroism and the Journey of the Community in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Get PDFThis article examines the impact of everyday heroism on community in the science fiction novel The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (2014) by Becky Chambers. While science fiction often features superhuman action or scientist heroes and technocratic dystopian futures, Chambers’s novel represents the recent trend of hopepunk, which sets stories within mundane social interactions to imagine gradual positive change. Instead of its action-adventure potential, the narrative in Chambers’s novel focuses on the relationships between a multi-species crew of a spaceship, creating a heightened sense of the crew as a found family where individuals come to accept and support each other – and in this way, the story centers around the journey of the community towards equality, inclusion, and hope. I argue that the everyday heroism in the novel is transparent but highly prosocial, overall resulting in a representation of everyday heroism as a way to imagine more hopeful futures

In this paper, we fix a unitary operator U and describe all of the conjugations C which satisfy this property. As a consequence of our results, we show that a subspace is hyperinvariant for U if and only if it is invariant for any conjugation C for which CUC = U*

Parfitian or Buddhist Reductionism? Revisiting a Debate about Personal Identity.
No full textDerek Parfit influentially defends reductionism about persons, the view that a person’s existence just consists in the existence of a brain and body and the occurrence of a series of physical and mental events. Yet some critics, particularly Mark Johnston, have raised powerful objections to Parfit’s reductionism. In this paper, I defend reductionism against Johnston. In particular, I defend a radical form of reductionism that Buddhist philosophers developed. Buddhist reductionism can justify key features of Parfit’s position, such as the claims that personal identity is not what matters and can also be indeterminate. Furthermore, Buddhist reductionism can avoid Johnston’s objections to Parfit’s reductionism. I conclude that reductionists have good reasons to favor Buddhist reductionism over Parfit’s version
