    One Person Can\u27t Do It All! The Communicative Enactment of Organizational Culture, Collective Identity and Multilayered Leadership

    This qualitative case study featured an interpretive approach to understanding the culture of a fire station utilizing participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The goal of this study is to investigate the layer(s) of Complexity Leadership that are enacted and valued by organizational members to create an adaptive and collaborative work environment. It also aims to understand the role of organizational culture (Pacanowsky & O’Donnell-Trujillo, 1982) in creating the collective identity of the fire station. In addition, the study navigates the tension between this collective identity, individual specialization and fixed place in the hierarchy when dealing with unpredictability. The results suggest that firefighters construct their culture through the negotiation of three main elements, which are organizational structure, social structure and episodic unpredictability. The interactive sense making of these elements lays the ground for the collective identity through constructing a shared cognitive understanding of organizational reality, active relationships and emotional investment (Melucci, 1995). This helps firefighters navigate uncertainty and unpredictability at a micro level by self-organization and formulation around specialization. In addition, the findings indicate that firefighters create an adaptive outcome at a macro level through the utilization of Administrative leadership (Uhl-Bien, Marion, & McKelvey, 2007) that enforces order yet practices Enabling Leadership to empower leaders. This empowerment allows the balance between order and presented social and professional chaos to maintain the level of complexity needed to deal with complex and unpredictable problems

    The world is changing. College graduates have to go up against and face newer and stronger challenges that they may not be 100% prepared for. The goal of this study is to provide a way to successfully understand the environments college students are heading into and how to be able to appropriately and effectively navigate through them. In order to achieve this, this study will examine theories centered on an individual’s ability to appropriate into a culture or community without creating conflicting views or overall conflict. A tool kit provided at the end of this study will allow individuals recently graduating from college to understand their own lack of knowledge in social issues that if not addressed can cause their inability to successfully participant in a work environment

    A bird’s eye view of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge occupation: Nonhuman agency and entangled species

    In January 2016, armed militants occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, demanding an end to government control of the Refuge and other similarly protected public lands. Public discourse about the occupation highlights ongoing tensions around land use, property rights, and government overreach. The discourse foregrounds human animal concerns and all but erases nonhuman animal agency. This essay considers nonhuman animal agency and the entanglement of humans, nonhumans, and the land as seen in the occupation and surrounding discourse. We draw from critical animal studies and feminist posthuman theory to examine how discourses of the occupation produce and reinforce a sense of human exceptionalism that elides a more useful and nuanced understanding of human–nonhuman–land relatedness and agency. The analysis shows how, in the case of the Malheur occupation, occupiers and critics alike rely on discourses of “othering” towards both nonhuman animals and other humans. We take a “birding” perspective on the occupation to show how the webs of relationality that connect humans, nonhumans, and the land might be activated as an antidote to destructive discourses of human exceptionalism

    Quantifying relationships between rock hardness, shore platform topography, and intertidal biota: Oregon Coast

    To test the link between rock hardness and meter-scale shore platform morphology and the link between rock hardness and biodiversity, we examined six locations on the Oregon Coast, USA with varying rock types. At each site, we collected rock hardness data along a transect using a Schmidt hammer. To quantify topography, we processed hand-held photographs of each site using structure-from-motion photogrammetry in Agisoft PhotoScan, calculating surface roughness and related statistics in CloudCompare. Our preliminary results confirm that sites with softer rocks tend to have smoother shore platforms and higher levels of biodiversity

    The Role of Mycelium in Bioretention Systems: Evaluation of Nutrient Retention in Mycorrhizae-inoculated Mescocosms

    Bioretention systems have become an increasingly common method for treating stormwater in urban areas, which help reduce peak flows and remove contaminants from stormwater. However, nutrients often leach out of the bioretention soil mix, which can contribute to the degradation of receiving waters in bioretention systems with underdrains. Development of mycelium may improve retention of nutrients and increase the water-holding capacity. To evaluate the impact of mycelium on nutrient leaching from bioretention systems, ectomycorrhizal and endomycorrhizal fungi were added to the bioretention soil mix to promote mycelium growth. A proprietary mix with bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi also was tested. Mesocosms were planted with Carex stipata, a native sedge with endomycorrhizal associations. Four tests were conducted with collected stormwater. Lower rates of phosphorus export were observed in mescocosms with mycorrhizal fungi; the export of total phosphorus was reduced by 13–48%, and the export of phosphate was reduced by 14–60%. There also was evidence of additional copper and nitrate uptake in mesocosms with mycorrhizal fungi. Retention of total phosphorus and phosphate, rather than export, was observed in mesocosms with the proprietary mix, but export rates of nitrate were high. This study indicates that mycelium may help reduce phosphorus export from bioretention systems
