    COVID-19 and Campus Life: Student Perspectives

    The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented changes to campus life as students have adjusted to the hybrid class model and physical distancing framework. Simply residing on campus this semester has been a privilege; many Spiders, especially international students and students with pre-existing health conditions, could not come at all. Among students on campus, there are varying attitudes about how this semester of “Protecting Our Web” has gone.     In January 2020, Virginia ratified the Equal Rights Amendment, fulfilling the constitutional ratification requirements and thus enshrining it as the Twenty-Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This article seeks to highlight and explore the lives and contributions of some of the Virginia women who paved the way for this monumental achievement and shaped our nation and our Commonwealth. From Pocahontas to Barbara Johns and the women of the Virginia Military Institute, the history of Virginia women has been one of grit and determination even in the face of subjugation and exploitation. This article seeks to amplify their voices and their stories for the debt of gratitude we owe these women – and all Virginia women – who have fought to advance the ideals of equality

    The School Mathematics Study Group: Lessons in Mathematics Education

    This work argues that the new math project called the School Mathematics Study Group offers a valuable case study for mathematics educators seeking to venture into the future better informed about both the successes and failures of previous projects. Understanding this project requires recognizing that the School Mathematics Study Group was wholly a product of the forces—personal, educational, mathematical, and political—that shaped it. Admittedly, some of the SMSG\u27s shortcomings resulted from its members\u27 lack of understanding of the changes needed in mathematics education. Still, the majority of the SMSG\u27s public vilification resulted through no fault of its own, but rather from shifts and unrest in the very forces that shaped the organization. With the benefit of nearly half a century of hindsight, this project aims to draw from the work of the School Mathematics Study Group with an eye towards identifying meaningful lessons for mathematics educators today

    Social Media Advertising: How Online Motivations and Congruency Influence Perceptions of Trust

    Drawing from uses and gratifications theory, the current research demonstrates that users\u27 trust in social media advertising is differentially influenced by the users\u27 online motivation. We focus on three specific motivation types that previous research has shown are particularly relevant to internet use: (1) information motivation, using the internet to learn about current events and to do research; (2) social-interaction motivation, using the internet to socialize with friends, family, and other individuals; and (3) entertainment motivation, using the internet to pass time and engage in enjoyable activities. Using one survey and two experiments, we show that when users have an informational motivation, trust in social media advertising is lower than when they have an entertainment or social motivation. Congruency between the content of the social media advertisement and the online motivation can mitigate the negative effect on trust associated with an informational motive, while incongruency increases involvement and privacy concerns along with distrust. These findings provide helpful guidance to managers as they implement social media advertising campaigns

    Better Than a Discharge

    “It’s the Cadillac of . . .” Chilli Palmer. Traditionally, discharge has been regarded as the “Cadillac” of success in bankruptcy. Getting a discharge is as good as it can get. When an individual debtor files for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 and receives a discharge then, in the language of the South, the attorney for that individual has “done good.” Or, in more academic verbiage, the lawyer has achieved Chapter 7 and Chapter 13’s “end goal.” Similarly, if a business entity files for Chapter 11 and its plan is confirmed which triggers a discharge, the attorney for the business has “done good.” As Professor LoPucki more eloquently put it, “provisions of Chapter 11 treat confirmation as a systems goal.” But now when a business entity files for Chapter 11 to sell its business under § 363 of the Bankruptcy Code, then increasingly the attorney for the buyer has done better than good. The order that the buyer gets from buying the assets of a debtor’s business in bankruptcy can be better than the discharge a debtor gets from having its Chapter plan confirmed. This article will show the ways that, under various decisions of bankruptcy courts, district courts, and circuit courts, a § 363 sale order provides greater relief for a buyer of a business in bankruptcy than a discharge order can provide for any debtor who files for bankruptcy relief. And, we will examine the statutory and policy bases for these decisions. [..

    Sintering-Based In-Situ Synthesis and Characterization by TEM of Noble Metal Nanoparticles for Ceramic Glaze Color Control.

    Gold and silver salt mixtures are incorporated in ceramic glazes for in situ development of mixtures of gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) that subsequently allow for a wide spectrum of low metal loading color control within ceramic materials. Prior work has shown that gold NPs can be used to create vibrant, color-rich red pigments in high-temperature ceramic and glass applications, though the achievable diameter of the gold NP ultimately limits the available range of color. The current study significantly expands color control from traditional gold nanoparticle red through silver nanoparticle green via the alteration of gold-to-silver salt ratios incorporated in the glaze formulations prior to sintering. Nanoparticle-based coloring systems are tested in both oxidative and reductive firing atmospheres. While the oxidation environment is found to be prohibitive for silver NP stability, the reductive atmosphere is able to form and sustain mixtures of gold and silver NPs across a wide color spectrum. All glazes are analyzed via reflectance spectrometry for color performance and samples are characterized via TEM and EDS for composition and sizing trends. This study creates new groundwork for a color-controlled NP system based on noble metal ratio blends that are both nontoxic and achieved with radically lower metal pigment loading than traditional glazes

    Hacımusalar Höyük in the Early Bronze Age.

    Excavations at Hacımusalar Höyük in southwestern Turkey have uncovered thousands of years of occupation history, from the Early Bronze Age through the Late Byzantine era. This article offers a general survey of the Bronze Age occupation levels so far explored on the northern and western slopes of the mound, with particular focus on two well-preserved Early Bronze II destruction levels, closely superimposed. We present selected finds and architectural features from each stratigraphic level in sequence and discuss their significance for current theories of cultural interaction and social organization in West Anatolia in the Early Bronze Age. This new evidence indicates that Hacımusalar Höyük and the Elmalı plain were more connected with other parts of Anatolia than recent studies of Early Bronze Age cultural zones suggest but still maintained a distinctive regional character

    Embodying Equity: Change Management Strategies for Addressing Racial Equity in Environmental Nonprofits

    Recent social movements and the urgency of the climate crisis have heightened awareness of the exclusion of people of color within the environmental movement. While many environmental nonprofits are working to address racial equity within their organizations, they are often not well-equipped with the tools, tactics, and change management strategies to successfully execute their goals. Using data from case studies via qualitative interviews with local Richmond, VA environmental nonprofit leaders, this study aims to combine insights from nonprofit leaders doing racial equity work with key theories of change from the ProSci ADKAR model, John Kotter’s 8-Step Process for Leading Change, and Adrienne Maree brown’s Emergent Strategy. The study also incorporates relevant literature and survey data about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work and the current state of diversity in the environmental sector. Conclusions explore possible approaches to racial equity work, a hybrid model of change theory for racial equity, and an analysis of common challenges and roadblocks for nonprofit leaders

    Beam Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Electroproduction of Hadron Pairs.

    A first measurement of the longitudinal beam spin asymmetry ALU in the semi-inclusive electroproduction of pairs of charged pions is reported. ALU is a higher-twist observable and offers the cleanest access to the nucleon twist-3 parton distribution function e(x). Data have been collected in the Hall-B at Jefferson Lab by impinging a 5.498-GeV electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target, and reconstructing the scattered electron and the pion pair with the CLAS detector. One-dimensional projections of the AsinϕRLU moments are extracted for the kinematic variables of interest in the valence quark region. The understanding of dihadron production is essential for the interpretation of observables in single-hadron production in semi-inclusive DIS, and pioneering measurements of single-spin asymmetries in dihadron production open a new avenue in studies of QCD dynamics

    The Place of Philosophy in Bioethics Today

    In some views, philosophy\u27s glory days in bioethics are over. While philosophers were especially important in the early days of the field, so the argument goes, the majority of the work in bioethics today involves the simple application of existing philosophical principles or concepts, as well as empirical work in bioethics. Here, we address this view head on and ask: What is the role of philosophy in bioethics today? This paper has three specific aims: (1) to respond to skeptics and make the case that philosophy and philosophers still have a very important and meaningful role to play in contemporary bioethics, (2) to discuss some of the current challenges to the meaningful integration of philosophy and bioethics, and (3) to make suggestions for what needs to happen in order for the two fields to stay richly connected. We outline how bioethics center directors, funders, and philosopher bioethicists can help
