Mindfulness and stress reduction strategies with undergraduate and graduate nursing students
This chapter will explore the factors related to perceived stress and related health outcomes for nursing students. We will explore mindfulness and stress reduction strategies on perceived stress experienced by undergraduate and graduate nursing students at a small, private university in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Nursing students face higher and different levels of stress with adverse health outcomes compared to other students. Literature has linked perceived stress to reduced physical/psychological health, increased sickness/absence, increased staff turnover, and poor job and academic performance. Nursing educators must provide coping strategies to nursing students at all levels, to enable them to attain a unique skill set to build resiliency and reduce perceived stress while managing physical and mental stressors of challenging nursing curricula
Tracking Trk-B: A Follow-Up Parkinson\u27s Disease Study Proposal
In this presentation, we provide insight into our summer internship experience working with Parkinson\u27s Disease (PD) researchers at the VA Portland Healthcare System. The presentation covers key background information on the disease and research techniques, and discusses a study conducted by Dr. Charles Meshul that tested and assessed an agonist of the Trk-B receptor as a prospective drug treatment for PD. Our talk culminates with a follow-up proposal to this study that aims to further investigate the role of the Trk-B receptor in PD pathology.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/ase_internships/1006/thumbnail.jp
Connect Four
The Connect Four team designed a digital hardware implementation of the classic game Connect Four. The game is accessible, so children of varying mobility levels all have access to the game.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1071/thumbnail.jp
SAE Aero Design
This project is part of the SAE Aero Design competition that challenges participating teams to create, design, fabricate, and test a radio-controlled aircraft that can operate from short runways, while carrying outsized spherical cargo as well as regular boxed cargo. The team designed and built an aircraft that meets the designated mission requirements and maximizes the competition scoring parameters.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1087/thumbnail.jp
Code Cognition: How the Brain Interprets Code
This presentation discusses how data scientists interpret code based on patterns found within data science notebooks. While dissecting 44 notebooks and marking each individual function down, research was able to be done regarding what the intention of these codes was and how they were used. Such research may kickstart the development of program comprehension tools, similar to those in normal coding, in data scientist notebooks.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/ase_internships/1003/thumbnail.jp
When I Try to Tell My Teenagers a Story
Medium: Sterling external combustion engine, alcohol burners, DC generator, resistance meter, DC electrical motor.
Dimensions: 18 x 15 x 12
The COVID-19 pandemic altered the world and took many lives. By contrast, our family was only inconvenienced. We followed the recommended protocols and worked and schooled from home.
In the initial weeks of March and April of 2020, we embraced our time together and shared stories.
But, without the ability to leave the house to generate new stories, all we had were the old ones....and old stories go sour.
This machine illustrates how my teenagers respond to my tales.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/pitzer_exhibit-2/1006/thumbnail.jp
Peer Mentoring to Enhance Parent Coping with Child\u27s New Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosis
Pediatric kidney disease diagnoses are stressful for the entire family and many parents lack social outlets that understand the associated lifestyle changes and stressors. There is a variety of evidence in the literature supporting the use of peer mentoring to promote positive coping among patients with chronic disease and their family members. This paper describes the development and implementation of a peer mentoring program among parents of children newly diagnosed with kidney disease to determine the impact on parent coping with their child’s diagnosis, as assessed through the Coping Health Inventory for Parents (CHIP-16). Results are discussed, as well as lessons learned and recommendations that may guide future peer mentoring programs among this population
