AI and Art: An Increasingly Inextricable Affair
Siri, Waze, Google Translate, Instagram -- we experience Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) every day of our lives when we use apps that are trained for a specific task, such as when Spotify recommends new songs based on the music you already like. These apps compute the data users give (whether knowingly or not) and adjust their own algorithms to provide the best possible experience. This is an application of Artificial Intelligence called machine learning. While some see it as a subset of AI, many argue that the ability to learn and improve through experience is critical to the very definition of intelligence
Decriminalization in Virginia: Marijuana in the 2020 General Assembly Session
Cannabis is regulated in over one-third of the United States and it has finally made its way to Virginia. While it is not yet legal in the Commonwealth, it has been decriminalized. This is when the criminal penalties are removed but civil penalties (often fines) remain. This is a step in the right direction but activists know that this is not enough for the communities that continue to be harmed by a failed war on drugs. The legislation in Virginia will not fix the issue of over-policing in Black and Brown communities but activists believe that it will put Virginia in a position to repair past harms. The legislation itself imposes a $25 fine each time a person is caught with one ounce or less of marijuana. There are no escalating penalties. Activist groups were divided on the legislation’s ability to actually fix any harms within the communities most harmed by prohibition. The bills failed to address the issue of decriminalizing paraphernalia or third-party background checks in record sealing. However, it also includes provisions for a work group to study the possible legalization of adult-use in 2021. Many activists believe that this legislation is a steppingstone that will be used to help Virginia ease into the world of legalized marijuana. While there is a long way to go, Virginia is taking its first steps towards modernity and taking the first steps towards fixing its past

Inspired by Jenner’s methodology of using the cowpox virus to protect against smallpox in humans, vaccine innovations and their significance to public health took off after Louis Pasteur’s discovery of the rabies vaccine in 1885. Racial Disparities in College Students’ Scholastic Adjustment Amidst COVID-19: The Protective Function of Campus Resources and Supports
Scientific investigations are needed to understand the extent to which COVID-19 has affected, and exacerbated racial disparities in, college students’ scholastic adjustment. We propose a study based on two waves of data collected as part of a large-scale, longitudinal study on college students’ well-being amidst COVID-19. More specifically, we will evaluate a model of risk and protective factors for college students’ scholastic adjustment across three time points within the 2020-21 academic year.
The first aim is to evaluate contextual risk factors for college students’ scholastic difficulties during COVID-19 and whether contextual risk is more pronounced for minoritized students. The second aim is to examine whether campus supports and resources buffer risk for scholastic difficulties for all students, and especially minoritized students, during COVID-19. College students (N=522) from two, residential liberal arts colleges participated in the first wave of data in the fall and will be invited to participate in two waves of data collection in the spring.
