Strategies for Strengthening Ethics Education in a DNP Program
Get PDFNurse practitioners frequently encounter ethical dilemmas, and their identification is essential to effective resolution. An innovative approach involving collaboration between doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) faculty was used to address this need in a graduate nursing program. The results included a broader understanding of the synergy of the two educational backgrounds in translating and delivering evidence-based practices. The development and use of realistic case studies was a teaching strategy for ethics education. The unique backgrounds of each faculty member promote ethical practice among DNP students, which is essential to the profession
Balancing Social Responsibility and Employee Experience in B-Corporations
Get PDFThe research conducted is based on the tensions created within a B-Corporation organization that also needs to keep in mind their social and environmental responsibility when making decisions about stakeholders. The question that guided my research was how does employee experience become affected by the pressure of many stakeholders within a B-Corp organization and how does this impact communication at the company. The data was analyzed from qualitative interviews with four employees, field notes of various environments, and artifacts found throughout the space. The disconnect between the perceptions and reality experienced by subjects in various roles within the organization showed that a lack of structure to properly hear and voice opinions resulted in more tensions between stakeholders. Pursuing a conflict model that acknowledges an employee focused communication system is needed in order for employees to speak up in a meaningful and inclusive manner is imperative to balancing multiple stakeholders in a way that is beneficial to all involved
Connecting parasite-infected crab data to shorebird mortality during El Ni˜no seasons
Get PDFPacific mole crabs (Emerita analoga) are one of the most important and abundant invertebrates in sandy beach environments. Consequently, they are a common food source for shorebirds and sea otters.Since the mole crab serves as the primary intermediate host for acanthocephalans parasites, they have been linked to a number of mortality events. Studies suggest that parasite development and transmission may be strongly effected by weather patterns. LiMPETs, a citizen science program, has collected data on the prevalence of infected crab along the California Coast. By segregating this data into El Nino/La Nina seasons, we use a differential equation model help to answer questions concerning weather effects on shorebird mortality
Redefining Professional Development: Investigating the Professional Learning Experiences of Catholic School Educators
Get PDFThe purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate the professional learning experiences of Catholic school educators and compare these experiences to national learning standards. This study aimed to better understand how professional learning could be meaningful and relevant for educators. Participants in this research included 223 educators from four Catholic high schools who took the 50-item Standards Assessment Inventory (SAI) survey (Learning Forward, 2011), which was grouped into seven Professional Learning Standards: learning communities, leadership, resources, data, learning designs, implementation, and outcomes. Additionally, nine educators participated in focus group interviews at three of the participating schools. The majority of teachers (79%) were White, 53% were Female, and 82% had at least a Master’s Degree.
An extensive literature review on teacher professional development revealed reform efforts to redefine professional development within the context of adult learning. Despite years of research on effective professional learning characteristics, teachers report little value in professional learning experiences and overall low job satisfaction. Furthermore, professional learning research specific to Catholic education is scarce. This study utilized adult learning theory and national standards of professional learning to explore the efficacy of teacher learning in Catholic high schools. Participants rated the SAI survey items on a frequency scale from Never (1) to Always (5). An ANOVA with repeated measures revealed that the Leadership standard (M = 3.71; SD = .63) was statistically significantly higher (p \u3c .05) than all other standards. The Data standard was statistically significantly lower (p \u3c .05) than all other standards (M = 2.88; SD = .78). Qualitative feedback revealed several key characteristics of effective professional learning at Catholic schools that reflect findings in prior research, including: collaborative, reflective, relevant, content-focused, and self-directed. Data analysis also revealed barriers to effective learning.
This research can serve as a model for school leaders to measure the efficacy of professional learning in any educational context. The findings call for further research on data usage and integrating an equity lens into professional learning. Finally, this research highlights the need to use research-based best practices to plan and implement effective professional learning experiences for educators

AVID Elementary: A Case Study of Program Effectiveness
Get PDFAVID is a college-readiness program that supports students in the academic middle to be successful in rigorous academic coursework needed to be prepared for college. At the elementary level, school-wide instructional strategies, organizational tools, and college-going school culture support students’ socio-emotional and academic development. Focused on building students’ growth mindset, mastery goal orientation, and academic self-efficacy, AVID aims to prepare students for the next level. The purpose of this study is two-fold: to evaluate the impacts of the AVID program at the elementary school level on students’ growth mindset, self-efficacy, and goal orientation and to determine principals’ and teachers’ perceptions on the initial implementation of AVID Elementary. The study included elementary students (N=316) who were enrolled in three treatment schools that implemented AVID Elementary with students for the first time and two comparison schools in the same school district. Students were given a pre-survey at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year and post-survey at the end of the fall academic term to measure growth mindset, goal orientation, and academic self-efficacy. Principal, teacher, and student interviews were conducted to determine individual perceptions on the AVID program.
The outcomes of this study demonstrated that the organizational tools and instructional strategies used by teachers as part of the AVID Elementary program positively impacted students’ self-perceptions of academic self-efficacy. Students interviewed displayed mastery goal oriented thinking and growth mindsets when discussing difficult coursework. Teachers saw students develop greater independence in their learning and improved academic outcomes as a result of students increased academic self-efficacy. No statistically significant effects were found on growth mindset, academic-efficacy, and goal orientation between treatment and comparison schools. However, differential interaction effects were found between White and non- White students and between fifth and sixth grade students on growth mindset and between special education and non-special education students on performance-avoidance goal orientation
